Dang !

I also carry both binoc's and a bottle of water. I also sit all day. If I shoot something I'll field dress it, drink my bottle of water then start the drag. It's a while before I get that deer out on my long drag. Better to be hydrated than not. I'm sweating like a mofo by the time I'm to my car. More often than not i get a headache on the drive home anyhow from being partially dehydrated .

Wonder if i could trade a 8G for a 9F at town hall when system is fixed. Ideally only need 18G but got both Nov 1. -
Last year on Thanksgiving I shot a slob of a buck at 11 :30 with my shotgun.. 75 yards off rest, checked cheek weld, breathed. Not sure what happened.(wasn't buck fever) Think I hit a few inches too far forward. Deer went quarter of a mile, bedded down and bled some, another half mile and bedded down again. Snowmobilers were out and shouldn't have been and booted him across a field. 4.5 hours later I was still tracking him. He went miles and miles. Mind you it was 14 degrees out and I'm now saying screw walking around the shallow parts of the creek and boots were filled with water, I'm stripped down to a short sleeve shirt and orange vest, no hat, no gloves as there's 1.5 - 2 feet of snow on the ground.I had no water, no food and exhausted like I've never been before but kept going. Eventually lost daylight and the way he was hoofing it I almost was positive he'd make it. I returned and found a ton of coyote tracks and thought oh no. Followed their tracks for miles and never led me to him. I missed Thanksgiving dinner at my inlaws who already don't think I like them, my wife was so pi$$ed. I told her to ask her friends husbands who hunt what they'd do as I know their ethics are like mine. The same thing. I would have looked equally as hard for the deer had it been a doe, basket rack or this buck. I pulled the trigger it's my responsibility ! A couple days later his rub was hit fresh and it wasn't the day I shot him. Pretty comfortable to say he made it. I didn't eat from that day (Thursday) til Saturday as I was disgusted i wounded a deer. Didn't sleep that night as tired as I was. Moral of the story : IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO TO RECOVER ANY DEER YOU HIT !

IMO and I don't fall bird hunt much nor do my friends. Most i know don't pursue in the fall but will stick one with the bow if opportunity comes. Try and locate flock and bust them up if you can and try and call them back. I've never really hunted or heard of hunting water sources. Guessing your birds have that route on their daily routine. Birds typically don't like walking straight downhill . They'll zig zag taking all day if need be. I hunt deer but spring bird hunting is my love and passion. That's where its at compared to fall hunting. Listening to the woods wake up, new born fawns, migratory birds singing at o'dark thirty. When that first gobble rips off roost.....goosebumps ! For anyone who's never been spring bird hunting you need to ! But for fun tomorrow with my daughter off of school I'll throw my slate call in my pocket as we're going deer scouting and try and flog a duck or two. If i fire up ole tom I'll try and smash him. I don't personally shoot hens but that's just my choice, Good luck. The more you're out there the more you learn.

Jeesh folks, Daryll on The Walking Dead has no problems with his ! PS I still would like to see a .22 on this show considering it's the most popular caliber in the world. Haven't seen one yet !

I hunt for the freezer. This being said I'll pass on small doe , spikes, BB's and baskets as the $ to get deer processed isn't worth it to get processed $ vs pound. I'll shoot a decent buck that others will wait on to shoot a bigger one. Wife ,daughter and I will eat 2 deer a year but 3 would be ideal. I shoot 2 or 3 a year so we're content on what I'm doing.

you still talking about venison or your girlfriend!?

My 12 year old daughter will take her course this year. Has a Cricket .22, Ruger 10/.22 40th Anniversary and a Remington youth pink laminate 20 gauge in the safe. Her 20 gauge is all set up for turkey: Jellyhead tube, optics and a choke tube for slugs. Love the fact she's in ballet 6 nights a week and Clara in The Nutcracker this year but will put crawlers on the hook and take bass off the hook and appreciates bass thumb. Never once regret not having a boy. Healthy was all I asked for. Went spring bird hunting with me 3x last year and loved it. I even toted her pink gun. lol. Already asked to go with me deer hunting on Thanksgiving . Love her more than I ever knew I could love something. Can't wait til she can pull the trigger on a bird/deer. Dang good shot too

turkeyfeathers replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Deer Hunting
I'll repeat myself again: There's a bug in the system and some open areas were not showing up on the list of available DMP's. 9F for sure and some of the section 8's. From what is known it's a glitch and should be rectified soon -
my dad has a 30/40 Krag with peep sights from a loooong time ago. He used to hunt deer in Erie ,PA with it

Called Johnson's just now. Still a snafu. There's other WMU's not showing up as available too. Girl said they tried calling DEC with no answer. Keep calling but 9F is usually readily available after everything else gets claimed. Good luck. I made the mistake of grabbing 2 8G's . Wanted one 8G and one 9F. -
You also got boned this morning out of 9F ? I waited on round 2 for 9F as they are ALWAYS available. Not sure what happened as DEC site listed them as available !

No 9F What the hay !? Website listed as available and no go at Dicks. Even called Johnson's. Those are the last to ever go. Can't figure out why DEC website doesn't jive with computers. I love New York ! -
I use steaks or chops. Cut meat while still mostly frozen as it's more manageable into thin strips. I use the store bought jerky cure but i'll tweak it some with crushed red pepper, dash of worsteshire sauce, dab of hot sauce etc. Set oven to 180 with door ajar and cook for about 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs depending on thickness. I put it on a jerky rack to cook. Nobody can rival my venison jerky (patting myself on the back) My daughter actually cried when she was told she couldn't eat it after getting braces. She still does. I bought and used the jerky shooter with ground once. Absolutely horrid. We gave it to our dog as treats.
