I shoot at Suffolk Archers. The old timers look at me with distain because I shoot a compound. They ask when I will give up my training wheels. I reply with "I want my arrow to go into the target and pass through not bounce off like I see you do against 3D..." Not to many friend made this way but... To say that crossbows are frowned upon would be an understatement of the year IMO... And I agree 100% about the cross bow advantage over both... I can teach a 14 year old to shoot one effectively in one day. Not so with a traditional or compound, plain and simple they take much more practice to perfect and be effective.

I agree 100% Fade! I try to use the Bruce Lee method to hunting and books, take what you like and disregard the rest. I kind of did that with the Benoit book on Big Bucks The Benoit Way. I had tracked deer before and the few times I tried it I had no luck, after reading this book I kind of dismissed it as these elite guys who could do stuff I never would accomplish. Being a "Still Hunter" I always preferred ambush as my primary way of approach. Well after watching all 5 videos I was convinced I could add this to my hunting ability. I finally got snow and started to drive the roads only problem was I could not find a large buck track to follow after 2 days, so into the woods I went. After finding a small buck track I could not help but to go after him for the day as he was the 1st one I found in 3 days of driving/hiking trails... To say I was thrilled by the end of the day would be an understatement. Jumping him 3 times and seeing his track happen upon 2 does was thrilling especially hearing him grunt in front of me sent my heart racing. He was probably a yearling and would have gotten a pass had I caught up to him but what a thrill!!!! Retreating at 3 pm I made it out 30 min after dark, what a day and now I am hooked on another way of hunting... PS: I probably made every mistake a tracker can make that day, lol... Have to look up every once and a while... Charles Alsheimer's book A Guild To Adirondack Deer Hunting is still my Bible. Just finished Deer & Deer Hunting the serious hunters guide by Robert Wegner, Foreword by Leonard Lee Rue the third, Afterword by Fred Bear. I though this was one of the more interesting books as it pertains to my outlook on hunting... Very sporting and ethical and promotes archery in a spiritual way many can appreciate. One of my friends asked me " How do you always get into the deer?" I tried to explain that while I do not get up into the woods as often as I would like, when I see the sign I can get a very good interpretation of what transpired from my knowledge gain in books... That has given me more chances at deer, just wish I did not have so many mistakes over the years... From fogged scopes to forgetting about trajectory at a deer 10 ft away with a gun sighted in at 50 yards to leaving the scope on 9X I have had my share of mistakes... Get back to camp and unload the gun just to find I never loaded it... ARG!!! Dry fire on your prey, dam hammer block... Hit the tree stand with your bow... Yep I have messed up with the best of them!!! Wish my reading helped but experience has no substitute... And don't any of you even mention that word BUCK FEVER... LOL

OK Wooly that is it, no more reporting deer to the DEC, LOL... I don't care IF they follow you home... That is some funny stuff right their Apoallo! From now on any deer that follow you home are still free, just keep them out of the fenced area(s)! If you don't feed them they are not pets... That's funny Wooly I always felt that way about the "stupid" deer but I never seem to find a big stupid deer lol! Bet they sense you as calm opposed to in stealth "hunting" mode. Summer abundance, long time since last years chase? Easy of living. To say they do not have an awareness about our physical presence and state of mind would be a joke. Just another one of those things that make them unique! As we study and revere them in their natural environment we are in their house and as guest we are observed and viewed upon with trepidation. Those who loose that fear seem as pets even though they are free as the birds. I think easy conditions could cause that, possibly? Maybe I am reaching... Use that last line for any other deer that seem like pets, I will vouch for you...

Arg that sucks. Stick a small piece of tape over the area to prevent it from happening again. Unless that is your trap, lol... Dad says "They taste good!".

Well plain and simple I bet if you put 100 of any(Big game) animals in a 1 mile area they will cause havoc on the plants... Simple math those area's with that many deer need to be culled... The land can only hold so many deer, 100 per square mile WOW what a difference from the ADK... I think we can all agree that any study with that many big game animals in that small of an area will have issues. I understand this is a wintering area but I am sure that area recovers after the spring thaw and rains, they have for years, that is why the deer keep coming back... I wonder if this was a year round study. "They hope to use the findings to help identify strategies that would help strike the right balance for the ecosystem." Saplings will grow, life finds a way plain and simple, mother nature does not need our help in getting hemlocks to grow. Sounds like a tree hugger to me... Will deer yards suffer when all those deer are present, yes. But every year they recover and the deer return... Sounds like a useless study to me, JMO...

This is actually a night shot with a new high res camera and the moon in the background. I put a glow stick on the trail to lure the deer, and so they can see what they are doing, lol. .

Incredible Trail Cam Photo (Death On A Log Crossing)
NFA-ADK replied to WestchesterBowman's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Personally I view the yote as a presence of good game, be it rabbit, fawn, mice, turkey or bucks they have to eat too. To say they do not put a dent in the population would be wrong but I don't think they prey on adult deer that are healthy, usually. They are survivors that is for sure! Many hunters like myself try to get them when they cross our paths but they are wild, fast and hard to stop when on the move, true survivors with senses and instinct to match. Very cool pic!!! -
Plain and simple to me... Smoking is a personal choice. Do I know it is bad, yes, do I want to quite, sure. But I must say with a upset stomach it helps me get by... It alleviates my stress and calms my nerves. Even getting the bad new of a family member with cancer has not stopped me, yet... Will it improve my health, yes. But I have to agree these advertisements are pathetic... And in so far as surveys or statistics, well they can include or exclude what ever they want in the survey to meet their goals. I am not saying smoking is good, I just don't agree with these types of adds that are allowed. I have had the TV on while eating, hands too filthy to touch the remote and seen these adds, probably part of the reason I cut the TV cable... My main point would be this. If the Government did the same thing to food, booze, and fuel as it did to cigarettes... Well everything would be DOUBLED... Cigarettes cost 5 $ then add a 5 $ tax, that is why they are 10 $. Gas 10$ a gallon Groceries use to cost 200$ now they are 400$ Drinks at the local bar are now 8-14 $ Soda 2 liter 2$ on sale Bullets, guns, and all accessories for guns and hunting, doubled. How far do want to let them control you, you may want this but as for me I will never agree with Government controlling what I do by taxation. And yes this is a forum on the internet, it is all opinion based...

His book on Adirondack deer hunting has been the bible in my camp since 1988. To say he is knowledgeable would be an understatement, personally I feel he is unmatched in his field... I try to hunt anytime from Nov 7 week on...(My main hunting trip ADK rifle, I have come to the conclusion this is why I am on this planet... lol Just can not think about anything else...) Moon or weather predictions do not matter to me as traditionally this is peak rut, that week or two I will be stalking deer the entire day light hours... As much as I like to hunt the peak rut, I debate going a week or two later in the season for tracking snow as this is my best method for finding bucks on the move. Super storm Sandy threw a wrench into last years hunt causing me to hunt solo for 13 days, at least one other hunter was with me for the first four days. Too much snow cut my trip short as my tires were not working in the 8 + inches on the ground. Typically I hunt from Nov 6th - 16th or 23rd depending on work/vacation time. Again I debate going a week or two later just for tracking snow... If I had my way I would hunt from Nov 5th till the end... But then I would need a new job... Wanted: Computer repair/network tech job for setting up remote camera's to watch wildlife, willing to work on farm equipment and farm. Willing to travel, lol... Willing to relocate as long as deer are present... Ahh to dream...
