Scariest experience or encounter in the woods or on the water
Larry replied to wooly's topic in General Hunting
Ok hey it was back in the 80’s while on a duck hunting trip up in Dexter NY. I picked up this girl in a bar and I found later her name was Lucy Rotten Crotch ouch! -
Looks like a fisher when they run their feet will be side to side and front and hind will be on top of one another
-
Does it matter, you at the time it was shot though it was special enough to spend the money to have it mounted. So why does it matter what it scores.

Hey Rob there’s nothing wrong with using shotgun. I still use one when I hunt in Monroe County and when I hunt in thick brush where shots are up close. Also you can still shoot a 100yds; I think they are better on drives they swing better than a rifle on a running deer. There nothing that puts a deer down faster than hitting a deer with a big ass hunk of lead.

Do You Support Crossbow Full Inclusion into the NY Archery Season?
Larry replied to tughillmcd's topic in CrossBow Hunting
yes! even though I don't shoot one and don't plan to shoot one -
The ribbing is used primarily to give you a better sight plane then with a rounded barrel it may also vent some heat away from the top of the barrel.

My 444 is sighted in at 50yds and so is my shotgun. A long shot where I hunt is 75yds. My 6mm is dead on at 100 I can still make a 200yd shot without hold over. My 22-250 has a range card out to 600yds that is dead on at 200yds my 22 is dead on at 25yds and one 22 is dead on at 50 ft. for sporter rifle

There is a waterfowl meeting at the DEC region 8 HQ in Avon on Sunday Feb.18th at 10am. One of the issues of concern is that the state is looking at the elimination of the Waterfowl task forces in all the waterfowl zones for season setting. There will be information on this and other topics.

I like Jack and Jim looking for Old Grandad while he’s chasing a Wild Turkey drinking out of a Tin Cup.

Hey stay at home did you ever shoot IHMSA? I shot back in the 80’s. I shot the first time at Mount Morris rod and gun I also shot at Wellsville, Painted Post Pen yan and silver creek, Camillus.

I have an S&W 629DX with an 8 3/8’s barrel it shoots nice I have killed 1 deer with it. I also have a DW 44mag heavy vent 8” I bought back in the 80’s when they came out it came with two barrels one ported for jacketed bullets and one non-ported for cast bullets. That gun is a beast it weighs over 4lb’s. I have killed 11 deer with that gun it is a good shooter. If you can find a DW made in the 80’s I would buy it if you find a DW pistol pac I would pick that up for sure it will have barrels from 2 to 10 inches in it.

would that be replacing a pain in the ass

I’m hoping to have it done in May if it needs to be done. so if everything goes ok I would be ready for deer season in November. I usually take all of November off from work. I have a good surgeon here in Rochester he has worked on my knee before and I trust him. One of the things I like about him is he won’t cut you unless you really need it. He told me one time I make my money doing surgery I will cut you if you want but I don’t think you need it yet. I want you to try therapy and some cord zone shots this was on my other knee and that worked

I may have to have a full knee replacement. What I would like to know is what the down time is and how the mobility is afterwards any info would be appreciated

Larry replied to The_Real_TCIII's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Try Miss Kay’s squirrel brains! OH boy the squirrel rut is on I better take the first 2 weeks in February off are there a tail restriction in place with a 3 inch minimum. -
Take one step back problem solved

My son has a good drone and I wanted to check out a place to hunt ducks on rattlesnake hill wma. It was about 1 ½ miles in and I have bad knees and I didn’t want to walk in that far and find no water in there. So we used the drone first. He can fly that thing I would have crashed and burned. He got some good video and could fly it right down to the water and fly it around. He even got GPS chordates. Pretty cool scouting tool.

So why all the articles about CWD making the rounds lately?
Larry replied to goosifer's topic in Deer Hunting
Here is why there are so many articles on CWD it’s spreading and contrary to what some think it is always fatal to deer. If CWD ever jumps the species barrier to humans it would mean the end of deer hunting. I would google CWD in white tail deer there is some good information out there on CWD. -
If I wanted to use a carbine I would try to by a Ruger 44 mag carbine. the bullet weighs more than twice what the 30cal does and has 1651efp at the muzzle.
-
If you are talking about a M1 carbine round and not a M1 Grande (30-06) or a M1A1 (308) round would say why would you want to hunt deer with it. The M1 carbine round its standard round is 110gr FMJ with a muzzle velocity of about 2000 FPS that comes out to be about 977 energy FLB’s at the muzzle. If you reload you would have more options for bullets but it is still under powered for deer hunting. Here is a quote from my hornady reloading book on the 30 Cal carbine. As a hunting round it should be limited to plinking and small game.

First let me say this is not directed at everyone who’s on this topic. How did this topic go from a Quote From The Late Charlie Alsheimer. To who can be the BIGGEST DICKHEAD.

I would just by a scope with a BDC radicle or an adjustable turret. If you have not been trained how to use Mil-dots and don’t have a place where you can shoot 500yds or more you would never know if you are putting the right dope on your scope, if you can’t shoot that far. I would get an adjustable turret. sight in at 100yds set the turret to 0 for 100yds then adjust your scope till you are dead on at 200yds and write down the setting. Then adjust to 300 write that setting down keep doing that till you get to 500yds.then turn the turret back to 0 and see if you are still dead on at 100. You will need a range finder in the field.

Sum up your season- partys over ! .........
Larry replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Hunting
I had a great season a buck in bow that dress over 180lb’s and a nice fat doe that dressed over 120lb’s. That’s 6 years in a row I killed a buck whose live weight would have been around 200lb’s or better. I saw deer almost every time I went out. I Passed on a lot of small bucks and a nice bear. I know the bear is a sow I have lots of trail cam pictures of her with a cub -
Combo shotguns are they legal to deer hunt in shotgun only zones?
Larry replied to Hunter007's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Guy your point is what you may be able to use a 410 in pa but you can’t in NY for deer. Minimum in NY is a 20ga. -

Do not know but even if it is, why would you want to use one? The rifle barrel is on top with the sites the shotgun barrel is on the bottom and it’s smooth bore. To aim with a slug you would have to take a WAG.
