  1. can shoot touching arrow groups at 40 yards and hold crossbow until I get the perfect shot. Can only hold draw on compound for so long. Compound there are so many more variables of your shooting form that can be off. X- bow - crosshairs on and pull trigger. I like using both. I might be the only person that doesnt complain about the NY seasons. I think its perfect. Have so many options and can get two bucks. Where else is like that? a lott of states only have very limited shotgun seasons. Here you can hunt with bow for a month and a half, hunt the rut with bow or crossbow for two weeks , into a liberal gun season (that sentence doesnt sound right - liberals + gun season....lol) and then a week of late muzzle. Then the flip option of an early muzzle up north and a liberal early bear season. Right now I have tags for a bear and 5 deer! i think it works great !
  2. have shot mechanicals for last few years, grim reapers and rage. Have had no issues with them. Make a good shot and a field point would work. But if a bad shot do you want penetration or expansion? guess it depends if it was near the shoulder or the guts? If i am hunting elk or moose I am cert hunting a fixed blade for longer shots and the bigger animal, want to be sure it gets thru a bigger animal and at low poundage of 50 or under would prob shoot fixed as well. I think the advantage of the mechanicals is more the flight being more like a field point. But if your shooting 50+ lbs and shoot within your effective range at a whitetail then either should be just fine. I dont do practice shots with the mechanicals as they always seem the same as my field points, but with fixed blade it seems i had to practice and sight in more for a difference from field points.
  3. been making my own version - I use a store bought lime vinagrette and mix it with a cole slaw sauce. Works great on fish!
  4. didnt take a pic but baha fish tacos with pico de gallo and a little lime vinaigrette.
  5. have hunted many years in the heat with little to no luck. This year decided to extend my fishing cause its such a waste of time usually. Deer moving more at night when its hot. Am sure they move some but its just better in cooler weather.
  6. have used them. The ones i have used dont seem to drip real well but would think the scent is still there. Cant say it has helped to be sure but cant say its hurt. I have sprayed scrapes before and have seen them tore up after and last year sprayed a scrape and shot a buck there an hour after and he was licking the branches and on his hind legs to get to them.
  7. wasnt as good as the first, but liked the ending better.
  8. Venison trucker burger with smoked gouda and peppers! Damn I like venison!
  9. i am thinking of tying a red balloon to my buddys treestand near the swamp! HEHE . Hes already a bit timid of walking in the dark to stands. That ought to keep him out of the woods for a day or two, just playing a little defense!
  10. I went to put up a stand on a new spot of ground i just got permission for (12 acres) and there was a treestand up there already. The owners ddint know it was out there but found out who it was and they have to take it down this weekend. So I will be putting up a new stand on Sept 30th the day before season.
  11. have an adirondack trip this weekend and forecast is for 85! we were planning on bear hunting .......so much for that. Looks like bass fishing instead. Good thing I planned a spot with some great fishing. Last year there was little spots of ice, this year the bass will prob be hitting topwater! hope it cools down. If its 80's on Oct 1st, i will be drifting for walleyes instead of hunting.
  12. i got one in the mail three years ago without requesting it. So have done it ever since. I tell my hunting buddy that they only send these to the best hunters! lol Just cause its funny! I should tell him he can sign up........nah ! lol
  13. agreed there. I often hunt two different locations and might be there same amount of time. Its interesting to look back at the end of the year and see the totals of how many deer you have seen and where. I have done it for 3 years now. Got mine in the mail a couple weeks ago.
  14. If its 85 i might go around and raid coolers too!
  15. and working to get that permission is still a good gig - to be out on a tractor on a nice day in a cornfield. Beats being in a useless meeting or in a factory for the day.
  16. seems like a tough hunt in big woods and a few bears around. Its not like the maine population. And just kinda have to stumble into them. And if I was walking around in fur coat in 80' weather I would be hard to find in a cool spot too. I think we are gonna find a spot near the water and sit for a bit.
  17. headed out Sat morn to stay in dacks through Tues morn. Good thing where we are staying is great fishing cause at 85 degrees aint seeing no bear!
  18. a few panfish from Oneida lake = fish sandwich with tarter and a few pieces with cocktail sauce - one hour later!
  19. i am def into the scent control. My hunting buddy isnt ( til this year) . I got three deer last year and he got none, same hunting spots. Have a lot walk right under the stand all the time. He never does. Passed on a lot of small ones as well. I think its def worthwhile. Have seen deer catch scent and stop dead put nose in the air and run tails up when downwind. I wash all my clothes in non scent soap, spray them down and hang them outside in a little side shed. My buddy had his wife wash his clothes in "mountain fresh" soap.......no deer
  20. love the .32 special - bring that - no backup! its got you covered! My brother carries one when he used to hunt.
  21. Bow is DIALED in! Shot last night one at 40, 30, 20 all in the 10 ring! clothes are descented and hanging outside, stands are setup with shooting lanes trimmed, time off is in for the season, lets do this!!!
  22. been putting in for a Maine permit for 8 years! hoping to get one before I am 70. Already have a camp lined up to use, topo maps and a 30-06. Just need the permit. My hunting buddies grandfather went years ago with his hunting buddy (can put two people on permit) and they got a moose and never said to anyone which of them shot it , was a team effort! lol. We are gonna do the same thing, just need to be lucky for the permit. Cow or bull dont care.
