  1. So, we have three vehicles. A 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid, a 2006 Ford Escape, and a 2006 Dodge Dakota. A couple daily drivers and the truck for hunting, "truck" things, winter driving, etc. Wife drives the hybrid...I drive the other two and decided to go that route instead of buying a new truck and just having the two vehicles. It's worked out great - having the third vehicle is nice. I let a couple family members borrow one when their vehicle went into the shop for maintenance or the step daughter needed it for moving stuff from her dorm room, etc. I was greeted with a dead battery in the old Escape in my driveway this morning. No biggie, not unexpected given its original equipment. I'll just grab one on my way home from work. Go to truck started her up under my car port/garage and let her warm up. Went back inside for a few minutes, texted the wife about battery and she asks me THE question: "How are you going to get the truck out of the driveway with the Escape behind it?" D'oh. I have a two-car wide driveway, a two-car garage, with a two-car carport built onto it. I parked the truck under the carport and didn't think twice about pulling up nice and close to it with the Escape - you know so the snow can be cleaned out of the driveway easily. I completely boxed in the truck. Slow clap, irony. Slow clap. Battery is charging now - she was trying to crank but just couldn't get turned over. Hoping I can at least get her going to swap out the battery tonight.
  2. I think sanctuaries are misunderstood and misused. With many sanctuaries with known bucks bedding in there, you may take yourself out of the game for much of the season outside of the rut. They do have value no doubt, but I think the value is best had when you have larger acreage. I know many disagree with that premise, but if you have 50 acres and you take the ten consisting of the best bedding and basically make it off limits - you are hunting the crappiest 40 acres and basically paying 20% of your land cost for no use - except for the deer. I think a sanctuary is best used for letting deer bed and feel no pressure, and then hunting the sanctuary itself when the timing and activity is right - we're not talking pounding the place with pressure - just when the time is right to move in and kill. Sounds blasphemous, I know.

    Deer age

Whoah, whoah, here. Let's slow the roll on some of the statements. CA is by far the better aging method - no question on that. But to say it is absolutely positively 100% accurate is misleading. While the technique is again, by far, the best we can do, it is not infallible. So as much to say that accuracy in most NA game animals ranges between 70-95%, varying greatly on species and even some particulars with certain species and locale. So, let's not portend it to be accurate all of the time; it is not.
  6. Dan is the magic behind the vids. BBO was just a company that teamed up with him to film/edit it all. There was some shakeup and bad blood between them after the two DVDs, so I don't think Dan is working with them any longer.
  7. someone must have kicked his dog or something. or maybe hes pissed off at the buck. heck of a buck!
  8. average 1.5 yo doe. dont forget moog is....not small.
  9. 9mm is "cheap" as it gets now. 380 has always been hard to get historically. I agree on the carry comments.
  10. wind chill is 1 degree. excuse my typing skills.
  11. they move in spurts. right before this storm is a freat example. they are calorie loading to sit through the sntorm as much as possible. im in a blind over a fld covered in tracks. wibd is picking up which to me is a bit of a killer on activity at this time of year. seems like I witness activity when wind drops.

    Crud Ring

yeah this is perplexing. its been a proven load for me for two years now. ive probably put 70 or 80 shots through the gun in this format. I thought primers too but if moisture got in the would that cause a ring? I really went through the breech plug too a second time after all the suggestions and its in great shape and clean. appreciate the input and pm dbl. im going to contact him monday. ive got the ml cleaned out great and she should shoot fine for the first shot or two. odd situation.

    Crud Ring

CCI 209M I use welding cleaning jags and the 1/8 when through without much issue. Same issue happened before and after the cleaning of the breech plug.

    Crud Ring

Breech plug is clean. I inspected and cleaned it before having the second hang fire - it was dry too.

    Crud Ring

Shooting 90 gr vol BH209 with a 250 gr SST and standard sabot. Never noticed or had this problem before, but gun is developing a crud ring with 209 - to the point I can only clear it out using foaming cleaner that has sat for 20 minutes. It develops within a few shots. I also seem to get hang fires once the ring is there. I'm familiar with what a bad ring can be (777 pellets), but this one is not as bad at all, but it is there, stubborn to remove, and seems to be a potential source for the hang fires. I didn't notice any shallower loading, however. In the past I could shoot 10+ times with no fear using the BH209, but seems like after shot 2 or 3...its there and seems to be causing me problems. What gives?
  16. This year I started giving meat to a friend for her dogs in exchange for hunting rights. She raises mastiffs and is world-known/ranked within the "mastiff show and breeding circuit." These dogs are big and beautiful. They also eat a lot. I at first had an issue with giving her meat for her dogs, but I am fine with it now after seeing the whole process and results. She moved to an all raw diet of natural foods - chicken, pumpkins, etc. and so on. She also feeds them wild game. Most often freezer burnt/leftover venison, but she also has some elk and other meats. Most of my carcasses go to her now as she takes the ribs (I'm not eating them) as well as some of the leg/neck meat I can' seem to enjoy. I gave her one whole doe, too. The dog's coats are magnificent and they are well-proportioned and active. Makes me re-think the food I give my lazy-azz dogs.
  17. It's going to be cold snowy and windy. If you are in the deer, you are in the deer at this time of year and conditions. I'll be wearing my IWOM tomorrow that's for sure. I have an itch for one more encounter. I've shot three deer each of the last three seasons and for some reason, I want to get a fourth if possible and dedicate some of the meat for jerky and venison sticks. Honestly would love to see some antlers, but at this point a nice doe will be in trouble.
  18. One locale dictated the state flooding hunters with permits? Seems legit.
  19. I think coyote genetics here in NY still show some red wolf DNA markers.
  20. I used to think these progressions were accurate and spot on, but I think it's a farce now. The progressions are linear, but hunter development is not. I enjoy aspects of nearly every single one of those progressions now. I don't see myself ever getting to the point I represent one or even two that are stepping stoned. There's no benefit to labeling hunters with this breakdown. No reason people can't enjoy aspects of all five - or six as doc described - my FIL is largely there.
  21. I wish bang sticks were legal. theyd be good if you could keep incidentals away.
  22. The pink hue is from the IR filter. Your filter is getting stuck somehow.
  23. Having grown up in a military household, my father retired with 23 years of service while in his early to mid 40s. Bottom line, it's a risk-reward logic scenario. More risk, more reward. The problems that come with long-time service are big for many people - and most of it is beyond the actual service. Not much is said what happens to military families as a result of those commitments. I enjoyed a lot of experiences due to my father's service, but to this day, we both have paid a bigger price with lost time, resentment, and other issues. Time cannot be reclaimed. I see all of these CNN and Fox and local news snippets about parents returning stateside, showing them surprising their wife or kids after seven months abroad ONCE. They light up. You want to know how many times I went through my father being gone 6 mos. or more? You'd be counting on your dang toes because you ran out of fingers. Let 'em keep the damn money.
