JGaruti3
I was wondering if anyone buys the muzzleloading privilege in order to get the extra tag for archery? It says on the tag you can use it for either muzzleloading or archery. Are there any rules or regulations from doing this? I am considering doing this if I have early success with my regular Archery tag...especially if I get a nice buck.
steve863
Actually for me it's the other way around. I really don't bowhunt anymore nor did I ever consider myself a real bowhunter, but I still purchase a bow tag that can be used during muzzleloader season if I wouldn't get a deer during the gun season. RangerClay
Just remember that you cannot shoot two bucks with those tags. One is antlerless.
JGaruti3
that is no problem because I love that doe meat
zeke83
I was wondering if you could legally do this....so far I have found nothing to say you cant. This would be great so I could take a doe early in bow season, and still be able to hunt for that big buck.
Doewhacker
Yes since it is called a Bow/Muzzeloader tag its usefull for either season but not gun season. I get my Bow tag every year and use it first followed by my doe permit, if it is in the right zone that is. So really one could use all but a regular season buck tag in archery season. zeke83
So your sayin I can use my DMP tag during bow season? That means I could take 3 doe or 1 buck and 2 does during the bow season? Is this on the DEC website anywhere...I need to read it before I do it.
UpStateRedNeck
Supersportsman, NY gets another 100$ of my bucks you can bet I'm taking a nice big fat doe again with my boe this year. Never tasted deer meet so good as that doe who never knew what hit her right at the height of apple season last year.
Doewhacker
Here you go zeke, See page 26 of the Hunting and trapping guide, or look online here http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/37136.html under section titled Big Game Hunting. You can use your DMP in bow. I tried to cut and paste but it didn't work out to well.
Culvercreek hunt club
Zeke---they are 100% correct. Actuall two years ago I did the opposite...tagged out in muzzleloader. last year I filled my one doe tag during bow and both bow/muzz tags went on fat does from up north during muzzleloader- 3 down in the first week of the season. bubba
I buy the extra tag for muzzleloading and take the week off to fill them.
SteveB
I buy it but hunt up to the last day of the season. Keep in mind you can use them, your unused regular season tag (doe only) or unused dmp's in the late mz season as well. They are also good in the northern zone for early bow the following year until 10/1.
fasteddie
I buy the Archery & ML tags so I am covered .......
burmjohn
Yup, I dont own a Muzzle yet, but got the tag anyways for bow season and if I get to hunt Muzzle. Plus there were only DMP for PP in our area.
biggamefish
You might want to reread the dmp rules. I was under the impresion that you could only use your dmp tag during bow in a bow only zone I will have to reread it but that is how I think i read it last year. burmjohn
Hunters possessing a Deer Management Permit (DMP) may take one antlerless deer per permit, in addition to deer that may be taken with a regular big game tag or Bow/Muzz Antlerless or Bow/Muzz Either Sex tags. DMPs may only be used for antlerless deer (have no antlers or antlers less than 3" long). DMPs may only be used in the WMU for which they are issued. DMPs are valid during all Southern Zone seasons, the Northern Zone regular and late muzzleloading season, and in all Westchester and Suffolk County seasons. Junior Bowhunters may use DMPs during the special archery seasons and during the regular season. Hunters may transfer or receive up to 2 DMPs from other hunters (see Consignment of Deer Management Permits for instructions). An overview of how DMP quotas are established is available at Understanding DMPs: Quota Setting and Permit Selection.
SteveB
Nope - all dmp's are good in bow season in their respective wmu.
biggamefish
DMPs are valid during all Southern Zone seasons, the Northern Zone regular and late muzzleloading season, and in all Westchester and Suffolk County seasons. Steve you are right, I thought i read it different last year. The DMP's are good in any season in southern zone only that is what I must have read and got fumbled up. :-[
steve863
If one hasn't filled a regular season buck tag, this could also be used in the late bow/muzzleloader season to take a deer of either sex.
Culvercreek hunt club
I must not be reading you right Steve.....The regular buck season tag is only good during the regular season. It isn't valid during the late bow/muzz season. ONly the Bow Muzz tags and DMP's are good during the late season.
Doewhacker
Culver... follow the link I provided...Steve is right you can use it in the late season. Fourth bullet below. Except: May be used for Antlered or Antlerless Deer [/size] • In Westchester County (WMU 3S). • In Suffolk County (WMU 1C). • In areas restricted to bowhunting only. (WMUs 4J and 8C) • In late seasons (with bowhunting or muzzleloading privilege). • Next Fall, September 27–30, 2011 in the Northern Zone bowhunting season with 2010/11 bowhunting privilege

Culvercreek hunt club
I read and reread it....I still don't agree.....That is talking about the bow/muzzleloader tags NOT the regular season buck tags
Culvercreek hunt club
Check that last one...I just read it for a third time and it makes sense now....I NEVER knew that....so you can take a doe on your buck tag with a muzzleloader in the late southern season.......hot damn!!
