  1. a good shot isn't someone who busts nocks on their backyard target they've always shot at from the same spot. a good shot is someone who can pick their bow up at the beginning of the season and shoot well from the start. that person can make the shot happen in a position or situation that isn't considered routine. they can keep their sh*t together under pressure. could be on a 3D course with friends cracking jokes or making gestures at while they're at full draw. could be out hunting when that deer did something unexpected. can't get this way without practice, but results on a 3D course or in the woods trumps practice results any day of the week.
  2. are property holds a lot of doe. typically don't see early season bucks. once the rut kicks in it's a different story. haven't seen a buck big enough and old enough yet. also only can get out 9.5 hrs so far. i'm a busy guy.
  3. Ok makes even more sense. I stopped watching longer ago than that. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  4. Hard to tell from those types of shots but neck seems deeper down low with bulk right up to base of head. Plus antlers seem more developed and have more mass. If you had a trail cam pic with whole body, pictures of lower jawbone, or had teeth sent in you could know more or maybe an age. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  5. Midwest whitetail was like that but grew into something with a ton of sponsors. I honestly dont follow the hunting public though. Just dont have time it seems with everything going on. When the they still had ties to MWW show they had a NY crew from WNY that was on. Wouldn't surprise me if they talk. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  6. i was going to make some twisted joke about you "using" an intern but in all honesty can't trash an intern. hunting public guys were all interns for bill winke (midwest whitetail) at one point.
  7. you better add in administration acquiring a better publicist.
  8. I've been really close to deer while on the ground to the point where i can't move and i'm worried about getting run over or kicked in the head or somewhere else when they finally do bust me. deer aren't ocean dwelling creatures that sense living things with electro-reception. any lesser degree of woodsmanship is going to offset that suit saving your ass by lot. there's theory based "it can't hurt to use it" and then there's practicality.
  9. i think the Upper Hudson River Valley typically splits it. $500 of the $1K stays for local support in similar manner. we don't have any VDC processors around here. another group that does this locally is the agricultural stewardship association (ASA).
  10. takes even more work giving hunters a reason to let him have a reason to be there. hope you get an opportunity and get to post up a field photo holding it up.
  11. the first picture seems like a younger deer but i do know when a deer is quartering away it's rack looks quite a bit smaller in pictures. unless the original picture is from earlier in the season that buck is definitely not 3.5+ yrs old. it's just a thinner, under developed deer. has lanky legs. plus it'd have more tarsal staining. either bucks is still very respectable though. it's a personal choice. I've seen where bucks with the same antler characteristics are in the same area but ones older. i shot a buck that was younger of the two thinking it was the older one, both were 8 pointers with a sticker point of their left base, and tipped in browtines. you'll know i guess if you get a pictures again. congrats on a great buck.
  12. Watching meat eater while enjoying this. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  13. This ones been hanging around this spot but hoping the previous generation comes around to give him the boot. Bad picture I know. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  14. Had to let it cool down twice to type this. Had some doe and fawns come in hitting acorns. Took me 15 minutes with climber to get settled but had doe within 60 yards bedded. Timed myself with phone too. Went to f'in finish typing though and had two ticks crawling up my hand! Uneasy but sitting a bit longer. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  15. Was almost live from woods. Had range day today with Field to Fork program. Then mid afternoon that ended. Helped a bowhunter on the host's property track a doe he shot this morning. Hit slightly low and back he thought so he backed out. 6.5 hours later was when we started tracking. The 3 of us tracked but blood trail wasnt great. Seemed like he hit a lobe low on the liver with no lung then out through hide by the stomach. Small amounts of blood didnt seem too fresh so we weren't pushing it. Never bedded but stopped several times. Lost blood around 400 yards then checked further down a trail I thought itd take along a hedge row. picked it up again heading out through a field into a thick narrow creek bottom. We picked up more down in the bottom ditch but still fairly dry and then lost blood again. Just shy of 1,000 yards now. Host followed the ditch further out to a road where it changes landowners again. We called it now four properties deep. Hunter pretty bummed out but will bounce back I'm thinking. Too late to get out there so working on the garage. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  16. You disagree yet just proved my point. You think north central PA is a "waste land" for bucks yet PA WMU 3A that spans the whole border south of you still take almost 4 bucks per square mile. That's more than practically any WMU in NY's region 4 where Mowin (whom I replied to) and I are. In NY it's even better in Stuben county just east you, and to the north you is good too. I think you should just except how well you have it. lol Hope you get a crack at one of those bucks this fall. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  17. late night at the office. now i want chinese.
  18. one not far from PA with antler restrictions or Stuben county. Definitely not in Eastern NY. Many of those bucks have age though and it shows.
  19. Seemed like a lot of coordination for a picture of two beer glasses. lol Forgot to post this from last night. It was delicious. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  20. we saw a lot of bucks. back then we didn't promote QDM as much so age structure was a quite a bit younger. with more bucks though it seems like it helped get a little more that hit the genetic lottery for antlers. wasn't sustainable though with food they had available, plus we didn't try at all to take much for doe. we saw antler growth for a given age take a dive it seemed like with fewer bucks but tons of doe. seemed like every buck was a "scrub". slowly turning around with what we're doing now, but with less deer. better age structure for bucks and overall bigger antlers, but with fewer bucks it seems like we have less that are a golden goose when it comes to antlers. hoping you can follow what i'm saying.
  21. i think that was the case all over. ton of deer near the eastern border here back then too. saw an educational slideshow that said late '90s to early 2000's the whitetail population across the nation was comparable to the highest it's ever been.
  22. i just stick to the food processing nitrile gloves. those arm length ones are slippery as all hell to use getting the guts out. We have Hoffman's Car Wash chain locations here. Went there to clean out the back of the truck from taking deer over the weekend. First pass didn't get a lot of it. Pulled up again and stated the situation. Manager came out, asked what i got for deer, gave me a congrats, then jumped in the back himself with a pressure wand. By the time it was done it was spotless. Owner Tom Hoffman is big into hunting and completed the superslam with a bow. many more sheep too. Always worries me though i'm going to catch hell with being here around city of Albany/the capital.
  23. bleeding has to stop first and get it closed up. then that stuff is great. burns a bit at first.
  24. the real take away here is when you're going to catch yourself shaking out your camo right before you put it on, while cursing at yourself under your own breath? lol
  25. i used to rock Huggies but now it's Scott Naturals Flushable wipes. lol
