  1. When it gets real cold, temps in the teens and lower, I will have 6 or 7 layers on, starting with the UA base. This time of year, I have an insulated Jacket that the sleeves can zipper off. So during bow season I have the sleeves off and wear it like a vest with a base layer and 2 or 3 sweat shirts under it. This layering allows me to stay warm in the morning and easily remove layers later when it warms up. And also keeps the bulk off my arms to be able to shoot my bow. Later when it gets real cold just zip on the sleeves. This was bought at Bass Pro Shops as part of a 3 piece jacket, vest, coat, and coat with over shell. It did cost more than $100 but it's versatility from early to late season, makes it worth the money spent. And I've had mine for a few years, it has held up nicely to the abuse I put it through.
  2. Right on! Not worth the risk of getting injured yourself! Especially if you have a sharp knife in your hand with a thrashing deer!
  3. I agree with this especially if you have a coyote population on the property. My partner hit a nice 8pt. on sat, half hour before legal shooting time ended. He said he thought the shot was good but it "sounded" funny. He went to the hit site and found the arrow, with evidence of a gut hit. So he backed out and we met up, deciding to let him go over night, based on what the arrow told us. We are both NYS lisenced deer trackers, so the next morning we got a young dog, and took up the trail. we found the deer a little over 75 yards away from the hit site. When he shot at the broadside deer at 20 yards the deer must have turned toward him, a bit at the shot, as the arrow went in behind the shoulder, took out the heart and one lung, clipped the other lung and exited the front part of the gut. the deer was dead before he even got out of his stand! But based on what that arrow told us, we did the right thing by letting him go overnight. And our coyote control must be working, as he was untouched!
  4. A few years ago, had a guy set up by my tree stand, he came from the state land that borders ours. We have the lines heavily posted with our names. So I walk up and say, you are on private land and the land owner would like you to leave! He tells me that >>>> >>>>>> is my buddy and gave me permission to be here. I looked him right in the eye and told him in a not so nice way, that I am >>>> >>>>>>, and I've never seen you before and to pack up and get off my property, NOW! I hate it when someone lies to my face! We have gotten a reputation for being rude to trespassers and having people ticketed, by having a couple close friends, who are state troopers hunting there. The only way to stem the tide of trespassers is to be not so nice, and to be on the property, a lot!
  5. Take his gift and bring some peanuts for him, the next time! I will bring some peanuts to my ground blinds as an offering for them to be quiet while I'm sitting there. Some will come right into the blind and take it while others just chatter right above my head!
  6. Great job and a hearty congratulations! Way to get it done! Some fine eats right there!

    Topo maps.

On both maps it looks like you have marked a gully or cut. Using the top one, on the bottom by the water, there should be a good pinch point for deer travel. I'd set up with the water to my back. And with a NE wind you should be good! just watch the thermals. On the 2nd map go to the top of the cut, as there is a bench at the top like moog pointed out. Deer will move around the top of the gully along the bench. So set up either on lip of the next bench, so you are looking down at the deer. Or on the same level, with the bank at your back. And again a NE wind will work there. Hope this makes sense and helps you. It is similar to to hill country Iv'e hunted most of my life. Wish you the very best of luck! Just come back if you have more questions, as there are many better hunters than I here.
  8. Congratulations on the doe from your new property! It will be the first of many deer taken there! My deepest condolences to your wife, you and family on the passing of your Mom in law. I'm certain that she will be watching over you all.
  9. You did a great job. Now she is too! Congrats to her!
  10. The deer will still be there when you are feeling better. Get well soon!

    Topo maps.

Along a hill or mountain, you will have water drainage going down the side. Over hundreds if not thousands of years, the water cuts a deep and steep sided cut or gully going down hill. The local deer tend to go around the very top and bottom where it is not so steep, to avoid the steepest and deepest parts in the middle. This creates a classic funnel as the deer are concentrated to a smaller travel corridor to get by the gully.

Also look for deep cuts or gullies on hillsides. As it will create deer travel pinch points at the top and bottom.

    Youth

If a local kid shot ANY deer that I was watching. I'd be the first one, to go over and congratulate them!
  14. Sure hope you are feeling better soon! Nice time to get some hunting in when you are up to it! I'd leave out the salted nuts with your cold beer, for a little while. Huge props for checking in 20 min. after recovery! Hope your healing is swift and as pain free as possible.
  15. HaHaHa, you got me on that one, smarty pants.
  16. I have to say after using it this past weekend, it has worked for me! I just marked trees with the Ever Calm, on my way in to my ground blinds. I saw on two different occasions where deer passed over my entry trail and calmly walked over it, without the quick stop and head up looking around. So far I haven't seen any bad reactions. One doe sniffed a couple trees with it on there and calmly went about feeding on acorns. So far so good with this product! And I am NOT a big scent guy.
  17. Got to say, the ratio between good people and scumbags is shrinking. And this sense of entitlement some people are displaying, has me just shaking my head.
  18. What a great read indeed! Something every hunter, young or seasoned, should read, before running off and getting the latest and greatest or the biggest and baddest rifle/cartridge combo. It all goes back to the "kiss" philosophy "Keep It Simple Shooting". thanks for sharing this!
  19. Heading out in a bit! My buddy got an 8 pt. Saturday evening and has been seeing bucks every sit. I sat with my grandson Saturday and myself yesterday afternoon and haven't seen a deer! All the while our trail cams are filled with deer, and a few decent bucks! Hoping to get some action this morning! Perfect conditions here, a little breeze from the NW and 40 degrees. Going back to the oak ridge blind. Good luck to all heading out. And keep safe.
  20. Happy Birthday! Hope you had an awesome day!
  21. Not mine, but my best friend and partner from the farm property. We let him go overnight not sure of the hit. Only went 75 yards, but we let the young dog gain more experience.
  22. Went out for my grandsons first deer hunt with his bow yesterday afternoon. He's only 12 so no gun yet. Went to an oak ridge where we have numerous buck sightings. Got in mid aftermoon to see fresh scrapes and rubs, all over! Wind was a bit swirley with the evening thermals. But we did not see a deer. He has two travel baseball games today. But we will hit the woods again tomorrow. On other side of property, my buddy hit one a bit back after an arrow deflection at 20 yards. Decided to wait until first light to find him. First time in more tha 15 years we have to use our dogs to track one of our own deer. We are Deer Search members. Good luck to all and keep safe!
  23. Congratulations! And nice shooting!
  24. Been in my easy chair since first light, reading these posts and still healing up. Sure wish I could be out there with ya's! I'm sending good thoughts and good luck to you all! Keep safe and get one down!
  25. Now that got me laughing! Bananas are good anywhere other than my boat! Good one!
