  1. I like to summer fallow my clover ground, plant it to wheat in the fall, then frost seed in March. Never ever a weed issue in 43 years of doing. No sprays needed, cheaper, and far better for the environment. Of coarse, I take the hay cutting off, so this may not work for everyone.
  2. DIY tip for the day: When buying replacement cord - string, make sure it's the wax version. Goes though, so much easier and last 10x longer. Colors also available; to make it purdy.
  3. I have one like this. Works great on leather. $16.95 ON Ebay; FS.. Lawdwaz, their still made in USA...
  4. We had lightning with no thunder. They get that kind of weather in the desert in Arizona. Rained with a little pea size hail mixed in for good measure for one minute, fifteen seconds. Time to water that pumpkin seed again so she sprouts.
  5. Dropped the gates from Middleport to Brockpot. Draining out the little creeks. Hole in a culvert that runs under the canal in Holley. Now that the canal is being turned over to the Power Authority, money to replace? Not much mention about the Erie here. Wonder how this will affect the Fishing Derby coming in July. Anyone entering?
  6. I like the idea of the adjustable camera head. Wonder why others don't have?
  7. Last time I was out with a friend, hooked an 18 lb salmon, then the waves hit. That lake can turn into angry monster in an instant with only a few clouds in the sky. He gave me the wheel and the pole while he pulled the other down riggers in. He kept yelling, " steer into the wind." My arms felt like they were ready to fall off. The fish made it in the cooler; just barely. It was fun, looking back at it now. Got to get out there again, soon.
  8. About midway, in that picture, just right of the bigger trees; it looks like a tail, legs and a head of a deer looking straight at ya. Do you see it? You always capture the moment wooly!
  9. I spend three days a week with my 88 years old dad. I like to make every day I have with him, Fathers Day.
  10. Mom and newly hatched poults strolled out onto the lawn kept laneway yesterday, just 15 yards or so ahead of the tractor. I quickly shut the engine down and watched eleven poults struggling to get through the 2 inch freshly cut grass. This is the second group seen in a week. The first group was smaller in number and had their wing feathers. It surprised me in the number of chicks she had hatched out. This group was all in down and very young. It made me laugh to watch the little fellas keeping up with mom so well. She would stop, allowing the stragglers to catch up looking at me very cautiously. I would have got pics, but with all the excitement with the honey bees;( in the Pumpkin Post of Land Management Section), I ran over my new pop and shoot camera with the tractor. Had quite a day yesterday. I'll try to get some pics in the days forth.
  11. I know growers need to have pumpkins ready for their commercial customers in September. The dry weather could soften the blow slightly and make a market for October. I got hit with the wet weather the last 3 Junes and no pumpkins for retail. This year looks like the exact opposite with to dry. The need for irrigation will raise the price. Hopefully, things will work out for ya!
  12. Sorry to hear that. We had this happen years ago to a neighbor when our cows jumped a fence. Got into a 4 acre green headed oat field and did quite a bit of damage. He was able to harvest quite a few oats. We worked out an agreement with him to plant the field to wheat at no cost to him. He was quite happy with that and we became real good friends through the years.
  13. I kinda do what you do with the field corn seed. Try to buy non hybrid types shared around the neighborhood. I try to save between 6 to 7 hundred seeds. I got the land worked up nicely. Started planting hills. Heard a buzzing noises; turn my head and there was a swarm of honey bees moving backside. I took after them with a tractor; thought I had them dropped in a tree but, the little buggers got air born on me again. I got into the middle of them several times clapping my hands, but they wouldn't drop. Ended up crossing a roadway; having several motorist stop wondering why some guy crossing the road walking quickly clapping his hands. Must have look quite comical. One car ran right through them Another motorist wanted to know if he should call someone, LOL. I lost them, on my nearly 2 mile journey when they crossed a waterway on a wind shift. Guess they already had a home in mind.
  14. Got the hay off the pumpkin land, now to work up and get some seed in the soil. Going to use liquid fertilizer 46-15-15 and install a tank on a trailer for watering means. Pick out a few for jack o lanterns and the rest for the deer. Anyone plant pumpkins for the deer?
  15. Dryer than a frogs hair here. Come to mention it, frog season opened yesterday, LOL.
  16. The government could call grows idea a surcharge. Keep the money and hand out lolly pops to the successful hunters. LOL.
  17. Their's nothing nicer, that I can think of than picking a nice ripe watermelon out of the garden. Our soils in NY. produces some of the best tasting produce in the world. I use to plant those small yellow ones.Going to pick up a couple flats of reduced tomatoes and peppers. One for our family and one for the turkey and rabbit family, LOL.
  18. The DEC sure has a real problem on their hands, that at this point no cure for.
  19. Their are " legal ways" to draw deer off posted properties.
  20. Hate to see this. Deer, not much attention is paid to. Male? I'm sure the DEC. is called on a situation like this.
  21. One thing I don't care for is running across fawns while mower hay. The mothers plant them under heavy legume cover where their tough to see from the seat. I walk the field, and still can miss them.. This year isn't as bad as some; as the hay is shorter due to the dry conditions; again.
  22. Real dry here. The rocks seem to come to the top, even on mild winters. I am cutting hay this week, then work the ground up for the pumpkins and radish. I noticed something jumping up in one corner of the wheat field, other day. I parked my belonging for a few to find out. Turned out to be a hen with 5 poults jumping to get at the kernels off the heads. Size of a soft ball already. Sure glad to see that.
  23. Don't seem to be bothering the horses much, but the deer are another story.
