  1. I love stalking/still hunting. Not that i am very good at it,but i feel like i am getting better every year. I am 46 now,so probably in the not too distant future i will be getting worse at it... It is fun to be on the ground with deer.
  2. Got a doe on Sunday with my wolf muzzleloader. I still hunted and was going to work my way around a swamp but only made it to the very beginning of it. I peeked over a rise down towards the swamp and saw the shape of a deer through the brush,50yds off. She looked to be on the small side, and i thought maybe it is a button buck all by himself like that. I checked it out with my binoculars and also scanned for other deer. And sure enough, there was another one looking at me. This one looked smaller yet and kept staring in my direction. The wind was in my favor, and we all stood still for over 10 minutes. Then the 2nd deer put its head down and i saw antlers against the snow. It was a forkhorn. So that decided that the doe, which was bigger than him,was a shooter. Now i waited another couple of minutes before they finally started moving very slowly. When they were behind some trees i got my footing and the gun up and ready. Eventually the doe stepped into a somewhat open lane and i shot. She didn't run, just walked slowly. I was getting nervous about a bad shot, and she walked slowly towards me,tail twitching like crazy. The buck stopped at my 9 o'clock, wondering why his doe didnt run. He ran off as i reloaded. I had lost sight of the doe and headed in her general direction, and there she lay. I checked out the hit site and noticed a sapling i hit, maybe 5' in front of her. It deflected my bullet some so i hit her further back then where i aimed, but i still got lung and liver and she passed fairly quick. Lucky harvest, finally some meat for the freezer, bow season was a wash.
  3. big doe down,i let the fork horn that was hanging with her go. Finally some freezer bounty!!! It has been a long month and a half...
  4. I am skipping the morning hunt. I was out yesterday in the wrong location, sat for a few hours then decided to still hunt and cut some tracks pretty quickly, and i think i scared those deer on my way in. I stayed on the east side of a north south ridge and expected to find some deer there. Tracks is all i found, and a fresh scrape. Then hiked for a long while with no tracks, then hiked to the top of the ridge. More tracks and three fresh scrapes there. Then i went down to an empty beaver swamp on my way back to the truck. I got close to the edge on my side and a deer stood up on the other side, about 140 yds away. Small doe. Then another stands up,and holy moly the biggest buck i have ever seen on the hoof. You know how you have to look for a rack sometimes? This was the opposite, twice as wide as his ears at least. He didn't know why the doe got up,and i put the scope on him but had branches on my side and brush on his side. I gave the shot a 10% chance of connecting,so passed. I tried to work my way to an opening, but he took a few steps as well and was covered again. Then the whole group took off,6 deer total. Pretty neat too see him though.
  5. I guessed 6.21 and first shot was 6.22. Pretty close, but i would rather use my luck for a deer encounter....
  6. get up at 5.15,out the door by 6,hiking to my spot by 6.05. Hell of a commute, some have it rough...
  7. Good luck to all of us!!!
  8. Your guys gutting process must be different from mine. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
  9. wow,i am just about to step out to see how much we got here. I know it is enough to keep me busy for a while.
  10. i looked through it from the powder end. Also it is bigger diameter at the primer side. Maybe it is not tapered, but the bore is bigger on the primer side, and then maybe it is just smaller at the powder end and no taper, just a smaller hole. I did get a delayed fire when practicing, maybe a little over 1/2 a second. I didn't have that problem with the white hot pellets. Maybe i should drill the powder end out to match the rest of the breech plug bore.
  11. Mine was pretty good, saw decent bucks as well without getting a shot. Best thing was stumbling on a bruiser 30yds off when still hunting, worst was loosing a high shoulder shot doe. I feel like i learned more, and the deer are sure in a different pattern here in 4F than the last couple of years. No apples or acorns changed their hang outs a lot... I love hunting from the ground, but it not easy to get a shot. I blew a stalk on a bedded buck i saw from 75 yds away when i got to 30. My heart was pounding though. I am already looking forward to next year with all new bow and i am going for lighted nocks as well. I have a hard time seeng my arrow hit and dont like that.
  12. hey,i was just joking dom. It sure digressed into something else...
  13. So,is the bore generally tapered in the breech plug? Mine seems to be that way in my wolf in line muzzleloader. Just cleaned it really good, and i never noticed that. I guess it is supposed to accelerate the primer charge? I just switched to blackhorn powder, and i think i like it already. Look out deer!! I doubt i will do as well as last year,i got a buck and a doe by 7.15. One or the other would be fine thank you.
  14. You just start trouble dom, these controversial topics....tsk tsk
  15. hey i guess we will have to make due with what we get,as usual.
  16. This is pretty similar to oil companies receiving huge subsidies from the government, even though they post pretty nice quarterly earnings. Business as usual. And people complain about renewable energy getting too many subsidies.
  17. Sounds like we will have more than a little snow. That makes for a tough drag if there is 10" or more. Also might mess the travel patterns up. Doesn't matter to me,i will walk to find the deer if they don't come to me first.
