Well at least one head is not in the game. The other is in it too much! You'll be ok next season. She'll be just the girlfriend by then.
-
Good boy Jakey. So sorry John.
-
Oh boy.......here we go again. I'm out of this one. Said my piece in the other 20 or so crossbow threads. Have at it boys! I'll meet you all back at the barn. Will keep the beer cold.

So sad when they leave us. Each one, takes a piece of our heart with them when they go. So sorry.

So how many different ways are there to field dress a deer?
grampy replied to goosifer's topic in Deer Hunting
I use one small three inch blade knife. Cut around anus, push it in towards guts. Cut from anus, over the pelvic bone to bottom of the abdomen. Make small incision, insert two fingers from left hand, (right handed) using only the blade tip, facing up, cut to bottom of rib cage. Turn deer on side, start pulling out stomach-intestines, liver and spleen, while cutting the diaphragm from top side, pulling anus out too. Once contents are outside body cavity, cut the lower diaphragm still connecting and pull everything free. Reach up under rib cage until you feel the esophagus. (feels like a ribbed grunt call) Grab with left hand, bring blade with right hand facing away, follow along, turn blade, cut towards spine, then pull out lungs and heart. Turn deer body cavity down, back legs spread to drain. Done! Takes me about five minutes. And have done close to two hundred in 45 years. I hardly even get messy anymore. -
Sorry, but I just don't see how a hunter with a crossbow, or vertical bow, takes "a chance" away from another hunter.

It makes perfect sense for NYSDEC to handle the crossbow decision. But sadly, not too often do NYS lawmakers make sensible decisions. Let the DEC handle it. They know much more about it than big city politicians. Crossbow full inclusion, would have many older, and even some younger hunters, buying the tag to hunt that wouldn't otherwise. And anyone using a crossbow, should have to take the NYS Bowhunters Course.

Hunting has been tough this year for my hunting partner, after I shot my buck opening week. He has seen a few small bucks, but passed them hoping for something a bit bigger. I have been doing one man loops, through some very thick stuff trying to get one in front of him. Almost had a nice one go to him last weekend, but he circled me and went out the back door. So this morning I was back at it again. I'd walk till I found a good fresh track, set Gary up, then I'd circle around, trying to get the buck back to him. This was hard work, through heavy wet snow and very thick cover! I'm showing my age I guess, but it forced me to go slow! Exactly what needs to be done for this type of work. First two times today, I got close, to two different bucks! One, a very nice nine point I got to within 30 yards, before he jumped up! But I have no buck tag! And he went the opposite way I wanted him to go! Dang it!!! At this point I'm sweating, cut by thorns, breathing hard, and my feet are soaked! (broke through the ice in swamp). My lifelong friend and hunting partner said that's it, lets call it a day. I told him I cut a different fresh track while circling for the last one. Lets go one more time! Third time was the charm!!! Put the buck 30 yards in front of him!! Was never so happy to hear him shoot! Two happy, and sore friends tonight! We earned this one. Two hour drag to get him to a wheeler. Hope to do it again next week for my grandson!- 10374 replies

Leave the scents home. Sneak in and set up downwind of that trail. Find a blowdown or large tree to sit by. Bring lots of snacks for the young guy. Point out all the birds, squirrels, odd trees, cloud formations, anything to keep him occupied, to when the deer show up! When they do, don't be too picky! Good luck! Make it fun!

How many acres do you hunt if it is private land .
grampy replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
We have 600+ acres, between two properties. I'm property poor! It is a blessing and a curse, trying to figure out where to be, and when. We do alot of the zig and zag game. And we certainly are not over run with deer here. Like some locals think we are. -
Awesome work!!! As always. I think he's cool!

I have gained so much more, than I have ever given on this forum. Some great friends, and folks to share ideas with here. Have yet to meet someone from here I didn't like! ApexerER, you have done so well in the time you have hunted! From your own patience, persistence, and drive. See, you had all the tools necessary, to become a fine hunter all along! I'm with you! This place has made me a better hunter too!

My buddy has hunted on and off all this week, and has yet to even see a deer. Tough hunting in the Helderbergs area of 4-H right now.

Wishing you two gentlemen a Happy Birthday!!! All the best to you both....

turkeyfeathers 2018 Whitetail Classic Entry
grampy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
BAM!!!!! Just like that, you're on the board! Congratulations my friend. Well earned, and deserved! -
NYS Teachers Retirement. And yes, NC will tax my pension, but all tolled, will be paying thousands less in total taxes there. I will be able to stretch my retirement income much farther, with less taxes, and a lower cost of living. Looking at about 75 acres, with a small two bedroom home.
