Yes it is Skip Perry. The pics look great nice work. I always wanted to try to make a wing bone call, but just found it easier to give the bones to Skip. Beside I heard that the hen bones work better. I haven't killed a hen turkey in years.

Thanks, I know exactly where I can find them.
-
not sure where to find leeks, I know when I turkey hunt a lot of times I can smell onions. Are the green leaves I just walked through leeks? I'll have to try and pull some and see if they have a bulb.

You need to try to find what direction they are traveling. You are hearing them from the roost, when they fly down did you notice they sounded different? try to figure out where they go by crow calling to get them to respond. You don't want to be using turkey calls unless you are hunting them, if they sneak in quite and you bump them they may not respond to that call again. If you are hearing birds you are in a good spot, some days they just don't gobble a lot, don't loose patience. Try to get in real early 1.5 hrs before sunrise, and tip toe as close as you can to the area you heard them from the roost. Don't call at all, just sit tight, full camo, and just observe what you see and hear. They might be with hens and they will follow them, you need to know where they might go so come opening day you can get ahead of them. Good luck! PS where is there a steep ravine near the city of Tonawanda?

Spurs are the only way to know how old a bird really is. It's the first thing I check after the bird is down. I always look for the beard and fan to be sure it is an adult, but unless the bird is right on top of me I rarely can see spur length. Am I missing some thing? Is there some trick to judge spur length at 20+ ydrs?

How did the raffle go? Do you sell wing bone calls? I would like to see some of your other work. I give my wing bones (when I'm lucky enough to get them) to a guy who makes calls and he donates one every year to our local turkey banquet. If you are into competition call making you may have heard of him...he is from Delevan ,NY.

very nice looking call! is the art work wood burned?

Doc, I think it is more of a trophy thing. Its a long beard contest! I personally let jakes walk and I don't shoot a buck smaller than 8pt. It is my own restrictions, I certainly don't have anything against those that do, each to his/her own. I do it mainly because it is the only way I can help the population become adults. If you take out a spike or a jake they do not get any older/bigger.

Binoculars Recommendation
2012_taco replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I agree with Lawdwaz , spend what you can, the good ones are not cheap! I have a pair of Nikon Monarch 10X42, they are not heavy, mid size, and with a shoulder harness they are perfect for me. I think Nikon has the best optics for the $$$. <3 bills. -
trying to be creative I used Gonehntn because if I'm not home or working then my wife knows I've gone hunting.

Sorry about the twist, there was an older guy who worked on the wood lathe everyday in the shop, sorry I can't remember his name. Ray I believe he was always making salt and pepper grinders. did some awesome pieces. -
Yes the dino is great, go whenever I can, love to ride to Rochester for bbq, the new one in buffalo needs some breaking in. and the parking sucks.

Been to Euclids after Cicero hockey tourneys. And a nice place on the inlet north of the rinks(don't remember the name) and of course the Dino in Syracuse for BBQ!!

Thanks for the info. I usually take my bows to Roy at Nick's on Kenmore Ave., but after hearing about a new place on RT.5 in Akron (on this forum) and they are an Elite dealer I thought I would give them a try. Just was surprised with the estimate and when I asked if the go over everything while it is being serviced, I was told a tune up would be between 20-40 extra. It just seems to me as long as you got the bow and you are a registered Elite shop you would check it out completely with out any question. besides once you change the string and cables don't you have to set up the bow from scratch anyway? The second part of the equation is I have been thinking of selling the bow and getting a newer Elite (love the new models)and that money would go far as a deposit on the new bow.
-
How much should one pay to have the string and cables replaced on an Elite Gt500 (2009) ? I haven't had it done in years since my last bow a Martin Magnum. I don't remember what it cost but I was just quoted $120 plus 40 to tune it up. Sounds a little high to me. Any thoughts?

Yes, the shop is empty, I know the guy who bought most of the tools from Dave's daughters. He wants to open up a similar shop but can not find a building in the same area. The owner wanted 2x the rent after Dave died and now it is proposed to be torn down to add more parking for the front have of the building, for offices. We may have met, I worked with Dave in the shop for probably the last 8 years. He taught me a lot about working with wood, I really miss him. He was a great guy ,super generous! I hunted his property 2 years ago for spring turkey he always had a lot of birds. Small world, we probably know a lot of the same people from the shop. PM me we'll talk. -
Get it home by may, I'd love to see it during turk season. Great looking bear! congrats.

Ok, I tried to camo dip my turkey gun and I really screwed it up. It looked like s#*t, so I rubbed it all off with paint thinner while it was still wet. Went to the local hardware store and bought 3 cans of Krylon camo paint(khaki, green, and brown) and 1 can of flat clear. Primed the gun and painted it with an evergreen branch as a template then 4-5 coats of clear. it turned out pretty good. Looks like the old woodland camo. I'll post some pics soon. -
if you are using natural casings then you need to rinse them out by running water through them, that should show any pin holes. When I make breakfast sausage I just make patties, cook them right up and freeze. I use them for breakfast sandwiches, very convenient just thaw in the microwave while I cook the egg. YUM!

2014 HuntingNY Spring Turkey Classic

I missed the dead line last year, I'm in!! If you could use a box call for a prize PM me. -
normally no, I try not to shoot jakes, but at the same time if he gives you a good hunt and comes in gobblin, why not.? Last year I screwed with 4 jakes from a blind at 10 ft. they couldn't see me moving the call so I keep playing with them to see their reaction, as it turns out the big guy was waiting in the wings and I wouldn't have had a chance to bag him if I shot one of the jakes. Killed him at 40 yds. as he tried to sneak behind the blind.
