I find it disturbing he shot another buck that same year. I guess they figured he deserved it?

If they stopped all Buck hunting.
NFA-ADK replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
I have seen the bucks when they are love crazy but I just seem to find more young bucks that I do not target. Rarely do I ever see a 3.5 or older wandering for doe during the rut. (They never seem to be where I am hunting.) For me any buck I take is a trophy and I will mount every one to tell the story of the hunt. Is it about bragging rights or to claim how well I hunt, maybe. Personally it is all about self discovery and enjoyment of the outdoor adventure I go on. Every time I look at one of my mounts it brings back the memories of the hunt and why each one is special. To each his own I say. Some claim it is all about the meat but I would venture to say that most of them would shoot the 12 point buck vs any of the 4 doe with him. PS: Even thought I mount my trophies I will never enter my big bucks into P&Y or B&C. I would have mounted the spike I missed this year as I was using my best friend and long time hunting partners gun, RIP Chis, we miss you! Each deer for me is special in some way and the mount allows me to tell the tail of the great whitetail and the adventure he takes me on. Right or wrong it is what it is, you be the judge but I will not change. -

If they stopped all Buck hunting.
NFA-ADK replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
I can't say I would stop hunting, I enjoy the outdoors too much and have discovered I enjoy hunting anything that's a challenge, doe included. I know everyone says the doe are just as hard as bucks and to a point I agree. Simply put nothing gets me as excited when I find a monster buck track in deep woods or for that matter any 2.5 or older as they seem to be the norm in deep woods. Over the years I would say I have had shots on many doe that I could have taken but for bucks the opportunity is much less hence the reason I target them as they seem to be in area's less traveled by man. EX: In the ADK hunting over the years I have had maybe 50 doe I could have shot with 10-15 being adults. Bucks I have had about 8 chances, all except one were 2.5 or older. Southern zone and LI I would say I have had more than 100 doe shots I could have taken vs less than 5 buck shots. Adult doe usually have a following (Offspring), travel less with smaller home ranges making them easy to find and target. For me and my experience doe are easy targets vs bucks. This is just MY perspective. -

Sampotter, buddy, pal I always liked your post buddy! Ok now that we are great friends, let me know when I can come hunt with you, lol. OK on a serious note, do you have any idea on the age of these deer. The one early on the video looks fairly young but what a rack wow! The problem I have with camera's is if I find something like these deer on them I would probably never leave the woods, lol. WoW some real beauties Sam, good luck with them next year!

Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.
NFA-ADK replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
Even as a self admitted trophy hunter I think these are bad ideas. 1) Any additional regulation will not improve hunter relations and could drive some out. 2) It seems this is being done to have more big bucks, happy hunters resulting in more out of state purchases because we are shooting 200 BC. Will more big bucks be shot, probably, will 200 inch BC deer be abundant NO. Will this ever result in MORE purchases because now NY is a big buck state, I doubt it. 3) A few year ago I would not have cared about any of these regulation because basically they would not affect me. But just like many have stated I feel my brothers and sisters should be able to make their own choice on what they want to shoot and not have to worry about the deer they shot being legal. 4) I only see these regulations resulting in more deer left in the wood out of fear of prosecution due to an error in judging antler size. Funny how some say if we do nothing it will brake? I though the deer population and size where in good shape even if not exactly balanced. Let other states keep their restrictions and keep our state in balance. Our deer regulations are not broken, don't fix it!!! My 2 cents. -

So much for it being about population control. Sound to me like the DEC is catering to trophy hunting vs deer management. For me its not about being greedy and wanting 2 bucks it is about paying for a lifetime license that said I had 2 separate tags. One paid for to hunt with a bow and a separate one I paid to hunt with a rifle. -

I would be against the one buck rule. If I shoot a 8 on LI with the bow that would mean no hunting with rifle in the ADK? Makes no sense. I purchased a bow tag to be able to shoot one with my bow, rifle tag for another. Even though I trophy hunt I am against AR, let us shoot what we want. AR's do not improve the deer herd they only help yearling mortality. -

That is in part two of the story. He forgot to mention he left his bow at home and had to get this deer with a knife, and it dragged him 2 miles before he got the job done. And he said no way it would take more than a mile to get it done! Congrats!!!

Some people where just brought up wrong and have no class. Time and a place for everything. As keyboard warriors we sometimes forget the simple things and let our opinions flow. Simple to forget manors and respect on the internet. -

Prayers to the family. -
I hunt on LI but I hunt some hard public land. It can be as frustrating as hunting up in the ADK with very few deer unless you go to the right spots. If you want some help getting a deer let me know, I can set you up in some spots where they are much more populated than in other areas. Scouting as others have mentioned will ensure better success if you have the time.
