Over seeding..
landtracdeerhunter replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Funny how some deer won't touch certain things. I believe the farmers got the deer use to radish here, planting it into wheat stubble. Three years now, no radish has been planted in large fields. I kicked in with radish; BOOM. -

Are you going to try my mixture this season? -
Over seeding..

I plant the oats first, about an inch or so deep or into the moisture for a dry year like this one. Then spread the radish seed on top, giving it a good roll down. Planted oats in beets too. Deer feed heavily on the oats till their gone. They hit the radish mid to late October. They didn't eat many beets or turnips when their radish around. I wouldn't trade my oat radish mixture for anything else. Sixty four lb. of oats and eight lb. of radish to the acre makes a nice stand. Worked into muzzleloader season last year. 2013 and 14, deer fed on the radish into February. -
No Till Plantings..
landtracdeerhunter replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
No till has been around for a long time. I sold and serviced No till planters back in the early 80"s. Allis Chalmers were one of the first no till planters for corn in our area. No till became less popular for many years, ( as people misused it) but higher fuel prices and better education brought demand strongly back on the market place. -
No Till Plantings..

I used one of these up till a couple years ago. On dry year, it worked well; on wet years, it didn't work at all on our heavy clay soils. -
Doesn't surprise me. We have lat bloomers here also. The fresh rubs showing up in February tells it.

Woke to a much needed steady rainfall this morning. My second planting of radish- oats mix is just coming up. Seed laid in the dust for over two weeks until last weekend shower. Starting to look greener already.

Some nice video clips. They sure like to pose for the camera.

A few tents on the walnuts and pussy willow. A bug is stinging the oak leaves last year and this.

landtracdeerhunter replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
I watched archery between Korea and the United States yesterday. Korea just beat the U.S by one point in a sudden death shoot out. The bows they shoot are amazing. -
After fighting with Mother Nature, rabbits, deer, and turkey, starting buying all my produce down at the East Aurora flea market. Those people that run that little farmers market down there, have some of the best tasting fruits and vegetables at great prices. Their muskmelons are some of the best tasting I have had. The peaches and cherries came right out of our county, but he's selling at more affordable prices than I can purchase locally. We run down and buy enough for three families, then divide everything up . Some of you, I'm sure know who I'm talking about.

If not these bucks, others will come in. You just have to be there, ready.

Finally some dampness. Ended up with nearly 2/10" from a fast moving thunder shower yesterday afternoon. We got another this morning with about the same. My radish was spotty coming up. One piece has been planted for over two weeks with no sign of germination. May try to replant if needed. Some field corn fields look rather good, considering the drought. Others, some corn is knee high in areas, other is earing. Bare spots are common. Soybean took the dry conditions very well with some fair looking fields. White pinto and red kidney beans fields look pretty good. Potatoes are doing real good. No beets planted, as I believe it was just to dry to germinate seed. Going to be some large payouts in crop insurance, this year.

Their is a 14 year old boy that has been missing ever since the fire started on Wednesday. It is feared he was trapped in one of the buildings that was destroyed by the fire. Prayers go out to the family in hopes that he returns safely.

Contaminated water runoff flowed into the Erie canal . It also flowed into storm sewers that drain into 18 mile creek. Millions of gallons polluted the environment. This doesn't even include the black toxic tire smoke that poured into the sky for hours.

I 'd like to believe the weather people, but it just doesn't rain here anymore.

Good luck on the buckwheat. Was always a fun crop to grow and the pancakes were delicious.

My SIL lives less than a block north of the fire. Asked to leave their house They stayed behind watering their roof down from fling embers until fire crews relieved them. The heat and smoke was intense. Fire companies from three counties there. Fire companies did a tremendous job in fighting this roaring monster, which is still burning intense this morning. Hats off to all of them and all that responded.

Big game hunting in less than a week? Any land for sale in Wyoming? LOL.

Hornets fly into my wood tree stands and scrape the soft wood off on the surface of the walls, while I sit and watch.

Looks like a great spot for some serious deer hunting to me. Hope you get some venison out of there. -
We received about 2/10" over night. Their saying worst drought since the 60"s. Water table is near or at record low levels for a good chunk of western New York.

Found a few poult feathers in the second cut hay. It didn't take long for the turkey to find those grasshoppers.

Glad you got the moisture. You should have some nice salads for the wildlife. Keep some pics coming. The area I planted Tuesday was worked in June. It absorbed Mondays rainfall . Seed down an inch or so is in moisture and sprouting. I planted the radish a little deeper than normal to reach some of that moisture. Oats already have sprouts. Grass seed should hold on top ok..
