dwallace
Had 3 bucks come in tonight. I ended up making a bad gut shot on the biggest one. A nice 8 point. I waited 4 hrs and we just got back from tracking it. Never found it and lost blood after about 200 yards. Never laid down either! Did find a 10" long piece of his intestine on the ground. Yikes. I am sick to my stomach over this. I don't like making bad shots and then not finding them. It's only happened twice to me. A branch deflected my arrow and my arrow went low and towards the back of the rib cage. I am so disgusted! Don't even want to hunt anymore this year! I will try to go out in the morning with daylight but the odds don't look good! Dave

wdswtr
If he lost intestines he is down for the count. Give it all you got and then some tomorrow, walk grids, get help, call in the dogs, dont give up yet. Its a cold night.
erussell
He'll be dead by early morning, if hes not already dead. If your finding his guts on the ground he might be close to death right now. Rule #1 gut shot deer get an immediate back out from the stand and return on after 8-10 hrs at the very least. Arrows kill by bleeding and there are very little veins in the guts. You have to wait for the poison in the guts to do there work for the deer to die. It takes a while. I have found 7 gut shot deer for various people and none of them were easy. The one and only gut shot deer that I have had, I didnt get another arrow into him until the following night, but he was close to dead by then.

RTF
This deer is dead you need to give it your all. Pull up google earth and look for areas he might have wanted to bed down in. Like others have told you, call in Deer Search.
First-light
We are all rooting for ya but do as Buck says and call deer search. They are amazing and helped my Nephew find his deer last year. Sort of the same situation. He couldn't believe where this deer lay dead. He must of passed it a few times on his initial search. Good luck. dwallace
Thank you guys for all the info. I am going to call Deer Search this morning. Hopefully I can find this bad boy. At least it was a cold night! Good luck hunting to all and don't do what I did !!!!
landtracdeerhunter
This is where hunting gets interesting. The tracking job can become more intense, than the hunt itself. Really can't say anymore then whats been said. Sometimes those deer will bed in an area closer then u think. I agree, give him till at least 10 today. Your nose is going to be the most useful tool u got. Wish I could give u a hand, we'd find that bad boy. One thing. keep your spirits up, be positive, and good luck. Deerthug
Good luck finding him. Don't give up. I shot my first 6 pt during rifle in 2010 and when i went down i did not see any blood. I looked for over an hour without a sign of blood, backed out and then went back with my buddy and after searching for another hour we found some blood, tracked it and found him 20 yards into some really thick brush. Turns out i misjudged where he went into the trees. I know its not the same as your situation but i was sick too.

G-Man
How llong did you wait before you went to look initially? that deer is dead for sure ,but if you went in to fast you may have bumped him a lot farther than he would of went. 4 hrs is a good wait for liver hit, 8 hrs is better for a gutshot... hope you find it!! Hope deer search isn't busy to help you, if so time to start a body search..

BizCT
Dead Deer. You find him yet?
dwallace
Hi guys, Thx for all the tips! I didn't find him. I looked ALL day today up into 6:30 this evening. I must have walked 10 miles. I did circles from last blood and kepted making my circles bigger. I checked all water sources, thickets imaginable. I went easily 3/4 of mile from my last blood with my circles. I have no clue where that buck went. Ghost deer I guess. I did talk to Deer Search this morning and the gentleman for my area stated his dog was only 6 months old and might not be fully trained to track just yet. So I never got any help from the dogs. That would've helped me! I am bummed out big time. I don't go to the woods to just kill a nice deer like that and leave it. I hate that I couldn't find it! I tried my best and it's bugging the crap out of me that I lost that deer. I don't even feel like hunting anymore this year. I can't believe I hit guts. I shot my bow tonight and of course all 3 shots within the super kill on my target. Good luck to all this season. Thx again for all your suggestions! Doewhacker
Man what a bummer. I give you props for giving it your all. That is the worst feeling in the world.
apoallo
it happens to the best of us Dave. try not to beat yourself up over this. The best thing to do In my opinion is get back out there and redeem yourself on another deer. It might not make you feel any better about the lost deer but at least it will take your mind off of it for a bit this way you dont loose out on a good season. It sounds like you did everything you could to find that deer.
