If you are in the area you are hunting the evening before the hunt, try owl hoots to hear where they are roosting. All the better if you can find more than one place where you can get a fix on multiple birds fot the next morning. If going in blind in the morning, try setting up in a field edge or hedgerow, close to higher ground. Wait to hear first gobbles from the roost. Then move carefully to within 75 yards or so and set the decoys. Call softly till you get a response. Do not over call! He will know where you are just give him some soft clucks and purrs if he's coming to you. Sometimes running and gunning will work later in the morning after the first hens leave for their nests. This can be both exciting and frustrating. But that's turkey hunting! Try to shock gobble them or use a crow or peacock call to locate a tom. It seems like more often than not in recent years they just won't gobble as much as they did years ago. So listen close, if you only hear one gobble move to him quickly and set up. Sometimes, if you can tag along with someone who is more experienced it will help cut the learning curve quite a bit.

I guess Bushnell will get no good word of mouth business from this. Too bad they would not work with you more. A thumbs up or good review on their return policy. From a fellow shooter or hunter, would have made them more money than the cost of replacing your scope. Go with the 3-9x40 if you already like it on another rifle.

No complaints here, just an observation. You seem a bit testy lately, perhaps a bit of cabin fever for you?

LOL.......Sure seems that way this year!

Got in from hunting around noon time and the wife says "I hope you are done hunting for the day. I want to go out." I just looked at her and handed her a pair of gloves and said "fine go put your boots on and you can go OUT to help me drag a deer in" And that my friends is when the fight began........

Might work out better to speak with a customer service rep. to explain what happened and your warranty. Sometimes they can be helpful and make it right for you. If not ,give them a good piece of your mind and buy a Nikon Prostaff or Leupold.

Great post! I think owls are one of the coolest birds. Got quite a variety of them out behind the house. We really enjoy watching and hearing them.

Safe Act Trying to Repeal it Sign it
grampy replied to Huntscreek's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Done. Every little bit helps. Hopefully someday enough politicians will unite to repeal this unjust, passed in the middle of the night law. All we can do at this point is to support any lawmaker willing to take up the challenge of repeal. -
Thankfully you live to hunt another day. Glad you're ok.

My opinion is that a true expert would never proclaim themselves to be one. Only the people who successfully employ their services and advice can claim them to be such. After putting 41 hunting seasons behind me I'm no more an expert at hunting now than I was my first hunting season. I'm still learning almost every time I go in the woods. Am I knowledgeable, yes. Successful, yes. Expert, no way. I'll leave others to make that claim.

22 inches so far. Getting a couple more before it's all done. Wind steady at 15 to 20. Gusts to 35. Drifts in spots over 4 feet. Temp right now at 3 degrees. Spent 4 and a half hours shoveling, snow blowing and plowing. A hot meal and a glass of brandy by the wood stove.....priceless!

Best Place to Retire Away From Snow in East Coast???
grampy replied to halfnelson's topic in General Chit Chat
A little town west of Ashville North Carolina, called Brevard. Very close to Pisgah national forest, thousands of acres of prime whitetail hunting. And some very large antlered bucks. Four seasons, beautiful mountain foliage in the fall, mowing grass by march and far enough west to miss the brunt of most hurricanes. Spent a good amount of time there and the people are fantastic. If not for the fact that I want to be close to the grand kids, I would be there now. -
A couple of minor repairs and gassed up the old plow truck and snow blower yesterday. Put in a good supply of wood. Pancakes and bacon with local maple syrup for breakfast. Schools all closed, so no work today. Close to a foot of light fluffy snow has fallen to this point. Supposed to get about two feet up here in the hills. Will go out today to shovel, snowblow and plow. Windchills way below zero the next couple nights. Yeah...just another winter day in New York.

In New York he would be on Andy's 10 Most Wanted list.

One of the best Super Bowls. One of the worst calls ever.

Well I got another deer weapon for next season
grampy replied to stoneam2006's topic in General Chit Chat
Due to some shoulder problems that make holding my compound at full draw for even 30 seconds painful. I got a Barnett Raptor at the end of last summer. It's a lot of fun to shoot and for 2 weeks had fun hunting with it as well. Like you said, just another tool to hunt deer with. And I too hope for full inclusion this fall, as I will most likely have surgery on one or both shoulders before this fall. Have fun with your new crossbow! -
We used to have a good population of garter snakes around our outbuildings. But the last couple of years for some reason they have disappeared. With that, the mice population has exploded. They are into everything and trapping, poison seem to do little to control them. Never thought I'd say, wish we had more snakes around here!

For sure the older I get the longer winter seems to last! Back in the 60s and 70s when we would have much worse winters, they didn't seem so bad back then.

It's great to see kids excel at something. Keeps them away from some of the bad influences out there. Congrats to you and your daughter for a job well done!

I have worked 35+ years in the printing industry and you are absolutely right about where it's heading now for commercial printing. I too was at a company for a long time with high pressure and a long commute. About 10 years ago I and a few other senior people where let go because of declining sales in the market. My plan B was a local public school district running the graphic arts - printing and mailing department. The salary is not as high as before, but it's by far the best and most rewarding job I ever had. And only a 20 minute drive to get there. And much more time off to spend with my family. First-light, wishing you the best for your own plan B. It is true that when one door closes, another will open.
