  1. Easy way to find them is find the nest and just keep an eye on it. I had 4 in my back yard, they are pretty funny when young. One checked out my cat when I first brought them outside and was about a foot away, crazy little squirrel. Watching them chase each other when young is pretty amazing how agile they can be at a young age. My cats can't stop watching them during the chase and get real wild as I do not let them outside anymore and then they usually attach each other! lol
  2. Congrats MayTom! You are really living up to your name! Awesome!
  3. Usually they allow a mini mag flashlight, one on the shooter to see the peep and sight and one on the target. At least that is how we do it.

    Challenge

Some people are smart and some not so much. I look at deer the same way, not all are created equal but after 3 seasons they both seem to have a good handle on the woods and become harder to hunt. Dispersal causes some issues with survival but after the 2nd year in a new home range bucks are amazing at staying hidden, doe not as much. Watch a field at sunset and I typically see the doe enter first followed after dark by the larger bucks. Bucks seem to know the danger and allow the doe to "test the water first". Mature bucks are loners more than doe and doe always seem more abundant due to herding. Those facts make doe easier to get simply because there are more together and they tend to travel during the day time in more exposed areas. Bucks because they are solo need to pay attention more because no other deer is present to let them know danger is coming. Hence why they tend to bed up high with a steep cliff to there back and the wind coming up from below. Doe can have large groups and anyone in the group can scatter the bunch. Doe also tend to the fawns and with that obligation have to always look after the kids and tend to sometimes overlook danger, like me smoking and stinking up the woods. Doe often will ignore this warning sign, bucks not so much. I think doe in groups have a better time detecting danger simply because more are present. Bucks will slip up during the rut but that 3-5 day window only happens a few times a year hence I feel they are harder to hunt. The other issue is usually they are surrounded by other deer when they find a hot doe this gives them the edge on danger, not so much when they are checking doe groups as they put on the miles in area they are not as familiar and are usually solo. Is one smarter then the other I would say no but testosterone tends to change males and make them different in many ways. I would also say if you hunt from the ground doe with the larger groups have a clear advantage over any single buck. I think this is why so many bucks are taken at a younger age, they have dispersal, the chase during rut, and scent checking doe beds. All this travel puts them in harms way and if the doe is in heat usually the buck only cares about her scent and has his nose to the ground until she is found and could care less about anything else including hunters. Young bucks can't stop going after doe that smell good, older bucks know the difference between a good smell and a doe that is ready for breading. This is why older bucks only show up a few times a year, and to me seem harder to hunt. 31 years of hunting I have had numerous encounters with doe. Young bucks I have also had many encounters. Older bucks in the 3.5 or better I would say maybe 20 ish encounters over the same period.
  6. This was taken from NY boating web page. Q. Do I have to get the New York Boating Safety Certificate? A. If you were born on or after May 1, 1996, you are required to successfully complete a state approved course and obtain a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat. Additionally, all persons, regardless of age, must complete a Boating Safety Education Course in order to operate a PWC on NYS waters. The required boating safety certificate must be carried at all times while operating the boat. https://www.boaterexam.com/usa/newyork/faq.aspx That is the link with the FAQ's.
  7. Love it! Good luck with it, looks like a great gun!
  8. Where to fish is another story, any lake that has a ramp is usually fishable, just check regulations for the fish you are targeting. Kayaks and canoes can be launched from any location and no permits are needed for them. Depending on your location would depend on what area I would recommend. Where are you located? And welcome aboard!
  9. Any boat will do to start. I have a canoe, Hobie kayak and a john boat, all do not require registration unless you put a motor on it. In so far as power boats look for something in the 14-19 ft range with a good working motor, aluminum preferred as they can take damage and be fixed easily. When purchasing make sure you test the motor and look at the spray out the back that should be good and steady stream or it will need a water pump impeller also check the bearings by jacking up the frame and spinning the wheel. Should have very little play in the bearings and make no noise when spinning. Bearing buddies are awesome, get them and grease the axel at least 3 times a year, more if you take it out often. And be sure to check the bearings at least once a year. Good luck! In NY you now need a safety license to drive a boat or water ski so if you get a power boat you have to get certified. Easy one day course.
  10. Never carry a deer on your back, it looks like a live animal to other hunters and its real easy for the ticks to get onto you. Always keep the deer on the outside of the car or truck and never cover up your game. Use permethrin! My buddy sprays the entire interior of the truck and we have to change at the hunting location before and after hunting so all clothes are in a sealed bag. Don't risk your health its worth the 50$ for a season!
  11. Guess I do it for both but I am really after the antlers. Reality is that I do it more for the enjoyment, comradery, challenge, knowledge and love of the woods. Antlers are just a bonus when you actually get everything right and get one down with a decent rack. The guys who really want antlers scout and use cameras. Like wise Grampy says its not about inches of bone on the animal but when you do get one of these beauties its an amazing sight feel and smell.
  12. That's a hike! Wow! Very cool pics!
  13. Had an issue with my Bushnell. I put too much oil on the gun and sitting in the case I guess it damaged the scope. Brought it back to the dealer and paid shipping and handling only. 2 weeks later I had a working scope again. Its good to see when these companies stand by the product!
  14. Areas with extended periods of deep snow, low food value and abundance are hardships that only the properly developed can thrive in. I would not think they would survive more than 2 hard winters but again they are adaptable. That said if they did get a hold in the ADK I would think they would be hard to remove with so much land available. They are an extremely hardy animal that have thrived in the Americas since being introduced. Besides the destruction they can cause disease would be another major concern of mine. Hope that is one issue the ADK never has to deal with, the animal population is low and sightings are rare but at least they are native.
  15. Wow, very cool, Congrats!!!

  19. Dear Jeffrey, The Assembly Majority helped pass an on-time budget that restored funding to the essential programs and services that millions of New Yorkers rely on. It did not include language to expand crossbow hunting. As always, public participation remains vitally important to the Assembly. Your input is a valuable resource that helps me to better serve our state. Sincerely, Speaker Carl Heastie
  20. Funny thing is that is was probably a cousin of his or brother. Similar G 1 's it looks like. Wonder if the G1 is what did it?
