They hunt hogs with them down south. I am sure they would kill a deer at appropriate distances.

New to Forum / New to Hunting (WMUs - 4s, mostly)

Welcome! There are a few of us around that don't come from families with a hunting tradition. Way to start it yourself. -
The kids ate them raw, but more so to see our reaction I think. The grubs were not nearly as bad as the "fruit drink" they drank or the river water they drank without cleaning. I would have been sick for months if I tried that.

Wow Grow, lots of work. I am sure your family appreciates it. Have a Merry Christmas!

Describe the techniques you used to attract deer this 2015 season
moog5050 replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
Grunting worked for me this year to call in my bow buck. I even had to use the snort wheeze when he wasn't willing to commit. Only worked when I saw him out of range heading the wrong direction at a trot. Blind calls did not seem to produce much. I didn't use any scents and rattling was not productive. -
Cant be that bad. I once ate these while on a trip to a remote village on the Urocoa in Venezuela. I didn't have the courage to eat them raw, but cooked, they really weren't bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw0JNAArrRA

He has some of you brain washed. It is Colombia.

Its addictive Geno, be careful.

I shoot the longer bows better for sure, but I am pretty decent with the little KM and I really like its maneuverability in the stand. It was a bit more awkward shooting a 60" bow from the stand, but doable. I think 58" will be a reasonable compromise between maneuverability and forgiveness. Bear makes a good production bow. Good luck with the new one.

Sounds like a good season. It always drives me nuts how I select the wrong property or stand. Once of the reasons I both like and don't like trail cams.

He is on empire just before the Bay. Bob Alaimo. Been around a long time.

Law The bow is being made by Don Doan of Doan Archery in CA. I had the chance to shoot one and to say I was impressed is an understatement. He is not a big name but is a meticulous craftsman and great to work with. Very attentive and responsive. It took a lot of photos just to select the veneers for the limbs. He wants to make the buyer thrilled. The limbs are going in the press tomorrow. It is a 58" amo TD with 60 and 52lb limbs. I had it for a few days (with only 60lb limbs) and wanted a slight adjustment to the grip and sent it back. It is extremely hard hitting but still quiet. It was also very accurate for me. Really like it. I asked him to make the 52lb limbs while he had the riser so I have a choice. This may be my primary recurve for many years so I wanted a relatively light set of limbs. I will post some pics when it arrives again. I have owned a few bigger named bows, black widow, big Jim's, das dalaa, but this was the nicest I have ever shot. I was shooting fmj 340s with it but I am sure I will be playing with arrow selection. I like carbon though and heavy tip weight so my spine is typically pretty stout for the poundage I shoot. Forgot to add, the riser is walnut and sapele, the 60lb limbs are cocabola with burl walnut over a maple core, for the 52lb limbs he had some really unique flitches of ziricote and we are splicing with them with birds eye maple. It should be unique when it's done. Skillet I will ask him if he is interested in selling. It was an older Herters bow, 50lbs. AMO was not printed on the bow but it looked like a 60" to me. If you are just starting, 50 May be a bit heavy. It was in nice condition. Black glass on belly and tan glass on back with a nice dark wood riser. That said, most people just starting are better of with a 30ish lber until form is perfected.

This was my first year with the recurve and I was 2 for 2 on does but did go with the compound once the opportunity to kill a buck arrived. I did enjoy the challenge and am seriously considering retiring the compound. The buck I killed was at 32yds and that was darn close to my max range with the recurve. So it would have been a tough decision on whether to shoot. But there a certain satisfaction of successfully killing one with a stick, string and arrow - nothing more. Plan to shoot ALOT!

Well, I stopped by his shop but didn't leave with the bow. He didn't realize it was a lefty. Lol. It was nice of him to think of me. I told him to keep it in the collection since I can't shoot lefty. I have a custom being built so I will have a new recurve in the woods next year. There is something special about shooting the old bows though, even if they don't have the performance of today's recurves. I have a sneaky suspicion that the old KM will be back for an encore next year, maybe even introduce it to a buck.

Awesome gun. I put a boyds thumbhole on mine. They are excellent slug guns and shoot great with the accutips. Someone will be very happy with this gun.

So my barber collects guns and older bows but never hunts. Before last season, he gave me an early 70s Kodiak magnum to start with traditional archery. I promised him I would do my best to kill a deer with it and sure enough, I was fortunate enough to do so. He was so happy that one of his bows was being used again and told me he never thought I would actually kill a deer with it. He just called me and said he has a Christmas gift for me. Another bow. He didn't give details, but I am sure it is another old recurve. Should be fun to try to use it to get him a deer next season. Excited to see what it is. Hopefully its not too long as I have grown quite fond of that short bow.

My rage hypos did well as usual. I was not thrilled with the penetration of the Strickland helix from either of my recurves. They both did the job, but no pass through. I will be looking at these in the off season as I really hope to hunt all of archery next year with the stick bow.

Law Be sure to BH tune. I had a hard time with 2 packages of viper tricks. They didn't spin or fly true. I chased my tail for a while until I learned it was the head. This was 2 years ago. The standards flew great by contrast. It could have just been a bad batch.

Great offer.

Don't know that I would want to plant clover abutting my law. That said, it would be a good option if you aren't worried about it taking over the lawn.

My bore sighting consists of removing the bolt and lining up the barrel with a target at 25 yds and then putting the crosshairs in the middle. I then head to the range to get sighted in at 50 and then usually 100. Trust me, I would not want to hunt with any gun I just bore sighted and I do not agree at all that it is similar to actually sighting in a gun at 50yds. Of course, I don't have a special tool for bore sighting. My bore sighting never yields great accuracy at 50 but it is usually on paper. Maybe if you bore sighted it would be fine. I am not claiming to be the world's greatest rifleman (and that's not a shot at you as I am sure you are very good at it and appreciate your service), but I know enough to know that any gun properly sighted in at 47 yds will kill a deer at 75. Heck, the farthest shot I have ever taken to kill a deer was around 240 and that seemed like a long shot for me, especially with a fixed 4x scope. I am no sniper, that's for sure.
-
Not arguing either. You could be right. I can't speak to how well the gun was sighted in. My only point was that any gun sighted in properly at 47 will kill a deer at 75yds - all assuming good shots.
-
I understand, but even stretching it like you have (who is going to be off 2" on a 47yd zero?), he could kill a deer at 75yds. I see little risk in zeroing at 47yds and taking a shot at 75yds. The first year I bought my encore, I zeroed 1" high at 50 and killed a doe around 90yds with a heart shot. I really don't think it was unethical at all to take that shot. Before the next season I sighted it again at 100yd and didn't have to move it. Would it have been better if I had the time to zero at 100 before season 1 - YES. Was it critical knowing that my shots would be inside of 100yds. Nope. To each his own, but you would really have to stretch the limits of error to demonstrate how a 47yd zero with any gun is going to be more than 4-5" off at 75yds. Your scenario suggest he can't properly sight the gun at zero. That's a big assumption.

You will be an old pro on the coyotes in no time. I may ask to take you up on your offer to learn the ropes at some point. Good luck. Look forward to photos.
