  1. Baiting is knowingly putting out a pill of food or minerals with the intent of drawing a deer to that exact spot and can also be timed if using a spreader on a timer. Attracting is usually done with plots that allow the animal to pick and choose where to enter and exit and has no specific location where all the food is pilled so the animal has the advantage of coming into the area at any time when the plots are present. Plots can't be done year round due to winter, baiting can. This can also be done with mock scrapes, urine, pre-orbital, scents like apple and even cover scents to mask you and attract prey.
  2. I just resprayed my clothes that Sawyers works, I will not even think about entering the woods without my clothes treated. Brother and Dad both got lyme disease, it's no joke be diligent! I hang every thing in the garage including socks, underwear and boots on plastic under the clothes I am spraying. Hat, gloves, neck warmers, gator, clothes bag, back pack and belt pack. I don't usually do another spray in January due to freezing temps but at that time I will not hunt if its above 40. It works just do it at the recommended stages, I think 40 days or 6 washes.
  3. So he shot it in the Dark, over a bird feeder(yes this is considered baiting!!!) next to his stealth cam and did not tag the buck, nope nothing wrong here? LMAO are you kidding me! The hunter next door that spends hours tracking, setting up, practicing and planning probably called the SLOB in! He woke up to Bang, wt? Is that the buck I have been chasing for 3 years, DAM IT! Hello DEC, I need your help! Thanks for catching another illegal hunter who thinks baiting, shooting at night and poaching(Yes deer are protected animals that is why we have rules.) are all ok, as long as I don't get caught! Unreal!
  4. Great to hear! Feel better!
  5. Depends on the class of buck. I would not drive the extra distance for a 2 year old but if the bucks are in the 3 year old plus range I am driving the extra distance especially if it has a larger amount of them.
  6. I shoot anything over 500 lbs and I am calling for help! lol I called for help with a 200 lb deer! Worst case I would at least quarter it out, crazy.
  7. Now the estimate is down to 600 lbs lmao, funny how some guys overestimate weight! Still a big bear! Probably around 500 lbs Plus. I agree with most, why shoot it if you don't want it. Seems that the answer to that was fear and self preservation. Guys was scared as would most but that does not mean you need to shoot, real easy to say this sitting behind a computer vs having a 500 pound plus bear a few yards away! I can see how perspectives might change when in that situation!
  8. Cool shot, thanks for sharing!
  9. Welcome aboard, great to have you!
  10. Best days was opening day after calling a doe under my stand, I gave her a pass along with the other 2. Buddies friend got his first buck, hard to beat that. Next was hunting in the ADK on my B-day, jumped an ok buck camping by doe beds. No shot but just a great day to be out. Worst day was probably when another hunter walked up to my stand with a climber and all his gear around an hour before dark did not see anything after the intrusion.
  11. Most computers at the same price range have the same processor (CPU) and ram. Do some comparing as the holidays get close you should see some deals. Most computers now are pretty similar so when someone asks what to purchase I ask what have they used before, if you like them purchase from them again. HP, Dell, E-machines are all similar in design and functionality. So shop a bit and compare CPU and ram to get a deal, usually you will see one that has a better processor or more ram at the same price. You can use the monitor you already have if its still good but often you get a new monitor with the new PC, otherwise you would just purchase the tower alone and keep the keyboard and mouse if they work ok. Package deals get you the most for your buck. Good luck. IT Tech since 2000
  12. From the sound of my friends voice he was given an option, get it out of the woods the next day or we will, DEC. He made it sound like the DEC wanted it more that this guy did. Yea these guys where some crazy clothes for hunting lmao! Sounded like the guy was willing to give up easily due to so much work! Crazy, I would had gotten help from somewhere, even posting here if I had to! No way I would have given up my game! My buddy was pretty upset this guy did this also and that the DEC took the animal.
  13. The main reason deer thrive in the US was due to us clear cutting when we expanded our domain. This included logging, clear cut, and controlled burns. Simply put deer survive now but would thrive if we cleared some land. High canopy is bad for all animals that live on the ground. I love hunting deep woods but when you are the only person to see deer every year and the only person out of 8 plus hunters to even see a buck you know something is OFF with the woods. The only thing I see thriving in the ADK are birds. Clearing land has a good effect on many animals and it would benefit them and the harsh winters they face every year. They survive in the ADK now but would thrive if we helped out with clearing some land. Its a shame when I see more animals in one day on Long Island than a full week in the ADK. But we have a excellent mix of open woods, good soil, farms and manicured yards to keep them feed well and healthy. Many of the small towns in the ADK are great examples of how well deer thrive on OUR open lands, I have never seen more deer in the ADK than in areas around these towns. I saw almost 30 deer in one day in town then the next few days in deep woods provided no sightings. We can blame bad hunters or inexperience on some but when you talk to a few other groups of guys who never see anything it gives the big picture of how desolate the ADK forest can be. Do they hike miles like some, probably not but if the woods where managed better for animals vs peoples impression of what forest should be it would benefit us all. 30 years of hunting the ADK and I have seen about 40 bucks of which 10 or so where bigger than 6 pts and at least 2 years old (Shooters). Luck enough to get 3 but my other hunting friends have only seen 2 bucks in that time, one spike that was passed and one 4 pt taken last year. It would be nice if other hunters that do not have the insight knowledge or experience to see a deer get some sort of chance. The benefit to the local towns would be an added factor, no hunter wants to go every year and see nothing. Many simply quite hunting these areas yet if they had some success they would come back every year. That would provide a good boost to many towns as hunters pay for food, lodging, gear and supplies.
  14. Ranger told me a long time ago not to shoot a big bear in the deep back woods. He said between the claws and fur you will have an extra 50 lbs of twigs and brush that just seem to catch the hair and claws. He said it's like dragging a pile of jello. But he said if its around the camp site wack em, we don't want them in the camp sites! Bruce L. Great guy, awesome stories.
  15. And you want nothing to do with this area because those boys are CRAZY!
  16. Invite all of HuntingNY.com to visit and explain to the guy these are the new hunters taking over the spot next year.
  17. 30-30 was the weapon I am told. Guy took 3 shots and was VERY nervous, I would be also with a 30-30 and any bear over 500 lbs is going to take a few of those just to be sure!
  18. I would just bring the butcher, extra bags and HELP! Estimate was just under 700lbs sorry! I though 800 was a bit high.
  19. Large bear taken in Sterling forest. I heard the DEC said he had to have it out the next day so the hunter gave it to the DEC, this is here say... Not sure if the hunter wants to be identified so I cut his face out. Supposedly just under 800lbs!!! Waiting for more pics.
