  1. I'm going to take a day off this week and try again this weekend if we don't get hammered with lake effect snow. God I hope not, not ready for that crap. It's been a frustrating year for us. We are on new property and didn't get in until September, it's been a tough go, lots of deer on cameras but haven't seen a nice buck while on stand other than a decent 8 at 70 yards in October. Tons of does though, so hopefully another one is going in the freezer on Saturday.
  2. This year I went with the new Winchester Deer Season XP 150 grain because they are incredibly accurate in my rifle. Opening weekend I shot a doe at 85 yards. At the shot she kicked up her rear and staggered off, I knew the shot was good. After 15 minutes I climbed down and took a look. There was snow on the ground and only one very small drop of blood at the site of the shot, no blood trail in the snow whatsoever. When I found it 50 yards away it was still alive and had to be finished off. This is the "exit" wound, (front leg removed). "Exit" is a bit misleading. There was no break in the off side hide at all. This damage was all under the hide and destroyed a ton of meat on both sides, I could fit my fist and forearm through that hole. These are very accurate in my Browning, but I won't be using them again.
  3. Jay, you are in East Otto I believe, WEAR ORANGE! 270 is about as perfect a deer gun as there is. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Once when I was 16 or 17 I was deer hunting in Allegheny County, PA and I decided to take some shot shells with me because there were squirrels everywhere. Why not, right?. After a couple of hours I got bored, ejected my slug and put in the #6. I'm ready to shoot a big squirrel and BOOM, a shot rings out about a hundred yards from me and a true giant of a buck came running up the hill right toward me. I fumbled with the shells, dropping them everywhere, desperately trying to get a slug back in the gun I jammed the action. The buck stopped 15 yards in front of me and I could do nothing. Never again!
  5. East Otto will be a circus on Saturday. Even going in deep it will be very crowded, I hunted there for years and had access to property that bordered the state land. Nice deer are taken every year there though, interestingly enough...usually near the road on Traffic St. I would recommend hunting the private land on Saturday if you can. As most state land, East Otto cools off after Thanksgiving weekend. If you want, shoot me a PM and I will let you know where I have had success there in the past. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. My son had a similar experience last year. After the shot he texted me, 25 yard broadside shot, he thought the shot looked good, but he said there was virtually no penetration. We looked and looked but found no blood other than a few drops. After an hour or so of searching I found the arrow with head intact and bent at a near 90 degree angle. All blades were still attached, some blood and hair on the head, but not much. We figured he hit the shoulder bones. I have shot many deer with the Grim Reaper and have blown right through shoulders with them. I even recovered heads buried in the opposite shoulder joint that were in perfect condition. I swore they were the best mechs out there, but after seeing this we tossed them. He went to G5s and I am using Spitfires now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. No, I have a heart problem and an ICD implant. If that thing goes off at the wrong time, someone besides me could be hurt or killed. It's just not worth the risk with my wife on the back.
  8. Thanks. I loved that bike more than any other I have owned in the last 30 years, it was hard to give it up. And damn did I take a bath on it. Must have been the red! LOL!
  9. Yeah yeah yeah. I know, I know, black and chrome, like everyone else. Funny, but true story... The day I picked up that bike at Gowanda HD, my son drove me. He looked at it and said "Damn, that's really nice Dad, I really like the Maybelline Red. Is that rack for your purse?" I'm a fan of the Candy Red, not everyone is ... I actually had a harder time selling that bike because it WASN'T black. No upgrade, I can't ride any longer due to medical condition, just not worth the risk any more.
  10. The bike I was riding at the time and my first initial, I just carried it over from an HD site I was a member of. Sadly... it's long gone. Real name is Don
  11. I have been shooting Reapers for years and have been very happy with them, but have made the switch to Spitfires XXX this year just for a change.
  12. There is also the Buffalo Gun Center its 5 minutes from Cabela's in Cheektowaga and Gander Mountain is only 10 minutes from there in Tonawanda. There is a large Dick's store inside the Galleria Mall across from Cabela's
  13. I'm a big fan of Grim Reapers. Their new Carni-Four head is what I plan on using this year.
  14. I was just viewing a recent thread and noticed a replay by Deadhunter25 with MY avatar pic. After going to his page, I also noticed LAST VISITED indicated I view his page 33 minutes ago, which did not happen.
  15. 'nuf said. He can call himself a "conservationist" all he wants, he and his father are clearly brown and down, kill as much as you can, law breakers.
  16. Never heard of it. I'm going to grab one today, I can't imagine how many things I have tossed that could have easily been repaired with this tool. Great idea, thank you for posting!
  17. Ha! Well... that screen name started on a Harley site years ago when I rode a Fat Boy, now sadly it is becoming a nick name that fits me! No flip phone obviously. We have a photographer and a videographer on staff, so I grabbed them and we went out to take the shots and some footage.
  18. I came into work this morning to find a group of people in my office with their faces plastered against my window. It was a nice way to start the day, took a few shots before mom started working her way back.
  19. I experienced the same thing with my bow sight. I was ready to hang it up because the sight was just impossible for me to use, but last year I purchased progressive lenses and was really happy how well I could once again see the peep, the pin and the target. I do have to wear an eyeglass strap to pull the glasses tight when shooting the bow, otherwise I can't align the "sweet spot" in the lens when fully drawn, if the glasses move just a fraction of an inch it just doesn't work.
  20. I never saw a fisher until this past archery season. This guy and his mate came by me nearly every time I was in this stand. Really cool to see.
  21. Any chance it has DRC engraved on it?
  22. Right where WNYBH's diagram shows. I shoot directly above the front leg, center mass. They always drop right there.
  23. In the last hour of the last day of my bow hunting season this guy walked in with a doe at 25 yards, so I let an arrow fly. Unfortunately he broke his right beam off just beyond the brow tine, but he is a brute none the less.
  24. Move it. After a morning hunt a few weeks ago we moved a ladder stand. We hauled it in with a Ranger, banging and clanging the entire way. Three of us, goofing around and making all kinds of noise putting it up. That evening my son shot a deer from it.
