  1. A salute to a hero in blue and prayers for him and his family.
  2. Another site we used in Maine is VRBO vacation rentals by owner. We used to get a three bed two bath with two wood stoves plus much more for $700 for the week. I hope you guys get as lucky as we did. There are many in NY as well.
  3. Great hunt Great story Congrats
  4. On the original question I always pack a back up long gun on trips. Usually my 870 with both barrels one for big game and one for small if I tag out which rarely happens and when it does I usually rest in camp and tell my story to anyone who will listen lol. BTW I do know a guy who was attacked by a bear while deer hunting in the ADKs. He emptied his rifle and was loading single rounds while the bear with a broken shoulder was crawling at him while he backed up to stay out of reach. Sounds like a great time to have a side arm but also explains why so few dead hunters; we have weapons with us. The one time I took one rifle was my moose hunt and I had equipment trouble lucky my co-permittee loaned me his 7mm-08 to practice with and take my bull otherwise an expensive once in a lifetime hunt would have been ruined due to my negligence.
  5. While black bear kills are rare there are enough to be aware. Not too long a baby was taken by a bear in the Catskills. Campers were attacked in Tennessee recently. Plus you upped the ante I don't want to be attacked by a bear even if I survive. I believe one of the members on this site was deer hunting recently and was attacked when he walked up a downed tree and the bear was hiding under it. I think it was G-Man. I am not paranoid and don't carry my pistol every time I hunt because I'm not allowed to for crossbow and black powder anyway but I would not argue with those of us who do.
  6. Another vote for the 7mm-08.
  7. I know I'm like a broken record but I think you're better off joining a club upstate with land to hunt. There was one in Sullivan County on this site looking for members maybe three hours away. If they are too expensive look around there are plenty some with land but no cabin so you have to stay in a motel or camp. Good luck.
  8. You should try to sell your videos because they are better than most TV shows and contact Crossman about being a rep for their products.
  9. There's a club asking for members in Sullivan county on this site you should check out.
  10. Hey guys, there's a club in Sullivan county asking for members on this site that looks good. Hope this helps
  11. Sounds like a good deal if you can afford it.
  12. Good luck on your retirement. How far do you want to travel? I'm four hours and it's far for weekends but any further and it would be only for week long trips and I would only use it a few times a year plus the locals will trespass much more IMO. I started hunting the Adks but the lack of deer had me switch to the Catskills. At least I would see deer if not take any. The other point I will make is that buying something with a camp or residence is so much cheaper. If you look carefully you can find a foreclosure at the same price as vacant land. Now you may have to fix it but you will know what the taxes are and you will save yourself the nightmare of dealing with the codes and nonsense the Building Department will put you through. There have been posts on here about guys who built a structure and were then told the ceiling will not fit the amount of insulation required unless he uses spray in at three times the cost. A friend did an extension in Maine and they told him he was the last 8 ft basement they approved all new permits only allow a 5 ft frost wall so now usable basements are illegal. Believe me you don't want to get started on septic systems. Just my opinion after trying to build on a piece of land I own and found the foreclosure way much better. If you can find something adjacent state land or any other type that will not be developed, hopefully that you can hunt on but food plots can draw deer in and the privacy is worth it even if you can't hunt it. Good luck.
  13. It looks like you did well with or without a house. Congrats and good luck with the house and deer.
  14. Sorry to hear of your loss
  15. The outside can be handled as above, I would be more interested in the inside. Does it have fire brick lining? Is it supposed to? Not impossible if needed but will probably warp if it's missing.
  16. Thanks for the info Zem. I will ck them out
  17. Interested in an apple picking farm near Bainbridge and when I say near I use it loosely. Other fruits such as blueberries also ok. Thanks
  18. I can give you a better deal; join a club. Not on LI but upstate with land. I have been in several as I moved but all were great. Good people, good hunting. A lot cheaper too. If you hurry you can still join in time for this season. Good luck.
  19. Thanks for the heads up about Cabelas Field Archer I just ordered mine. Can't wait for it to get here and shoot it.
  20. That's a beauty. Many safe seasons to you and your Dad.
