Recommend a replacement rangefinder
moog5050 replied to moog5050's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Plus, for bow, unless its a really steep hill, I haven't noticed much difference for the distances I shoot. If its that steep, just aim a bit low. My last RF didn't have ARC and I was still able to kill deer. -
Recommend a replacement rangefinder
moog5050 replied to moog5050's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Its funny how the RFs for golf tend to cost more than the ones marketed to hunters. Golfers must have more money or hunters are cheaper. lol. Thanks, really leaning towards the Bushnell. Doesn't have angle compensation, but not really sure that's needed. -
My redfield ranger bit the dust (not sure why but very inconsistent readings even at short distances and yes I cleaned it and changed the battery). So I need a replacement. Looking to spend less than $150. Thinking about the Bushnell Bone Collector RF for $135 on amazon. I like that it uses a 9v, has good optics, purportedly good low light readings and is rainproof. I am not very concerned about accuracy beyond 400yds as I never shoot that far. I use this mostly for archery. Thoughts? The Halos are all cheap, but not sure I like the brand.

arrows spraying horizontally is usually alignment and vertically its usually inconsistent anchor. As DB mentioned, you could be peeking (dropping your bow arm) on some shots.

We have officially hit that "I won't open this thread again" point. lol

LOL - Biz I think the term stalk suggests that you are sneaking up on the animal. Perhaps walked up and killed it is more accurate. Kinda like, I stalked up on the slug or snail and killed it.

Three calibers for the world
moog5050 replied to Borngeechee's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I guess its rifles only and based on our current inventory: .22, 30-30 and .308. The only other rifle I own is a .270. -

.22, shotgun, 30-06 (if I had one) or .308 if I have to select from what I already have. -
CZ 452 American is the only rimfire I own. Its accurate but not used much.

I have seen you shoot your compound Eddie. I don't think you will need that crossbow for quite some time, if ever. Looked to darn easy for you.

Enjoy Augusta!

How is this for twisted logic, I would actually prefer some hunters to use a crossbow in archery season. I shoot my recurve at least 5 days a week to remain sufficiently proficient to hunt with it. I suspect I could shoot a crossbow 5 times per year and be sufficiently proficient to hunt with it, but I like the challenge of the recurve. For me, a compound falls somewhere in between those levels of practice. Not everyone has the time for, or desires that extra level of challenge in hunting. Do I want the guy who hasn't spent much time preparing to hunt with a bow to hunt with it? Nope. Do I want the hunter to have to sit out that part of the season? Not really. I would rather see the hunter who doesn't have the time or desire to dedicate to being proficient with a more difficult weapon use the easier weapon. Less wounded deer and more people included in this wonderful pastime. I think all agree its harder to kill a deer with a recurve/longbow than compound and harder with a compound than crossbow. Who cares. As long as you are proficient with the weapon you choose, go hunt. The only reason I would even oppose guns in archery season is because they make too much noise. One day I may decide I don't have the time to dedicate to remaining proficient with a bow and the crossbow may keep me in the game. Until then, all of your crossbow hunters, please leave the big bucks for me. lol

I like them in bow to range trees around me when I sit - I can only remember once ranging an actual deer. Unfortunately my redfield ranger just bit the dust. I need another.

Wont change how I hunt a bit and seriously doubt it will impact my hunting by others using crossbows.

I am sorry that you are now officially 1 year older. Have a great B-Day!

I think x-bow should have full inclusion but x-bow hunters should not be allowed to shoot at any bucks bigger than a spike. Isn't that what those that want them excluded are really worried about? Its a nice compromise. lol Oh, by the way, since I plan to hunt only with my barebow recurve in 2016, all compound hunters should be all excluded too - or limited to spikes. lol Wait till I am proficient with the Atlatl. No one will be allowed to hunt.

My daughter started with a longbow at 6yrs old and still shoots it at 7, but I did also get a kids compound. She shoots both now. You can get away with poor technique and shoot a compound pretty darn good. Much tougher to do with a trad bow. Thus, I am hoping she will become proficient with the longbow and then she can use whatever she wants. At age 7, she knows what the term "expansion" means in terms of releasing a trad bow. I suspect many compound only guys would not be familiar with the term even though back tension is still a proper component of compound shooting. I can tell you that I have learned more about shooting a bow well in my trad pursuits than I did when I only shot compound.

I hope you invested in windex and enjoy using it (or your wife does). With 2 kids (and dog and cats), that would be a full time job trying to keep the mirrored tables smudge free. lol

Hey I am in good company. Did the same thing when installing my own disposal a few years ago. Who needs to read directions? My first thought was, great I replace the disposal and now the dishwasher is on the fritz. Ha.

As for a job, beyond cutting lawns as a teenager, my first real job was when I was a senior in high school. Cant remember whether it was security at the war memorial (now blue cross arena) or a night club bouncer but started doing both around the same time and was paid $8/hr. Pretty good money back then for a teenager.
