Ask the farmer! Person on premise has the inside scoop. In so far as scent, when on stand or blind it is critical to be down wind. While I have not stand hunted in years the scent game and wind is critical to ambush. Glassing from a good vantage point can really help as stated. Nice property, good luck! Looks like great potential!!! If you need help covering the property during season let me know. My best ambushes have been at first light with little to no wind. Shame I missed them both... Tracked both deer the day before with out their knowledge both in snow...

My swamp hunting has been minimal... Most swampy area's seem to be hot spots for night activity and bedding from what I have seen yet this is usually in November. I have seen more activity in swaps during early season bow. Questions 1)Do you think the size of the swamp makes a difference? 2)How about elevation? 3)Do you think the use of these area's changes due to food, rut, season, water levels. EX: Do you think a buck would rather use a swamp higher in elevation during the warmer periods vs cool, rut period down in the low areas w/doe? Does it seem like more doe frequent the lower lying swamps? WOW I just remembered hunting the Cold river in Long Lake 1993-94. It was cold, snow covered ground with a layer of ice on top about 8 inches. Crunchy does not describe how noisy walking was this day, it was deafening! I was approaching a large swampy area down hill. (I had a feeling about it, it felt and looked perfect! I was on edge!!!) About 50-100 yards across and about 400-500 yards long with a small piece of land sticking out 80+ yards in front of me. The 50 ft or so I needed to go to see the area took about 35 minutes or so. It was still way too loud and fast, even prone I broke though the ice covered snow... My last 2 slides into clear view saw a buck run up the opposite hill. Never caught up to him... That was fun. So crunchy and exposed I gave him up after inspecting his tracks. He heard me approaching yet stayed to see what I was, once identified I was busted and he was gone.

Basic Hunting Gear for Suffolk County
NFA-ADK replied to Lord of War's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I still have a cotton suit that is reversible camo, one is snow, nice but bad in rain. That's when the rains suits come into play... PS: Thanks Mom and Dad for that Gore-Tex suit 20 plus years later I still use it... -
Basic Hunting Gear for Suffolk County

Tick proofing yourself is a must... Lyme is no joke... Considering that you will be in a blind or stand and its your 1st year you do not need to spend a lot on clothes. Use existing clothes as your base layer(As long as they are scent free, or clean them...) then get an outer layer for your camo. A extra large long sleeve shirt can go over existing clothes for camo. As you progress in the sport each year you can get more clothes... Otherwise these are some of my experiences with clothes. You get what you paid for. Stay away from 100% cotton and invest in good socks if you like to hike far... Boots as well (Cotton is ok on dry warm days...) . Suits are great for warmth but suck when its time to go to the bathroom... Bibs are great and the jackets on the market with all the layers they provide are amazing but expensive. I usually have a day pack when ever I hunt even on LI with the bow. I usually do not wear rain gear but keep them in my pack. Dicks sporting goods has camo jeans 40$ I use light camo tops 10-30$ and the camo rain gear 100$. I usually dress in layers. Plain and simple it keeps you warm and keeps the bugs out... I use to use fleece, now polypropylene . Polypropylene for base layer Gore-Tex outer when in extremely harsh conditions up north. So many different fabrics on the market, many have a type of blend of cotton or spandex or silk. As you progress you will find out what you need. Each fabric has its advantages and are pretty amazing compared to what we use to use. Base sock, Under armor, polypropylene, cotton sock goes over sweat pants, T- shirt, sweatshirt, jacket, jeans, hat. All layers sprayed with repellant except for base layer and under armor. (Including rain gear) If it is early season tape your ankles and wrists to help keep out the bugs. PS: I was to afraid of the ticks to hunt before a good frost, (On LI) started in December and a few days I was way to hot but would not loose a layers of protection out of fear... Lyme scares me... After using the permethrin for chiggers and ticks I was satisfied with the results, just not sure I want to risk early season but I think I will try it this year seeing how effective clothes treatment works... Check your local sporting stores for sales, that is how I get my basic layers... I still have a Gore-Tex suit from 1989! Comes out in the worst rain/snow then back to rain days... Good luck! -
Hoping to get the Month of November off this year from the 6th on. See how well that goes over at work... This year I will have snow tires and chains so I do not have to leave if we get over a foot of snow like last year. I have 3-4 groups of doe patterned and 3 nice bucks in the area that I hope made it through last year. I tend to key on the doe patterns unless I find a buck track, then I follow and try ambush or stalking depending on circumstances. Snow allows me tracking if present and is so exciting to have the deer in front of you all day playing cat and mouse I am trying to get my 1st "tracked deer" under my belt this year and my 3rd ADK buck. Might even get my first bow kill this year, again if lucky... Hoping for an early Frost on LI this year as I am hesitant to go hunting on LI with all the Lyme ticks in the area until that happens. Sep 27th in the ADK is fun scouting but extremely hard to still hunt with a bow, just too much growth still present at that time. Found a good ambush spot to try this year, just hope the bucks are still frequenting the area!!!

