What type of .30-06 ammunition to use for deer hunting?
covert replied to mossy725's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I have always preferred Federal ammo. I have taken deer with 180gr Federal H/E Nosler Partitions, 180gr Federal classic blue/grey box and Federal 150gr classic. The 180s dropped them in their tracks, but like everyone has said, whitetails don't really need a premium bullet. Now I have handloaded 150gr Hornady Interlocks so I might see how they work this year. I am not firm on what to carry this year though because I have a bunch of handloads that I want to try out. The .30-06 150gr Interlocks, .30-30 150gr Woodleigh Weldcores, .450 Marlin 250gr Barnes TSX and .45 Colt 250gr LRN! -
Now here's an "I wonder"; I wonder if/when they do allow crossbows in archery, will an archery class/license be required?

Possible record buck out of Raquette lake area

Speak for yourself...No, wait a minute, I think that came out wrong! -
Stormy Kromer has grey wool pants, made in USA for $139 on their website. They have a dealer list on there also. Never tried them but they look nice in the picture.

Yeah I don't want any tickets for that, that's why I always shoot the bears that are eating my birdseed! That way I can't get a ticket for letting them eat it. Unfortunately the DEC isn't going to have to prove you were hunting over bait, you are going to have to prove you weren't.

My rattle bag has odd shaped wooden dowels in it. Wonder if it sounds different than ones with plastic? It's never seemed to do anything regardless. I love to use my grunt. I've called in bucks and does calling blind and used it to stop and turn both also. I always feel like a goof using the bleat can because I've never had any luck at all with it. I've bleated at so many deer that don't even pay attention.

I thought the same thing when I saw the time, but just to play Devil's advocate it is possible that that's when the 911 call went out, or when someone finally looked at their watch in all the turmoil. The actual event could've happened earlier than 6:30.

I can top that, I got married on opening day of N/T rifle in 2003!

The judge has the ability to decide the severity of the infraction that prevents you from getting the permit. If your judge is a pro-gun judge he will lean towards giving them more easily, if he is anti-gun he can jam you up on something minor. Then what do you do? You get a lawyer ($$$$) and appeal the decision to... the judge. Even if they give it to you right away with no problems at all, "a license issued pursuant to section 400.01 of this article may be revoked and cancelled at any time by the licensing officer or any judge or justice of a court of record." (NYS Penal Code ss 400 pp 11)

Yeah they can. NY is not a Right-To-Carry State, it's up to the judge in your county. That's why some counties are harder to get one than others. If you're in Oneida County don't plan on getting an unrestricted permit, they say you have to prove you have a "need" for an unrestricted one.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html#Muzzleloading It's all right there in the syllabus. "The legal firearm for this season is a muzzleloading rifle or pistol (including smoothbore muzzleloaders) loaded through the muzzle, shooting a single projectile and having a bore of .44 inches or larger. Double-barreled muzzleloaders and percussion cap revolvers are not legal during the special muzzleloading season. If you hunt with a single-shot muzzleloading pistol, you must have a New York State Pistol License. Hunters shall not have in their possession, or be accompanied by a person who has in his or her possession, a bow or firearm other than the legal muzzleloading firearm."

I have seen pictures with the guy who shot it in them. It is a legit Madison County NY buck from opening weekend of bow. Two guys I work with know the hunter personally. I don't know the fellow so I don't think it's my place to put his pic up on the Interweb, but I trust the person who told/showed me about it.

NY DEC Adopts Deer Management Plan
covert replied to HuntingNY's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
That was something about bunny-huggers wanting them to sterilize the deer but the DEC knows that it won't do anything positive.- 16 replies

I haven't seen any anti-gun comments, just anti-dumbazz comments. And then landowners get called names for not wanting people on their land. All it takes is one encounter with some maroon to make them see all of us in a poor light.

The same thing that stops guys from using their DMPs wherever they feel like it; honesty. The ones who aren't willing to play by the rules probably aren't already so what's one more reg to them? Don't get me wrong, I do agree that it would be a lot simpler to go with a DMP-type tag. OT, anyone else get their bowhunter sighting log this year? Mine came on opening day of S/T. I thought that was funny.

Which farm was this again?

Try not to get discouraged. I started deer hunting in '94 and got my first deer in '01.

Nice! I've wanted one of those since I was a kid. I'm not even sure why; I guess the 7-30 Waters just always struck me as cool. I have a good load worked up for my S&W 25-5 in .45 Colt. I hope to get a crack at one this year. I missed a buck a few years ago with my Blackhawk .357 and ended up getting him three days later with my .30-06.

A sharp one. A dull blade will have more of an effect than the draw weight.

5H and 6P with probably one trip into 6S late.

I've seen a bunch of rubs this fall. A buck has a rubline that goes from an elderberry to another elderberry, a redbud, an apple, a mulberry, a cherry and another cherry right across my damn lawn. My wife is pizzed! This is after he rubbed one of her pears to death last year and hit the other one pretty hard. Come Saturday if I catch him out there while there's shooting light he's gonna' get it. Farthest one he's rubbed is within 35 yds of my porch.

What was the game doing in bluejeans and your father's coat? BUWAHAHAHAHA! That's what I wear too. (Johnson green wool that is, not G-Man's father's old coat)
