My goals are: - have fun - 3 1/2 year old or better buck (was going to go with 2 1/2 with the bow, but upped the anty) - control the doe population and keep the farmer happy by shooting as many as present themselves and i have tags for.

Sounds like a personal problem to me...maybe old age?
-
Keep it simple. Cut on contact fixed 3 blade head. G5 Montecs for me, and my bow is plenty fast enough for mechanicals. One less thing to go wrong when it really counts. I dont have to buy replacement blades to boot, just sharpen on a flat stone and reuse.

Looks like the first real giant of the season has fallen
WNYBuckHunter replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
It was all over this site last year. -
70s and rain with a light west wind for the 2nd (my opening day). Kills my plan for the stand I was going to be heading to. Hopefully it changes before then.

I havent had one eaten by yotes yet, but last year I shot a big doe at a buddy's place. We gutted it out and went to his house for the ATV to bring it out. By the time we arrived back to the deer, the coyotes were already in the vicinity, as one ran off less as we were pulling up to the area. I imagine if you left a deer lay there overnight, youd find scraps the next day.

True, but the choice of shooting 1 1/2 year old deer is in no way comparable to murder. A fair comparison would be eating habits. We are becoming more and more educated that eating healthy is beneficial, and things look to be making a turn for the better overall. Theres no legislation on what we can and cant eat, only guidelines on what is or isnt good for us, and education, starting at a young age. Some people dont care, and thats their choice, which they are free to make. -
No, they are laminated stocks. That one is a custom shop receiver and Pro Hunter barrel.

TC Encore 50 cal muzzleloader. Weaver Grand Slam rings and a Vortex Viper HS 2.5 - 10 x 44 scope. I run 250 grain Hornady SSTs with Blackhorn 209 powder. My backups are my 20ga Mossy 500 and my Marlin 336 30-30

I drive mine until they get too expensive to justify fixing. Ive only ever sold a couple of my cars to anyone other than the scrap yard.

Disagree with mandatory statewide ARs. Agree with education and volunteer ARs if the person chooses to do so.

Yep, a guy in NY tried it last year. It had nothing to do with him not being able to back it up though, the taxidermist knew the deer from the farm it was raised on, plus they aged the jawbone at 2 1/2. -

Oh I understand the skepticism completely, and we will see how it all pans out, Im just saying, the genetics seem to be there, as the one shot last year has held up as a legit wild deer to this point. Im sure it was scrutinized. -

2 big deer like that in the same general area means there are good genetics, and most likely some management going on there. It doesnt mean they were had raised or farm deer necessarily. -
I run a couple miles a day, Im sure Id be fine unless he tries to run me down in the Raptor, not even my dirty, manly truck is gonna out run that thing.

If its standing, its great to hunt during gun season. The problem youll run into is that the deer hide out in there, and you basically have to still hunt the field on a windy day, or drive them out of it, which is a challenge in itself. We drive corn fields later in the season, and the standers are in tree stands at the end/sides of the field. You can literally watch deer get bumped by the drivers, and they move ahead, then 8 or 10 rows over and double back, basically circling the drivers. Big corn fields can be a real pain in the butt. Fields that were chopped for silage are of no use during the season. If the field was cut for grain, particularly by old equipment, it can still be a draw in the later season, but most of those big open fields only get used at night, at least around my area.

Phade, if you need to get it home, we can put it in the bed of my man sized truck, that spends most of its life dirty. Friggin pansies.

Are cellular trail cams worth it?
WNYBuckHunter replied to Merlot's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
How about we dont turn this into a trail cameras are bad debate? The guy is asking a question about cellular cams, if you have no experience with them, and just want to bitch about what others do, take it to a different thread please. -
I started out with one. It worked great for targets. Got rid of it after I forgot to unlock the pendulum for stand hunting twice, and missed 2 deer because of it.