Thanks for all the support it is greatly appreciated! Always rough when we loose a friend or loved one. Especially under suspicious circumstances. Just lost a uncle yesterday, arg they say they come in 3's, tough month so far. Treading lightly... Benefit Sunday to help with funeral cost, even harder when it happens on a holiday week and it is extended over 3 weeks. This is a copy of the the speech I gave at the service. Posting this to possibly help others with their speech in times of sorrow and for some extra disclosure for me personally. Chistopher James Flathmann Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and staff comfort me. I wasn't sure why I choose this, yet his epic journey through life was supported by walking stick and later on in life by cane in the valleys and peaks of his life. I ask you not to forget the struggles Chris had but to speak of the victories he won! As we all struggle with the passing of Chris, I pray some will find solace in these words. Protector, Brother, Friend and Son Passion for LIFE! Chris could see things in a way many of us can't. His political views where some times considered out in left field yet those who knew him well understood his point. While I would say "Do not do this on the internet.", he would do just such things I would never dare. He had no fear of the Government and many times challenged their political views with a passion unmatched by anyone. Chris was a defender of what is right and righteous. Protector to his family and friends. He was a defender of the constitution and civil rights. His story telling was epic. He could turn a 165 lb deer into a 200 lb deer. He could turn a 200 lb deer into a 500 lb deer! All though Chris was not big on rallies and protests he was a defender of our country and the liberties he loved. He went against the status quo and was not afraid to show his passion on the internet through facebook and the many other outlets the internet provides. As a young man Chris was passionate about many things. As he progressed in age his body failed him yet even though with great struggle he still made it to the top of the highest peak Mt.Marcy. That was pure determination, that was Chris! While none of us can ever expect to know the fight Chris had to endure through his life, to say he was a champion would be a understatement. He fought through back pain, suffering, seizures and a list of other health issues. His love for life, passion for the great and story telling of epic proportions was the man I know and will remember and is what I ask you all to remember as we celebrate his life, love and passion. Yes this is the man I will remember. Chris is the only person I know who had a pet raccoon... One of the first times I meet him, he said yea go check out the raccoon, he is in the cage. As I approached the beast it snarled at me with the ferocity of a lion!!! Slamming up against the cage wall I was like WT?!? That is a wild animal!!! As he takes the beast out of the cage and places it on his shoulder, still snarling at me with 3 inch fangs and 5 inch claws!!! That amazed me... The many journeys I was with my good friends and Chris. One common factor besides myself in these journeys was his and my best friend Shawn McGauly. Many of these epic adventures were taken with walking stick... Newcomb lake: Where we befriended a DEC officer, shared the lean too with him for a day, awesome trip. Indian pass: Grueling hike where a photo of album type status was taken. Mt.Marcy: Just an amazing trip Long lake and the many trips in deep woods, the cold river and the many excursion we had were priceless. Chris helped set up base camp in remote sections of the deep Adirondacks enduring 70mph winds with deep snow and falling trees. The Rangers cut a path into our camp and informed us we were trapped for 3 days, glade we had food for 7!!! Chris loved that fact that we were trapped!!! Amazing hunts in remote woods! Hiker, adventurer, protector and defender , NFA deep woods hunter, animal lover, Best friend and one I(and many others) called brother, and son. Yes this is the Chris Flathmann I know, the legend I will exalt, remember and will celebrate with every camp fire for his light will shine on through us all. Amen RIP brother God bless the Flathman Family Jeff Calderone NFA-Getsome Thanks for all the support, it's greatly appreciated and helps with the healing.

Hmm Low presser system is usually associated with stormy weather. After the storm comes the calm. I can see how the boot or track made could seem to wash away yet the times we would usual be in the woods would be the calm after the storm so to speak. I can understand why a persons scent would linger in the aftermath of a storm. Calm, damp, light to no wind or updrafts. But Wooly nailed it again... "Don't kid yourself.., rain or shine, deer know when we've been there. I guess what it boils down to for me is if it's an area that receives high deer traffic, the odds are higher more deer will have a reaction to human scent...and conversely... just as many more are apt to have no reaction at all, so it makes it a good killing spot if you want to play the 50/50 odds."

