  1. Having one and remembering one of the few hunters I knew that had the same interests of hunting far off lands.... To all that have lost family and friends.
  2. I'm still falling. Started in 20's, self taught.
  3. I have some old style Winchester Silvertips you can have for the 270win if you want them. If nothing else you can load a few rounds and have them go bang without using what you decide on for hunting and get your feet wet.....although these are OK on deer, about the same as corelocs.
  4. Was poking around on their website; some nice looking stuff that has a top reputation. I think a takedown limb bow would be terrific to play with on a trip. You should tell them they have ibex and a tahr in the sheep category and they are in the family of goats, maybe get a discount. LOL
  5. 36" tree 60'+ high. End that hit maybe 16" still, fractured where the upper part forked. After it hit and I figured out what had happened, I'll admit it was a sobering experience about not thinking something through all that well.
  6. A couple years ago I thought it would be a good idea to use my skidsteer to knock down an old dead pine tree and roll the root ball out at the same time. Put the bucket up and got it rocking pretty good when the top half snapped off and it fell butt first . Good thing that has a plate steel roof, if it was an open tractor I wouldn't be here now. Needed a bottle jack to try and press the dent out and its still not perfect, frankly its a good reminder not to be stupid. I've known 2 homeowners killed by tree accidents; things can go wrong in a hurry.
  7. When in camp this past Oct. I extended an offer to a 74 year old fellow who had never shot a game animal before to come along on a walk and he got his first ever in Africa with my rifle. Was great fun, made a nice shot too! I think hes hooked. He's still racing cars and flying; so he needs a new hobby IMO.
  8. Anyone else find it ironic the owners last name is Hunter? Perfect for a place called "Antler".
  9. Huh; when did that happen? Didn't notice last time was browsing their site. Used a Razor series spotting scope of theirs for a week and was thoroughly impressed.
  10. I find that some of the poorest decisions I have made have to do with selling of guns.
  11. Lefty? There was a Browning guy by me who had a barrel action on his wall that came from salt stock; holy crap it was a mess below wood line.
  12. Frank Zitz, Rhinebeck And back on topic; I baked a ham for dinner, some potatoes and asparagus.
  13. Much of the African stuff at the time that Cabelas was being built was taken by many members of the Cabelas family and mounted here in the Hudson Valley. Then when they started to build more stores and the family sold the company; they bought out a taxidermy shop out west (Montana IIRC?) and have taken donations, and bought on the open market for decor.
  14. Much better decision over Hartford.......somewhere there is/was an Impala of mine floating around there as at the time a taxidermist I was using did most of the African mounts and needed a skin so I sold him mine.
  15. I haven't looked at any of the new Zastava's but I'm quite happy with the badged Whitworth and a NIB action I have sitting here for a project. Feeds even flat nose solids great. Just have to decide what to do with the other one; was thinking 8x68s as I have a blank barrel that would work that came as part of a package deal.
  16. If you load a 300 win mag with Blue Dot pistol powder, one must expect consequences. Both of mine have been flawless and have had quite a few chamberings from 22Hornet to 300RUM, although down to 9 or so now and a substantial number of rounds shot. I'd like an R8 in 458 Lott for next trip.
  17. Made by Zastava and marketed as the Remington 798. Zastava made contract guns for several manufacturers, my Whitworth 458 win mag is Zastava made.
  18. ; too many guns out there, and fun to have options. I might change mine and return to my Buffalo roots this being a NY forum and all....a Newton in 256 or 300 Newton designed his own actions with double set trigger, built in bases, multi lug bolt, featuring 2 designs of high velocity chamberings that smoked the competition and designed 40 years before Roy Weatherby decided to stop selling used cars and shill guns.....and all built in Buffalo for about the first 3000 units before WW1. I'd mention a 200/202 Sauer but not really being able to top load the magazine really puts hurt on what is the smoothest bolt action that I have ever worked; even better than the Jarrett.
  19. Blaser R93 followed closely by Jarrett Tri-lock.
  20. +1 Sounds like I'm running a kazoo.
  21. I was in my 20's for hunter ed, 40's in the bow class, and 50 when I took trapping..... There was always someone older and always a mixed class. Welcome aboard, lots of good folks here too.
  22. I think that day is coming, based both on things like this article and seeing whats happening here in NY in certain areas.
