LIVE From The Woods 2021 Stories And Pictures Let's Have Em!

My Man!! Too many just wing shots, hoping for the best. I've seen it all while tracking for Deer Search. Enough can go wrong on a good shot opportunity, much less risking a poor one. If it ain't right, I ain't shooting. Would rather let them walk, than take an iffy shot ! Sometimes, just minutes, or seconds later, the deer will offer a much better shot? If not, perhaps another day. As hunters and sportsmen, we owe it to the game we hunt. To know our own limitations, and make that shot the best that we possibly can.- 9078 replies

For a 243 or anything in the 22 caliber range, there will be no recoil felt at all when using the Lead Sled. Just add a little weight to keep it stable. A good set of ear protection muff's will help her with the noise part. And having dad calmly and softly, talking her through everything, will have her shooting like a little trooper! Have fun out there!!

Love the Lead Sled!!! Even for smaller calibres. It just holds the rifle nicely for sighting in work. When I was younger, recoil never bothered me too much at all. We were in a shotgun only zone, and shot cases of one ounce slugs over the decades. The shoulder bruising was just an accepted part of rang time! And we didn't have much in the way of rifles, except old 30-30's and a couple 06's our fathers had. So we would shoot those occasionally too. I don't remember anything having a recoil pad, until my first Ithaca Deerslayer. Once rifles were made legal here in the early 2000's my wife gifted me a Savage Axis, in 7mm-08 for Christmas. That rifle changed everything for me! Just at the time my shoulders were getting bad. Hardly ANY recoil!! And DRT performance on deer! What could be better!! I did move up to a 270 with the same results. And that's what I use now. My point is, at this stage, I don't think I would enjoy much recoil at all. But you going down to a 160g bullet, along with the walnut stock. That should cut down considerably, the felt recoil of your beautiful TC 338. And make it much more enjoyable to shoot at the range. While hunting, not many even realize recoil at all during the moment of truth. So still hoping to see that rifle laying across a deer this fall!

Welcome! Pretty good group of hunters right here on this forum! Any questions you have, just ask away. -
Hopefully you can get a Z Pack or something to get over it? Might be a good idea to have another Covid test too? Regardless, hope ya feel better soon.

Years ago, that is exactly what I'd have done. But after downsizing, I just don't know where I would put a full body mount? He does have a decent rack for this neck of the woods. But he's only two years old. Pretty sure I will get a chance at him this year. Weather or not I decide to shoot him is still up in the air??? If I do, then I'll have to make a decision, on what to do? What would you guys do??? Sorry to hijack Cabin Fever's thread.

I remember that picture! Very cool! I don't really have room for a full body mount. I was thinking if I were to kill the piebald buck, I'd get the hide tanned too? IDK? Still not sure I would even choose to shoot him?

Wishing a fast and complete recovery for Luna. Hope to see her on a lead, soon after she's back to 100% After we moved to our forever home back in May, I feel your pain Tom! Tough to do in your 60's ! Hope it all goes smoothly as possible for you guys too.

Our piebald buck grew quite a bit since last year. This picture is from where I saw him all the time last season. Not sure if he makes the hit list? Depending on the day, he may or may not. He will definitely be killed if he leaves the property.

OK thanks. Went by there, and saw no activity last couple years? This is the place in South Berne right?
-
He closed a couple years ago.

Was he located in the old 'Greeneville Packing' building?? Across from where the Drive In used to be?

I love it!!! Nice work!! Those new mounts are awesome! Makes my man cave look a bit, shall we say,.......lacking????

Yup.....anybody except those cheating ASS'tro's! (wanted to use another word) Not even Biz predicted the Red Socks, to be in a position to win another ring this year! Good for them, the bunch of pesky over achievers! This is coming from a lifelong Yankee's fan................... it's good for baseball. Let's Go Sox!!!!!

Most all the work we needed to do up at the farm is done. Now I can start to focus on hunting!!! My nephew's first year bowhunting, so will take him over to the lake property this weekend. Good chance he can get a shot at something over there, for his first deer. He just got married a few weeks ago. Told him this stuff is addicting, his new bride will be made a "hunting widow" ! He just laughed, and said, that's ok, she's already used to being a "fishing widow"!!! lol....... Great hard working kid. At this stage, I much more enjoy being a mentor, than a hunter myself. His time will be limited though, with a new home to take care of, so I'll get to wear both hats.- 9078 replies

Marlow's. Just outside Cobleskill. Near Howe's Cave.

Lots of farmland in that area. Deer are well fed. An "average" three year old buck will be about 100 to 110 inches, and dress out 170lbs. Of course there are always BIG exceptions to the "average" rule. And some very nice big bucks are taken every season over that way. Cooperstown is about a 35 minute drive from where I hunt. And there are a lot of similarities. I know nothing about this guide service though.

I agree with phade. Get on him now, while you know he's close by! Sometimes, it pays to be a bit on the aggressive side. Two weeks from now he could be a mile or more away! Especially if he didn't see or smell you! Go get him! -
Hope ya feel better soon Rob. Glad it's not Rona, with any long lasting effects. Hopefully you'll be back to 'good to go' before your Adirondack vacation!!!

A pretty good buck for our area.
