phade
13 Wham reported this morning that the youth season was taking place...it caught my eye because you usually don't hear about hunting news on the actual news... Just goes to show how much confusion there is on it...phew!

Chevy
I just talked to a guy planning to take his kid hunting during the special youth gun hunt in October. He saw it passed on TV. These guys won't bother checking the regulations so they will be out there.
growalot
did anyone ever get an answer from DEC?

Cabin Fever
This is crazy! You don't know who or what to believe!?!? I would "think" if the news is reporting it, and if it wasn't 100% certain yet, the DEC would immediately issue a disclaimer or something?? landtracdeerhunter
Interesting that WNY hasn't received an response yet. Believe it was on the goveners desk, but wasn't there a time limit for signing? Edited July 25, 2012 by landtracdeerhunter
WNYBuckHunter
The guy I emailed can take a week or so to get back to me sometimes, but he always ends up giving me good info.
growalot
What is going on ?!?!?...Just got the NYODN and the front page say the youth hunt doesn't look good...do to a bill that says no guns are to be allowed during archery seasons...making the youth hunt null and void...illegal actually This is really an embarrassment when the DEC would allow miss information out to the public in such a manner as to thoroughly confuse the population...is there no one in charge of public relations/media? No gun's durring archery ddoes that mean no small game hunting at that time. Now I am getting confused they need to post this more clearly i think. WNYBuckHunter
What the bill says exactly is this... "8. The only junior hunter days for big game hunting the department of environmental conservation may authorize during archery seasons are junior archery days." The bill has yet to actually pass and be put into law.
WNYBuckHunter
Heres a link to the complete bill http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld=&bn=A10583&term=2011&Summary=Y&Actions=Y&Text=Y&Votes=Y
growalot
this is what the article in ODN said... "When state law makers approved legislation limiting crossbow use to the regular firearms and late muzzle loader deer seasons, the bill carried with it a clause prohibiting firearms use during the regular archery season. http://www.outdoornews.com/July-2012/Crossbow-use-remains-unchanged/ Edited July 25, 2012 by growalot
phade
I think the clause intent is for firearms use for deer hunting...not small game.
fasteddie
I think the clause intent is for firearms use for deer hunting...not small game. I would tend to agree but there are always some screwy technicalities that would change the meaning .
Lawdwaz
This is a terrible display of work by the DEC. They really should be ashamed.
phade
Actually the DEC is in a rock and a hard place. They literally cannot say too much. The DEC wants the youth season, but their power could be trumped. The bill/law that kills it is pending...so they can't comment on it, other than to say they will comply, which they have done. They simply cannot tell the public anything because they don't know the final result. Blabbing about it is a political game killer for them...biting the hand that feeds is a no-no.
growalot
I would think Channel 13 would have to check their source before going to air...so where do you think they got their info from? The same can be said for NYODN...where did they get their info...two conflicting story's about the same thing With the DEC sending out E-mails on season dates and not even mentioning a youth hunt
skully
Call them up and they will tell you exactly what is happening believe it or not. As for the news going live with a youth hunt, they screwed up like everyone else did. The Dec did screw this up, they should have been crystal clear on what was going on. But to tell you all the truth, they dont care, there is no fallback on this. Who cares if there is no youth hunt, the majority of people are against it. If there is a 14 or 15 yr old crying about this, then guess what, take them with you on opening day..............................

Thats where the news agencies got their info, straight from DEC. Once the new bill passed though, it put things up in the air.

Who cares if there is no youth hunt, the majority of people are against it. Care to back up either of these claims with actual info? The DEC has stated that they want the youth hunt. Its right in the 5 year plan, so that would mean that they DO care. The fallback on it, if it is signed, is to push to change the legislation again next year. landtracdeerhunter
Wonder why wasn't the info on the new bill released to new media? Where they threw early youth gun season into crossbow season usage. Still don't understand that reasoning. Chevy
Why would they or any other group continue to attack the archery season each year when the decision has alreay been made? It is so devisive. Just because the DEC wants it does not mean it is good for hunting or archery season. They also thought is was a good idea to give out 2 DMP to each hunter every year until the sighting of a doe in many areas is rare.
