Do any of you choose slug gun over rifle?
grampy replied to Billdogge's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I love my Deerslayer 2, and it has killed many deer in its day. But I love my rifle more! First year hunting with rifle for me. I like that it is so much lighter to carry, up and down these ridges. I like how it is lights out accurate from 20 to 200 yards or more. Not to mention, the recoil of a 7mm-08, is much easier on my bad shoulder. My granson will now get more time with the Ithaca than I will. She is not being retired, just making more memories with a young hunter. -

Congratulations! Great buck! -
Not all bucks in 4H are nocturnal. Got this guy today at 1:30 temp above sixty. In very thick cover, just cruising. Hunt hard and don't give up! They are out there!

My first with a rifle. Savage Axis 7mm-08 Nosler BT. Been real slow this season in my area of 4 H. Very happy to take him today! 8pt. 189 dressed.

LIVE from the woods 2015 Edition! - Sixth Year Going Strong

Been kind of a tough year for me so far until today! Seen a few nice bucks during bow but couldn't get a shot. Got a nice fat doe with crossbow for the freezer, but no buck. Since the start of gun it has been real slow on both of the properties. Saw a few doe and couple small bucks in my area of 4-H, after hunting hard every day. Decided early this morning to go to a spot on the farm property, where I had seen a nice buck during bow season. It's a very thick brushy ridge overlooking a swamp. A natural ground blind near the top. Wind was in my face and above 60 degrees. About 1:30, I see movement below me but it's so thick, I cant make out what it is. Soon I see it's a decent buck! After what seemed a long time, he makes his way to within 20 yards, and a high shoulder shot from my new 7mm-08 with Nosler BT, ends the hunt with my first rifle kill. Not the biggest buck on the property, but I'm super happy with him. Dressed 189lbs.- 4994 replies

Coyotes are really bad on our properties this year. My buddies 4 point went a bit over 100 yards into a thick area, with little blood trail. It took us about three hours to find him. But the coyotes found him sooner and chewed on his hindquarters a bit. Not sure if they are the reason for the low deer sightings. But I know it isn't helping. We will be killing them every chance we get through the winter!

Sounds familiar!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

What a beautiful first buck! Congratulations! Awesome that you stuck to it and had it pay off big time. More bucks will come your way but none will be as special as your first!

My area of 4H has been very slow this week. My buddy shot a 4 point yesterday. The big bucks are not showing during daylight. And very few shots have been heard. I've been hunting hard in the thick stuff, oak ridges and swamps on two good properties, but nothing on my hit list has showed, yet.

Congratulations to your Dad! Hope he never loses the fire in him, to get out and get it done!

Go Panthers!!! Boooooo Cowgirls!

A real friend would never have done that. He sounds like a greedy, selfish, person. And I understand why no one else wants to hunt with this guy. Especially after he has already killed two deer! Hope he missed the 10 point and hit a branch. Sounds like that may be the case.

Happy Birthday! Hope you get the best of everything on your day!

If it were not for flatlanders, there would be much less entertainment this time of year!

Myself, I am not too concerned about a little shoulder meat loss. If the deer runs into the thick swamp or to another hunter I could lose the whole deer! I want them DRT!!
-
This is a good question for first time rifle hunters like myself. I figure right behind the shoulder like I did with my shot gun will get the job done. But it would be cool to just DROP one in his tracks or dead right there. Using a 7mm-08 with 140gr. nosler ballistic tip ammo. From all you long time rifle hunters, where do I want to hit them to have them DRT????

Best of luck to you and your Dad! Good luck on the new property as well!

Controlled logging to create habitat development, would be a huge help. But we won't see it happen in our lifetime. Sadly enough.

Best of luck to you all! Keep safe and shoot straight!