Welcome aboard Frank, Great site w/great people!

Dam pigs!!! That was funny Lawdwaz! Pest species, more ham for my turkey ham cheese sandwich! Shot em every chance you get!

Nice shooting! Varmints beware!!!

Nice work!!! The tittle gives me chills. The second deer pic looks like she is in heaven! Looks like all that work is paying off! Should be "Deep Woods Gold Mine!" lol Awesome!
-
WOW thanks for sharing!!!
-
Interesting to see him looking up at the cam! Nice!
-
Nice pics, even better deer! Agreed with the night shots, another reason I could care less about night time shots is just that fact that they will not be in the area during the day. In deep woods it is nice to see where they are headed but on private land night time shots do not help. Bedding and cover, your insight is hitting the nail on the head IMO Phade. Wow less than 12 weeks until opening day!!! Closer to scratching the deep woods itch!!!

Nice to see the young guns!!!

Saw this video a while ago. Great info and was one of the main reasons I decided not to use them. Most area's I hunt in the ADK are deep woods with little human disturbance. To scare off one potential buck in any of the area's I hunt was too great a risk... Does not mean I will never use them, I just do not like ANY flash or light despite the seeming fact that they do not look up as much and do not seem to be as offended when filmed or flashed from above. Waiting for the cam's that work with out a flash or any noise... Most important thing seems to be getting them above 6ft. Note these deer have been accustom to the cams in this video and still have bad reactions. Just too much risk IMO with a deer in the deep woods not accustom to human smells and funny looking glass that looks like a big eye to them. I think I would be freaked out too if I saw a tree with a big eye, lol. PS: I note certain people do not have the deer looking at the cam's and seem to keep getting the deer to come back, skyhunter has some great pic in his area, I am not sure all his cams are high(some seem to be for small game vs big...) but I figure they might be hidden(or camouflaged) in some area's making them harder to detect... As much fun of a toy and tool they are, again the risk in deep woods just seems to great. Does not mean I can not put them in area's I want to push the deer out of!!! Just wish I could direct them to an area... So tempting to use them, not sure how much longer I can wait for better working models... Feel like I am missing out, thankfully many post their pics to keep me from scratching that itch... So far!

Plain and simple baiting is not hunting, even if you stop before the season they will still frequent the area looking for a free meal... And as I stated before it can be extremely detrimental to your herd. But yea compare it to speeding if you want... Speeding = Ticket/fine/court/possible drivers license suspension Baiting= Ticket/fine/court/Revoked hunting rights Not the same to me... One is a court day and small fine with a slap on the wrist. The other = wall of shame and no more hunting, not exactly the same risk IMO! Baiting is known to draw large amounts of deer from large area's if done properly. This equates to larger numbers of herds coming in contact with each other and possibly spreading disease. CDW I believe was a large contributing factor to this law. If something bad happens to one of those deer and they come in contact with the food source it can spread easily from saliva is what I understand to be the main transfer agent. I am sure it is nice to get photo's of your local population but consider the ramifications is all I am saying... The law is not just to make money, these reason are legit. That being said people do what they want, I am sure my explanation will not change anyone here...

I bet this cop has kids, when the innocent are threatened, well plain and simple he did the right thing. I had a officer visit my house one time to explain to my brother how his youngest was out drunk the night before passed out on someone's front lawn... It is a testament to the force, the fact that they care about our children they way they would their own as many are fathers and mothers... God bless NYS police officers, ALL OF THEM! Personally I feel officers should have more hands on training with their weapon. Until a recent injury I use to shoot my bow about 9 months out of the year. This is so when I choose to take that one special deer I get an excellent shot. Thirteen years of bow hunting and I have yet to pull the trigger... Just like many officers do not shoot their gun for long periods, I feel they should have to pass a certain accuracy to be allowed into the field with a gun... (If not than a set amount of range time per week.) Not sure all would pass a simple 20 ft test to see if they can hit a paper plate... But if they are in charge of the public safety they should have enough ability to know what is a good or bad percentage shot... JMO... They need to work on a new law banning knives, now that the criminals are using them... (sarcasm)

SO much for checks and balance...
