How many types of game animals have you hunted in your life
NFA-ADK replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I have turkey hunted and gone after yotes but I only target deer. My buddy keeps inviting me to go hunting birds but I will not go on the water in the winter, to much risk for shooting a bird IMO. -
I don't get lost that often and usually the GPS fixes that issue if I am not in fog or a deep valley with no coverage or wet high canopy that stops signal. I have gotten "Stuck" more than I care to admit. Usually this just involves taking the long route back to trail or road.

Best survival rifle ever made
NFA-ADK replied to Hunter007's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
It would depend on what I was surviving! If I had to go into the woods for a year solo it would be the 22, room for extra ammo and it will kill just about anything in NY I would eat. If the Russians invaded I would want my 30-06, if anarchy broke out I would want a semi 223. -
So many places to go the first thing you need to do is pick a spot. 2nd is you better be in great shape! Hiking your gear in one day and setting up camp and braking down camp will require one day each so figure you only have 5 days to hunt if you go for 7 days. If your not in shape you will not hunt very hard after hiking in and setting up! Locations: I hunt Moose River Plains, many locations to hunt in this area. Moose River, Blue Ridge and West Canada Lakes are some of the areas in this location. Siamese Ponds, Hoffman Notch, Vanderwhacker Mountian and the High Peaks offer other alternatives. All really depends on where you want to try. Boat you have access to other area's some include Long lake, Cold River, Cedar River flow along with the many other rivers and lakes available. I would also get all the wood prepped and ready so you don't have to do that when you get to the location and make it remote, so others don't burn all your wood before you get their. Simply put the more you prep the camp site before the less work you will have to do when you get to the spot. Like stated before about prepping wood, the same goes for scouting, you will probably want to do at least 2 trips before you choose a location and then start to prep the area. Do all the hard work before you get to the location. Storing food and supplies before you go will make the trip more enjoyable and fun. Word to the wise: Every year someone looses their life in these remote woods, be prepared for any possible issues, keep in touch with good radios, GPS for location, first aid kit, flashlights and batteries. You phone will not work in most of these areas, leave it in the car as it is dead weight. Water purifier is a must as water is to heavy to carry. Easy trip would be Indian Lake (In Moose River). It's about a 3+ mile hike to the lake on an old dirt road so hiking would be easy along with any items you want to roll in. You could also bring a canoe or kayak and load all the gear in that for transport. The other good thing about this area is it HAS deer!

Charlie's book on "A Guild to Adirondack Deer Hunting" and "Whitetail: The Ultimate Challenge" where 2 books that inspired me to try and become an Adirondack Deer Hunter. His insight and knowledge was unmatched he will be missed dearly. I always looked forward to his rut predictions and his insightful articles. His knowledge, experience and thoughtfulness will live on with his legacy. RIP Prayers to the family. So sad.

Nice they must have just changed it this year!

LMAO Pygmy! You had me rolling with that one!

Not legal in NY. As a matter of fact I was told by a DEC officer you can get fined just having it on your phone while hunting. Kinda funny if one was caught using an app to attract deer.

I want one! So cute! Good luck with her!

Wow its warm on LI compared to some of these temps. 14 deg right now. This is going to be a stalking weekend, no sitting in a tree with these temps!

I love navigating by compass but I have to admit my GPS is an invaluable tool that allows me to navigate much easier in the dark and foggy conditions where you can't see the ridges mountain tops or terrain features. If you go solo often this is a tool you should become an expert at using because often when solo if something goes wrong it will be to late by the time anyone realizes you are in trouble! Self reliance is imperative! Never count on anyone saving you because by the time they find out you need help you might be GONE in deep woods.

My buddy who has access to many properties has a permission slip signed from EVERY land owner. When he gets into a fight over land use and has to call the DEC he has proof he is legal and usually the other hunter does not. This use to be a big issue with my buddy but he has since calmed down a bit. Probably because most of the hunters now leave his area alone. I would have every land owner you have access to sign the document!

I have heard, grunts, soft bleats from doe to fawn, roar, and loud MAAA (Blat) from a dominant doe, the usually alarm snort, startled snort. They are not very vocal unless stressed, frustrated, scared, rut time or separation from fawn. Some of the times they are more vocal is during the rut and spring time after fawns are born and then again during pre-rut they get vocal again. In general they do not "talk" often. Simply put if you are around them enough you will hear them, one advantage I have noticed about stand hunting and passing deer is you gain a bounty of knowledge on how they behave and react to deer calls either from hunters or other deer. I have had the same thing happen as Tommyc50 above but it was a doe. I heard this loud MAAAA call and said dam it another hunter is right over in that area, 5 seconds later the dominant doe came out, she was trying to intimidate 2 other doe in the area it seemed.
