  1. Once you get some proficiency try a 3D shoot they are a lot of fun!
  2. It always amazed me how they can survive so long in such harsh conditions. Shows rain for Monday -Wednesday hopefully it brings the snow back down a bit and gives some relief.
  3. Simple fix. End seasons, make hunting season start in October for all weapons. Full inclusion for every weapon. Bows that require use of both hands to shoot are allowed first 2 weeks only, after that its any weapon you choose that is legal in the area. No more muzzleloader season bow season is first 2 weeks only.
  4. I think you are dwelling to deep for this. Think about this: After the last mass extinction no animals survived including dinosaurs so deer today are after that time period and would have no chance at those genes. "The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which occurred approximately 66 million years ago (Ma), was a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time." Otherwise known as the K/T event. I think its more reaction to something unknown like stated before be it scent, movement, noise or other causing that fight of flight response. If any is repeated enough that animal will become aware and always react to say a hunter in a stand or another that smokes or excessive bee's wax or regular deodorant or movement in trees.
  5. Funny how you don't have to be miles away to get into trouble. Real easy to get turned around at night, I constantly look at my compass and hate to use my light as it kills my night vision. Worst is dark and fog, basically you are blind. GPS is a valuable tool if the fog allows GPS reception. One day in Moose river I hiked out from Indian lake back to camp with no light used as the moon was full and bright as can be about 4 miles back to camp. Next night I was stuck about a half mile from the road and could not see 10 feet the fog was so thick. I hiked about 45 min and found I was still a half mile from the road but closer to camp. What a pain to hike down a steep area but better than going up in the dark. I have been stuck in swamps more than I can remember, they simply get me into trouble so I skirt them now if possible.
  6. Dam ApexerER that was a long hike! By now most of my hunting partners know not to worry about me after dark but I still tell them to keep the radio on. Sometimes just talking to someone while you can't see past 10 yards in the dark is comforting and a bit stressing when no one answers. Back in bear trap swamp I was turned around for a bit then saw a bear, he lead me to the trial, lol. I can say I have been stuck way to many times, sometimes close to camp. Next to Lost ponds camp site in Moose River is some of the thickest area I have ever hunted, along sumner stream. Buddy Chris saved a guy who fell in the stream about 5 years ago. I was about 300 yards from camp and was having major issues seeing anything, it was foggy, and for some reason smoky. When I finally got to within 20 yards of the trail I yelled to my buddy to come down the trail so I could see where it was. I said did you hear me, he said "yes that's why I built a signal fire to help" but it only added to the fog, lol. My buddy gets lost on LI! I said WHAT! You hike the ADK with me how did you get lost? He found the magnets in his gloves where throwing the compass off. No big deal, he had to walk about a mile or so to get back. So what does he do, buys me a pair with magnets in them!? Thanks? Buddy? WT! I asked are you trying to get me lost! He just laughed.
  7. Looks great, awesome buck, congrats!
  8. The last part of your last sentence is KEY!!! When in doubt or trouble sit think, then think some more. Panic is the worst enemy of people in peril.
  9. Try the elite, big difference in draw cycle and peak hold. I am looking at the ritual, good reviews so far, have to shoot it before i pull the trigger.
  10. Buddy is getting one, he really likes it my other friend shot it and said its a great bow just to small for him.
  11. No I believe this is learned and must be learned by each individual. Not all deer have predators in the trees, with the exception of big cats deer do not have an instinct to look up until a danger is seen. I would imagine area's with big cats deer would look up more but again it has to be learned. The deer that is killed by an above predator has no chance at passing his or her genes and ones that survive do not pass this trait along. IMO In so far as them developing more tools to avoid hunters I feel they all ready have all the tools needed to survive. Simply put if you look at all the different continents and prey on them they all look similar and probably have not changed in many many years. No need to change perfection!
  12. It's true if a deer sees many dangers in trees he will start to look up more. Especially when those arrows hit or fly by him making an unnatural sound after he sees danger. He is simply reacting to his environment, most deer never get to see that person in the tree until its to late. We call them doe, lol j/k doe look up also.
  13. One inch is acceptable to me at any range just wish I could do it! (At any range!) I do field archery so we shoot out to 80 yards in competition. I am actually looking at a new bow for target, pulling 65lbs back over 100 times is a bit much for me in these shoots but its fun. I might set the new bow up at 55 lbs to relieve some of the stress. That hissing noise is more from the fletching than the tips but tips can add more to it.
  14. The guys you want to talk to are the techs for bow set up, shooting form and instruction is not very complicated for shooting a bow. Once you have the basics most learning is really done by shooting with other experience shooters. Anyone can tell if your form is off or if your dropping your arm or not following through IF they are experienced at it. U-Tube has many instruction videos on how to execute proper form. I shoot at Suffolk Archers, if you are interested in checking the club out send me a PM. I can take you on the tour and give some instruction on shooting form. No charge!
  15. They are fun, took my Dad in one with my twin sister for his Birthday. Not as fun as jumping out at 3000 ft but still fun. Views are amazing.
  16. Yes when new babies are born and when matting season starts are 2 times deer will move out to a new home range. (Not really a migration.) Low food quality, availability and overpopulation can all contribute to migrations also then you have those dam human's building everywhere deer need to find new area's. Fire is another factor that can push them out. I don't believe they do it often unless it is to find better food. From what I have read some herds will do this but most deer do not "migrate" in the traditional fashion. Unless you consider yarding a migration, I guess you could.
  17. Welcome aboard! Great to have you, jump right in just wear a thick coat! We like to argue about anything join in!
  18. ok show a video of you holding the sting back with your fingers, lol. Or did you not understand the post. Next you will say I was talking about the trigger and how it was just sarcasm.
  19. Yes when you actually need TWO hands to shoot it! PS: Not everyone using a bow has a 29 inch draw length or poundage yet everyone shooting a crossbow will get the same speed, go figure. Try getting those speeds with a 27 inch draw length at 55 lbs and just because it is a compound bow does not mean you need a trigger, I have a few guys who shot them with fingers! Try that with a crossbow!
  20. Your words not mine, I just said they where not a real bow.
  21. Something you have to hold the string back with your muscles to shoot.
  22. Cross bow is not a real bow either yet they shoved that into the season, this will be next, then we will have gun powder charged arrows. They all shoot the same projectile so they must be equal will be the mentality.
