Ivermectin Study
knehrke replied to Shoots100's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I appreciate that everybody wants to believe in a magic pill and that there's some cabal out there hiding it. But this study's main author, Flavio Cadegiani, an endocrinologist at the biotech company Applied Biology in Brazil, is already under investigation for several other trials where he's seen unbelievable results, not just with ivermectin but with n experimental prostate cancer drug named proxalutamide and others - in short, his reporting is shoddy and he inappropriately censors data. He has an agenda. Most reputable journals won't touch his stuff. The only reason he's even still above water is that Bolisano is quick to jump on this stuff - and there's profit and prestige for those who tow the Brazilian president's line. This is an internet fairy tale. Ivermectin has long been recognized to have modest anti-viral properties of unknown origin, much like hundreds of other drugs. Anti-androgens are an interesting class of drugs as well. But this is the modern day equivalent of peddling snake-oil. It does nobody any good to make outlandish claims, as it casts a shadow over the real work that's being quietly done through rigor and reproducibility. I don't have an agenda, and I have nothing to gain by taking a stance on this. But I do evaluate clinical trial data professionally, so have expertise. And like most scientists, I am a natural born skeptic - a trait I apply to my own research even more stringently. With over a hundred papers published in my career, I have no retractions, no revisions, and my work has never been questioned for content or methodology (interpretation is always arguable lol).- 55 replies

Beware The NEW Gun Laws are in effect and aimed at HUNTERS
knehrke replied to Berniez's topic in General Chit Chat
Not sure I entirely agree. Certainly knowing how to defend yourself is better than not knowing, but my years of training in judo, including a year solid in Japan, did me little good when a gun was pointed in my face. In fact, given that the kid pointing it was ~14 years old and shaking, I didn't really want to escalate. And that turned out to be a good idea, since the confrontation cost me all of $1...gang initiation I suspect, with six of his cronies waiting in the wings if things went South. But I feel you. Learning how to defend yourself is about knowing when and when not to pull the trigger. So to speak. -
Beware The NEW Gun Laws are in effect and aimed at HUNTERS
knehrke replied to Berniez's topic in General Chit Chat
I'm fairly certain that the provision regarding having to post privately-owned buildings in order to "welcome" guns isn't going to stop a hardened criminal. "Geez, you can't carry a gun in here, I guess we'll go rob somewhere else" lol. Much as I hate to see this, I have to admit that most of these laws appear to be aimed squarely at removing guns from private individual's possession entirely. Not at criminals, not at public safety, but at a political agenda. I wonder what happens if the owner of a building decides to post that guns are welcome, but their tenants (individuals or businesses) don't like it...or vice-versa, if somebody is renting, but the owner doesn't want guns there. This could get ugly quick. -
We were there last summer for two weeks - ecocruise on a small 16-person vessel for a week hiking and kayaking in Prince Williams sound, then heli-fished three days on Clear Creak out of Talkeetna while the wife hiked Denali (Mt. McKinley for those of us who grew up in the 70s), then a bit more hiking for the two of us around Talkeetna. Awesome trip, great weather, lots of wildlife. I'm glad you're enjoying it. The wife was back up to Alaska two weeks ago for a meeting on perceptual learning, but didn't get to venture far from Alyeska lodge with dawn to dusk talks, and it rained non-stop while she was there. We made up for it by hooking up in Banff (her coming from the west and me coming from the east, with no hiccups amazingly) and hiking for a week; unreal vistas, too dang many people. We were first on the trail in the morning and had them to ourselves going up. But coming down was like bumper cars with dozens if not hundreds of other folks climbing. The trail head parking lots were full by 9 am. Lake Louise and Moraine Lakes were almost completely inaccessible. LIke I say, amazing place, but I won't be going back soon.

What's going on with Billing Departments ?
knehrke replied to fasteddie's topic in General Chit Chat
And some companies make a "selling" point of their customer service being located in-country - which I applaud. I work with foreign nationals day-in-and-day-out, so I've gotten used to dealing with many different accents. But I appreciate how it could be difficult for others, particularly those of us who have reached a certain age and fired too many guns without hearing protection. -
I can't imagine being young and wanting to get into hunting these days - no access, too many distractions. But it's not like this isn't the norm in many other states. You pay to play. Unfortunate. It's nice to have so much state land available upstate, but inevitably this is going to contribute to the have-have not divide.

This is all just a dick swinging contest by the politicians, passed in response to the Supreme Court ruling. It's like a bunch of six year olds - "you can't tell me what to do!". Makes me sick

Awesome. My buddy just got played by his son last night - his son was flying home from finishing basic training, and he told his Dad that his flight had been delayed three hours. Then he had a buddy pick him up at the airport (the flight was actually on time) and surprised his Dad in the kitchen. Many tears.

Done! She deserves all the support we can provide. My buddy Jeff's son is just finishing basic training n TX and will be home for the first two weeks of August prior to deployment - he's in for six. We hope to get him out on the big pond fishing a couple times before he heads back out. I know it's tough for parents; Jeff and I were on the phone last night when his son called, and it was an immediate, "Got to go, bye" situation. But they sure do come out stronger. Respect.

