  1. That's a beauty. Congrats.
  2. Trying to decide between the 870 20ga with 26in mod barrel or my fine Stoeger OU also in 20ga. slightly shorter barrels but with interchageable chokes so I could go full and full or mod and full. Leaning towards the OA due to the choke situation. Only other factor is shells. I think the 870 will take 3" but the OA takes 2 3/4. Thoughts?
  3. I just checked , It'a an Orvis endorsed lodge called the West Branch Lodge. It's listed as Hancock but I seem to remember it as closer to Deposit Anyway their number is 800-201-2557 or 607-467-5526. Good Luck
  4. I believe ther is an Orvis lodge right on the river after the Deposit exit.
  5. Congrats, it's a beauty.
  6. BK I believe there is a tax program with the state for forestry. I think it has to be more than 50 acres. I would guess there are members on here more familiar than I am. The only issue is they send a forester who tells you what and when to cut and you pay tax based on that, There are other advantages to the land being a tree farm versus hobby land. Investment write offs and I think farm vehicles are tax free. I would imagine you could also seperate an acre to build a hunting lodge. Naturally if you decided to put in a pond and stock it that too would be an investment. It's more of a matter of having the money to invest and the income tax burden high enough to appreciate the deductions. If you're looking at 147 acres I'm guessing you are there. Good luck.
  7. I thought if it was a farm vehicle it was exempt from sales tax.
  8. I saw a gun show that advised against wearing those vests made for concealed carry. The ones with the holster pocket built in. They said bad guys know what they are and assume those wearing them to be law enforcement. The guys on the show called them "shoot me first vests". My wife actually bought me one and I returned it. Hope it was an innocent mistake lol.
  9. Tell her about the second ammendment.
  10. The towns I mentioned are up Rte 8 from Deposit about 15 miles. It's on the border of Chenango, Otsego and Deleware counties. I might not make the final cut but maybe some of you can benefit. Good luck.
  11. Dominic - Good to talk with you this morning! I'm pasting below a little blurb about the show - feel free to share it with anyone you'd like. I'll keep an eye out for more submissions from your area, and I hope we'll be in touch again soon. -Brooke "Building Wild" is a fun, rugged new cabin-building series currently airing on National Geographic Channel Tuesdays at 9pm. The series features Paul DiMeo of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Hoosick Falls, NY native Pat "Tuffy" Bakatis. NOW, the series is looking for new build challenges in the YOUR area! In each episode of the show, Paulie and Tuffy - The Cabin Kings - meet a client who has a big, rugged piece of land and a dream of putting a cabin on that property. The Cabin Kings get it done in one week's time. If you have wild, remote acreage that would be a challenge to our crew, and a dream of your own wilderness getaway, we'd love to hear about it! Find more details here: http://www.cabin-kings.com/apply.php !
  12. I'll post the link as soon as I can.
  13. The show "Building Wild" on the National Geographic Channel is considering me for a show which will entail building me a cabin for about $10k. It is basically a freebie but you have to supply some labor and that amount. Problem is they don't have enough applications for my area, Central New York. I'm in Guilford near Sidney but anything in the area will be considered because they like to do a series of builds in one area. So if you have a piece of vacant land and never got to build your own please submit an application. They have links on their website so please send in an application. Maybe some of us can get a break.
  14. Listen to tda, what you desribed is how explosions take place. Enough flame to open the gas valve but not enough to light gas, Oh it will light eventualy.
  15. Well, if you are snowed in you don't have to worry about water and I would think survival hunting kicks in.
  16. Please double check my info but I am in the process myself. First boil at low simmer until you can remove the hair with a knife. I advise outside if possible on bar b q or camp stove cause it does smell. Next soak in bleach or hydrogen peroxide. First one I used bleach, this time I went with peroxide, regular store bought stuff for six hours. Then rinse off and check all material is gone except bone. If not may need more time in soak. Be careful with bleach to only soak skull cap as it will bleach antlers white if contact occurs. Same but less severe with peroxide. Allow to dry completely and mount. Be careful first time for a small deer I got a decent plaque. This time I ordered from cabelas a larger size and they sent plastic crap which I will be sending back. I got a nice wood plaque off the net and will use that. Good luck.
  17. I sometimes read these outrageous posts and wonder if we are being baited. How many ignorant hunters will agree with or at least condone not reporting the violators.
