Very nice buck! Thanks for sharing, cool story. I like the toe heel step!
-
ok but that is a heavy arrow for that poundage, it would be a big difference if he went down a size or two.
-
I switched from a 340 to a 400 spine, works great. Don't look back, with that weight you have the bow set 400's are good. You could probably go even lighter, but I would have to check the charts. I get the same penetration from my 340's as I do with my 400's, that extra speed is worth it. Simply put if you misjudge distance by a few yards a slow bow will miss vs a fast bow will still hit your target. When I misjudge a spot shooting 3D I am usually still in the 10 spot, the slower bows are lucky to stay in the 8 as the drop is greater. Fast bow misjudge can be an inch or 2 drop vs slow 4-6 inch drop.

Wow, love that first pic!

Nice buck, congrats!

Cold weather is best for deer movement. We all hear about the guy who gets one on a 70+ deg day but for the most part cold weather gets them on thier feet during daylight hours.

Congrats on your first for the year!

Thanks for the headsup! Cut the cord over a year ago, happy to find some free hunting shows! Thanks PeltHunter!

It is pretty cool watching them zoom across the sky! They can move pretty fast! Amazing world we live in today!

So I wonder how that 2 week kill only doe is working out
NFA-ADK replied to swank68's topic in General Hunting
Simply stated this new doe only regulation is not gettting more hunters to participate. If anything it is doing the opposite. Earn a buck tag worked great but too many want a one buck only rule. Funny but when I took the hunting course I do not remember anything saying I am responsible for culling the doe population. Now it is my reponsibility? Regardless the DEC has an agenda they want to follow. This way they can say bow hunters failed now we have to cull more deer, here come the snippers that worked so well in the past, joke. The population issue is not with the deer it is with people. But the DEC will just overestimate the population and get all the extra funds to do research on using snipper, bait stations, birth control and every other method that has been tried and failed. This will also justify any changes and trample on the bow season they seem to hate so much. Funny I tried to get into any association to help cull the deer but they never called, yea they really want the deer culled, NOT! They make it sound like they are in dire need of help and then when you offer it they are like "No we are OK, no help needed." (EX: We would rather have snipers at night vs hunters during the day.) You can open up area's to hunt but if the homeowners do not allow you in its hard to cull the population. Sounds similar to out east. But it's the bow hunters fault, give me a brake! -
Sounds good!

Thats just an awesome picture!

First starting out is hard especially if you do not have a mentor. I would start by staking the area. Cover some ground, nothing crazy but a 3 mile loop for the day is about right. This is slow hunting where you go for 5-20 ft up to a few hundred yards stop and post, look for sign, trails, scat, food sources like oaks are great. After you find some deer you can figure out an ambush spot or set up in a ground blind or tree stand. Stalking is the hardest way to hunt, after that comes ground blind then tree stand. If you can find a good spot tree stands are best due to keeping your scent above your prey. If you find what looks like a good spot try to get to that spot before sunrise and see if you have deer come through, if not try late day till dark and make sure your flashlights are good and ready. GPS compass and maps are a must for this. (Nothing looks the same at night in pitch black!) Take off your release once it is dark, DEC considers anyone with a release loaded, or so I was told by an officer. Oaks, beechnuts and other food sources are great to key in on. Thick cover is a deer's best friend do not ignore it. Distress calls are great to jump them out and see where they bed. Get a doe can and a grunt tube! My typical use of blind calling is hit the can 2-3 times followed a few minutes later by a grunt, only one. (No grunt until rut is closer Oct 26 or later.) It gives the impression of a deer group and seems to draw them in as long as you do not over use the calls. Sometimes doe are tired of being chased or do not want to hang with bucks so if your after doe don't use the grunt use the doe can. (They can pinpoint your spot so be ready at a moments notice!) I did not see any regulations about Stewart before October 1st, it is open to the public during bow and muzzleloader. Here is the contact information if you want to ask the DEC. NYSDEC Region 3 21 South Putt Corners Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561-1620 (845) 256-3000 Forest Rangers: (845) 256-3026 Wildlife: 256-3098 Lands and Forests: 256-3076 Law Enforcement: 256-3013 Hope some of this helps, sure a few other member might have other ideas. Take what is useful and disregard the rest. Good luck!!!

Welcome aboad HunterMike! Great place for hunters with some really cool people! 1) Either sex tags are good for any deer. Just make sure you are not in a location with antler restrictions. 3 antlers on one side with tines at least one inch. 2)GPS, Phone, Maps, extra flashlights with batteries. Dressing gloves, extra release, extra clothes when cold out, foot warmers, hot seat. 3)If you want to hunt state parks check with your local DEC, the phone numbers for each region are on thier site and they can be very helpfull in gettting you started. 4)Your scent, be as scent free on the ground as possible. Not sure what else you need to watch out for. Make sure your shooting lanes are clear so when you get a deer in sight you can take a shot. Wear black clothes in a blind, no need for camo, camo works too. Good luck and welcome to the site!

Can some help with tis trail camera picture
NFA-ADK replied to ikaravias1's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Nope you are all wrong! It is that Justin Bieber kid, don't sweat it at all I am sure you can take him! Plus you will have a gun, no problems. He is a punk and just does not want you to hunt that area, if you do see him DONT SHOOT it is not a ghost, just some kid... Now you have to show us pictures of the nice deer you get from this location! Bet it will be very memorable! Good luck and go get them deer! Camera's can distort many things as we have seen over the years. -
I would have to pass that second buck, just not up to my standards.
-
That's ok their sons will take care of that. Plus how do you know the DNA of the next deer is not better? Plenty of good DNA in that area. Bet if this buck was in your sights you would have shot!