Had the scare of my life today setting stands...
knehrke replied to Hock3y24's topic in General Chit Chat
You were smart wearing your harness and linesman's belt. I had a similar situation a few years ago, but the stand was so old that it had grown into the tree and barely shifted. Nevertheless, it was immediately replaced - and nearly all our new stands are ladders. And we still add safety ropes to attach our hitches on the ground before we ever ascend, at least for stands > 15 ft high. -
Lots of apples on most of the wild trees on our properties, but man is there a ton of fire blight this year, too. I've never seen so much, from apples to pears, young and old trees alike.
-
I don't mind the heat...too much...but the bugs get to me. Everything gets compressed for me in September with tree stand work, final mowing, getting the boat put away, and we usually take our vacation in September, that I'm often not completely ready for the season. I always say that I'm going to take a doe for the freezer, but then don't pull the trigger. Honestly, I like MZ for doe anyway. But it's tough not to get out there when you have a summer of trail cam pics and big, bloody racks from September starting to get shiny. Season-to-season is a long wait.

Trimmed Xmas trees for a couple years early in high school, then spend some time gutting and refinishing old houses for a local lawyer who had bought them to rent out. Worked the line at Taylor Winery my first summer of college.

That sucks! Have a great Father's Day, regardless. My daughter met me at one of the properties this morning and we spend three hours with chainsaw and forest clearing saw, hacking the jungle back from the ATV trails. That's the kind of father's day gift I appreciate!

My brother caught it the same day as Fauci - I asked him whether there's something he wants to tell me lol. The wife and I are still waiting, but assume that it will eventually hit us. The daughter got it during finals week of her junior year of college, so that sucked; she was down for 4-5 days. I think it's safe to say at this point that it really is similar to a bad cold or the flu. Now we keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't mutate in the wrong direction, however unlikely that may be. I'm glad to hear that all who've got it recently seem to be faring decent. Nomad, was that you in the leopard skin Speedo I saw last weekend? I have one just like it.

There's not one politician who's made it to the apex, neither Biden, Trump, or any other, who is looking out for the little guy. They're thinking in aggregate, greater good, playing the long game (well or poorly) - but you can't believe that they're the "people's". And it sucks when you're collateral damage. Good luck in finding something new and fulfilling.

I see somebody mentioned The Game of Logging...this is a great course. Anyone who plans to spend much time with a blade in hand should take it. Plan ahead though, because slots fill fast And while there's no such thing as overkill when it comes to safety, I suspect that Youtube would suffice for simple limbing and homeowner use with a small electric saw. Please be careful however when dropping dead trees. They can be very unpredictable. It sounds like your pine is small, but even so, a 10" blade and standing dead wood demands respect. It sounds like you're thinking this through carefully though. Well played. Quik story: one time, I dropped a lighting-struck pine for a friend where we had to navigate wires and a greenhouse to fell it - he repaid me with a bottle of Ledaig single malt - which would have been great if it wasn't like drinking Patchouli. Essence of the earth lol.

Another Mass shooting this time in Texas
knehrke replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
I'm of mixed feelings here. I certainly keep a firearm nearby in the house in case of a case, and I'd rather be armed than not when faced with danger outside the house. But brandishing a firearm seems IMHO more likely to escalate a situation than defuse it. And you need to be willing to use it. With deadly force. I would not take a life to stop a mugging or robbery. In fact, I haven't, case in point being some teenage kid and a likely gang initiation. I ended up giving him one dollar. I see both sides of the argument, but it's not black and white. As I suspect is true of most anything dealing with guns. -

knehrke replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
One of our highly placed physicians had a thought that I'd never considered regarding kids and guns. It was simply this: ready access to guns makes it easier for kids to act out that teenage impulse, which disappears in most of us as we age. If that impulse is suicide, it's much more likely the kid ends up dead than there would be by overdose or whatnot. If that impulse is to shoot up their school... I appreciate that sometimes there's planning in an attack like this, it's not always an impulse act. Regardless, I think it's smart to pay particular attention to kids and guns. Trust, but verify. Firearms training. Parental oversight? Honestly, this latest incident leaves me numb and unable to think rationally. I can't even imagine. It's hard to come up with a logical response when the emotional impact of the situation is sending my brain spinning sideways. -
Yeah, you guys are right. Dems are geniuses, pulled the wool ever everyones' eyes. I'm not sure why we even try to fight the evil overlords. Anybody who can't see it must be blind or part of the problem...even somebody who acknowledges issues, but stops short of alleging actual conspiracy. I've got fish to catch - peace out. Chihuahuas not Great Danes

Oh, I have no doubt that big wigs from both sides have been up to a whole host of shenanigans. I mean, isn't that the definition of politics? Walk as close to the line as you can, cross it if you think you can get away with it, win at all costs? My skepticism arises from the contention that there is a conspiracy. If Dems have managed to get away with everything they've been accused of without leaving obvious trails, particularly in this day and age, in diverse regions and from top to bottom, then they deserve the brass ring. They are miracle workers. And if I were the opposition, I wouldn't be heralding that fact too loudly. Regardless, a push toward greater transparency can't be a bad thing. Human nature being what it is.
-
You must stop...you're crushing it, but the impersonation is getting stale. Seriously, though, I do wonder how many people honestly believe that there's a global conspiracy? Personally, I can't see it given our system's transparency - there's always going to be cheaters, but the scale doesn't compute - but I do think that it exemplifies how marginalized most people feel, both on the right and on the left. If your voice doesn't (and can't) count, then what option do you have? Violence, right? It certainly explains much of what we are seeing, hearing proposed, experiencing these days. Again, from both sides, neither of who feels heard. PARROTS NOT LIONS

The wife and I watched a live birth this past weekend, and we've seen two other fawns on their feet in the past week.
