1)Because we can't fly 2)If we where built backwards it would smell all the time and we would want to run! 3)Because they go good with French fries.

Yes I am getting sick and tired of coming to this site to read about HUNTING and see only political issues. The board seems to be always dominated by a few political posters. Can we put political posts on a separate board. If I want to read politics and opinions I will go to facebook. Otherwise this is turning into a political site where hunting is secondary. I see enough political junk pushed on yahoo, I really do not need more here. The posts I would like to read go by so quickly that I never even get to see them because we have to talk about politics. I would like to see one line on the bottom of the board for political posts, this way IF I want to read them I can go and see what is posted. This would keep the site on the topic of hunting as oppose to letting a few political posters dominate the site. Help!!!

9 Guess I am getting old or can't remember anything or both.

The segregation I was talking about is when some doe get pushed out of their home range, usually by mom. I have seen some doe in very distant areas from where they are usually. And in these same area's I rarely see bucks. New construction can impact this issue as well. I just though this could be another contributing factor to doe not getting impregnated the first cycle or second or third. Same issue happens in remote forest where the deer are few and far. Sometimes the buck does not find the doe during the first rut due to them being occupied with other doe. JMO on possible causes of doe being bred late. This is on top of imbalanced doe/buck ratio's, and mild winters in general on LI vs upstate. Similar to Penn study posted before on post 76. Most storms we get do not cover the ground for many weeks like this year. Does it happen sure but its not the norm. OMG
-
We had snow but it was not on the ground as long as this year for sure. We had much of it melt, then another storm would come in. Yes I have been on the Island my entire life. I saw a fawn with spots in Moose River Plains in November. Believe it or not, I was shocked as anyone and probably would not believe if I did not see it myself...
-
On LI we typically have mild winters with little snow cover on the ground for more than 2 weeks. A late breeding fawn who produces another fawn the next year will possibly be breed later than the normal rut, possibly into February or later. Then next years fawn from that fawn will do the same if she is able to breed continuing the cycle until a winter like this one fixes the natural cycle. The other issue I see is some doe become detached from other doe groups including bucks making them harder to find for the bucks resulting in late breeding. On top of that our doe to buck ratio is probably to high on the doe side but bow hunters are trying to fix that by taking more. What do you think?
-
I believe the segregation of some doe groups and relatively mild winters have thrown the breading off at times. Causing some doe to become pregnant later than usual, including fawns.

So sorry. Respect, friendship and loyalty this is why we love them so much. They pretty much define those words and show us what a real best friend is.

Most responsible hunters have ethics that include identifying prey. Any reasonable hunter with some experience can be expected to tell the difference between a horse and any other animal. Experienced hunters have no issue differentiating between any game they can see. This is a rare incident with two idiots. I would suspect the two individuals where shooting off rounds with out a care and saw something and shot it figuring they would have little or no responsibility except to remove the body. Hard to do with a horse! Even harder is two, surprised they did not put the other one out of its misery. Don't let the shortcomings of a few idiots prevent you from having friends hunt the land. Just make sure they are responsible, ethical and make them aware of your concerns.

Any theories as to why? I would figure isolation and or low buck population.

Boat is frozen in snow for another 2 months.

Great another link I have to unsubscribe to. Simply put just like when the assault weapon ban came out and EVERYONE purchases one and now EVERYONE has an illegal gun. Now they will all have illegal machetes. Wonder how many will turn in the machete they purchases, lol. Just like all the people who turned in the illegal guns, but wait we don't have any stats on that because so few did. I feel so much safer now that everyone has an assault weapon in the house and now will have a machete. Glad I am not a door to door salesmen! OK back to your internet arguments, proceed now that I don't have to listen.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

That is a great one! -
I would give the deer a brake for a while. They are struggling. The snow is still pretty deep and the food is minimal. Plenty of time to scout out for next season. They have been chased for 4 months on LI, starting in February is pushing it a bit don't you think? I would not mind scouting but after winters grip brakes and the deer are less stressed out. Patterning a winter deer yard or sheltered area might push them out resulting in more stress to an already stressed out animal in these conditions. If you go the other advantage for the deer would be you blazing new trails through the snow. Good luck what ever you choose.

GETSOME! Resistance is futile, assimilation is inevitable.

Today was a nice day, to bad my oil burner stopped working! No hot shower today, arg. Kind of glad it happened because their was a pin hole in one of the pipes that needed attention. I found out what a sharkbite is in the process. Cool tool for repairs and was much quicker than adding fittings and flaring pipes. Repair tech cost 200$ with parts in less than an hour and I went back to work happy to have heat again but hungry from no lunch or lunch money. Shower time!

Welcome aboard! Great site with great people, enjoy!

Over the hills and through the woods, Lane chased big bucks like only he could. He would chase them high and chase them low not many escaped his final blow. He taught us to be proud and feel no shame for hunting whitetail deer was the name of the game. We will miss you Lane that is for sure but we will pass on your hunting lore. We will try to emulate your hunting skills, tracking big bucks over the hills but as much as we try to be like you no one compared to the whitetail guru. RIP
