Lever action

All 3 of mine this year I took out of a ladder stand.

I saw a copperhead a few years ago on our property.I'm more afraid of ticks than I am snakes.

If I shoot a deer early in the day I will field dress the deer 1st , then drag the deer to my stand and continue hunting.

Well I did it! I got the 10 point , not the one I had on camera but I couldn't be happier! At 4:00 For some reason I turned and looked behind me just in time to see a deer walk through an open space between 2 pines about a 150 yds away.I kept watching and another deer crossed.So I turned around and watched that direction hoping they work their way to me.About 10 mins later I see a big doe working her way to me and not far behind is the buck.I see he had a rack but I had no idea how big.So I took the shot while he was quartering towards me.I hit him at the base of the neck and it exited behind his right shoulder.He only ran about 20yds.I couldn't believe it when I walked up to him. then I had the long task of dragging him out.Thank God there was snow on the ground.When I got to the main highway and had cell service I called the wife and told her to have the grand kids at the house, especially our 9 yr old grandson who helped me put up the ladder stand.I owe him a big thank you.

Forgot my bottle of green tea, that was it.When I got home I put one in my back pack so I will have one today.

I didn't have to wait long for action this opening morning.At 6:45 I was watching the area behind my ladder stand expecting the deer to be coming from that direction when I heard something behind me.I turned and looked and there was a buck standing 25 yds away.I tried to reach for my rifle but with it being so cold this morning my ladder stand creaked and he was gone in a flash.An hour later I see 3 deer coming through the trees. When they got closer I see they were all does, so I shot the lead doe when she offered me a clear shot at 40 yds,I hit her right in the shoulder and she only ran 20yds.I dressed her out and dragged her to my stand and sat for another 5 hrs, saw another doe but that was all.I don't think I heard more than 20 shots in all that time and only one was close. I'm going to go back out in the morning with the hopes of seeing the 10 point.

The weatherman says 14 for a low at our house, but where I hunt the temp is always 4 degrees colder, so I'm looking at 10 degrees in the morning. No matter what it's going to be cold.Today was a great day to be in the woods , I was able to sit all day without much trouble.I also saw the big buck I'm after, unfortunately he was about 60 yds away, but at least I know he is still around and tomorrow is another day.Good luck everyone and be safe!

Opening day I'd like to hold out for the 10 point I had on camera but if a small rack buck with a big body comes along I'll probably take him, especially if I'm cold and tired.Any big doe is going down.Meat in freezer is top priority!

Still trying to bag a buck with my crossbow but with the very cold temps we've been having the last couple of days I haven't been able to sit in the stand all day like I was hoping to do.15 degrees out right now..But I definitely will be on stand all day Saturday if need be.I will be hunting the same area I have been hunting with a crossbow.I have a ladder stand watching the edge of a hemlock swamp that I will use for rifle season.I have pics of a 10 pointer from earlier this fall.I'm hoping he is still around.

I dress in layers and wear boot blankets and never had a problem with my feet getting cold.

While walking to my tree stand this morning I really had my doubts at seeing any deer due to the amount of coyote tracks in the snow but at 10:10 2 doe came trotting underneath my tree stand from behind. I had to react quick and gave a couple of bleats to stop them.I took the lead doe, she was quartering away and I hit her far back on the left side and the bolt exited the right shoulder. She didn't go far.Now I can relax and concentrate on a buck, hopefully the 10 point is still around.I have the whole week off to hunt so maybe I can get a chance to see him.

Got in my stand Saturday morning at 7:45.Sat there all day and didn't see one deer and was wondering why .Then at 6pm a pack of coyotes started howling and yipping about a 100 yds from me.Then another pack started carrying on between my stand and where I park my truck.I thought I better get out of here while it's still daylight.Went back Sunday am and was on stand before daylight.Again the coyotes were howling everywhere and again no deer to be seen all day which was very discouraging. I had over 100 pics of deer from my 2 trail cameras back in early Oct.Several does , a couple of small bucks and a beautiful 10 point but now I can't even find a track of a deer.Anyways I got on stand this morning and just as it was getting light enough to see I thought I would try rattling .So I rattled for a couple of minutes and after a couple minutes I heard something coming.I thought all right about time I see a deer! But it wasn't a deer it was a coyote and it came within 15yds but it didn't give me enough time for a shot.So I continued to sit in the stand and 2 hrs later I heard something walking behind me .I looked and it was another dang coyote.I watched him for a few minutes and he gave me broadside shot at 35 yds .I didn't know that I hit him until I climbed down and went over where he was.There was blood everywhere, so I started following the blood trail and couldn't believe how far he ran before he expired.At least a hundred yds and I hit him right behind the shoulder.

I haven't seen a deer in 3 days ,this is 1 of the reasons why. 35 yd shot.

Can't wait! Washing the hunting clothes this weekend and getting the excalibur crossbow out to shoot to make sure everything is good!

Well I guess there's only one way to find out, but I'm just excited knowing he's out there.

Checked my cameras today( they have been out in the woods over a month)and this is what I had along with some small bucks and a lot of does.

Yeah, our state is moving forward, we can kill unborn babies up to nine months now but we can't declaw our cats.Gotta love NY. We won't have a cat in our house with claws.We had our cat declawed about 3 months ago.She came home the next morning and was just fine.Don't know what the big deal is.
