I need someone to explain what the thrill is to "target shooting" by pulling the trigger just as fast as you can. It just sounds like someone throwing away ammo. I just got done listening to this nonsense for about half the time I was out hunting. I'm glad I wasn't hunting anywhere near these guys. I got my usual 4 hours of still hunting in and they were still going at it when I went in the house .... lol.

I'm not sure just what they were shooting, but it sure wasn't rimfire. This was in the middle of some state land, so I hope they weren't messing with centerfire rifles (this area is shotgun only). What ever it was, it sounded like a max capacity of 11 because most of the time it was 11 shots. Maybe like a clip of 10 and one in the chamber?? Is there some kind of pistol with that capacity? Maybe there was some kind of violation going on.

But anyway, my main comment, or question is, am I missing some kind of fun entertainment? What is the fascination with firing as quickly as possible? I don't get it. I generally try to take my time and see how accurate I can be. I know ammo isn't cheap even when you load your own. Seems crazy to just throw it away as fast as you can work your finger. Can anybody explain the thrill of dumping ammo as quick as possible? Just curious.

Maybe they were shooting at zombie's with their AR-15's or AK-47's?

It seems like this type of shooting is the fad these days. One don't buy guns such as these with large capacity magazines to fire one round every 5 minutes. Not knocking anyone here, just trying to explain what might be happening here.

Some guys like to be fast and accurate, or try to be. Ive been known to unload my AR in a rapid manor from time to time. I do have more fun trying to be accurate, but Ill be dipped if it isnt a great tension release to just get out there and blast a piece of paper 30 times in a row at 25 or 30 yards as fast as I can and still keep it on the paper.

Plenty of handguns have a 10+1 capacity, my SA XD40 does.

At over a 1$ per bullet I shoot one at a time. But clipping a few rounds quickly can reduce stress, IMO. The rifle range I go to does not allow rapid fire... Besides taking a few target rounds at base camp, I usually return with all my ammo when hunting. Like you said Doc, it's a shame they did not drive anything towards you...

Wait untile after the dooms day prediction fails, you will probably hear many people shooting the extra ammo they bought...

Sometimes it is fun to shoot really quickly. I was in Montana this past summer on vacation and went to a place to shoot fully auto machine guns. I shot a Kres and my brother shot an m-4. It was a lot of fun, but I went through 50 rounds in about 15 seconds.

Some target shooting at high speed is always fun, 10 targets and knockem down as fast as you can... assuming the gun is already sighted in, good way to learn to aquire targets in your sights, scope quickly.

Oh yeah, but these guys were not aquiring any target at all. They were simply ripping off their shots as quickly as they could pull the trigger. After the first shot, I doubt they had any idea where the next ones were going. I hope they were not applying anything they were learning to actual hunting scenarios .... lol.

The typical non-hunter percieves that as hunting. Target litter is also associated with hunting. We are a minority and we need freinds, not enemies...

No they dont. Thats a completely ridiculous statement. Doc also never said the guys didnt clean up after themselves, so saying they littered is a big assumption, nothing more.

and they are doing this during hunting season?

Yeah, that was another weird thing about it. Climbing all the way up that killer hill just to make a whole bunch of noise during deer season. All I know is that if I had been hunting anywhere near them, I would have been hugging the ground ... lol. Maybe they just got super bored with not seeing any deer and decided to take it out on some trees.

But like I said this isn't really an isolated incident. I've heard it during summer months and during several different bow seasons. On several occasions, there was groups of people that would spread out and walk across the hill blazing away like a bunch of crazy people. Meanwhile, I'm sitting in my blind hoping they don't come down my way. Doesn't exactly make you confident that any deer will hold to any natural patterns, or move in daylight hours .... lol.

Apparently it is becoming a very popular thing to do. And remember this was not a .22. There was some real money being tossed away.

Mr B will occasionally come home from work...and drop a magazine...Whats the harm?...I think stuff like this is just wired into you guys...like driving a car...boat...motor cycle too fast on occasion...letting an engine roar or turning the stereo up so they can hear it 2 towns over...perks of living in the country...one seldom gets turned in for the occasional 1/4 stick... ;)

No, there was no harm that I am aware of. I hope I didn't come across as saying that there was. It's just something that I don't fully understand. Of course as I have often stated, I am a pretty cheap critter, so just blowing off ammo without any specific purpose would just not be in my nature. Just the other day, I was looking up the price of reloading components for my new rifle. I'll guarantee that each one of those bullets will be shot slowly, carefully and with absolute purpose .... lol.

Regarding the "harm" aspect, I am giving the benefit of the doubt that these people were using pistols in this shotgun only hunting area. And I and assuming that they were shooting in a responsible and safe manner. I do think it is an activity that most other hunters in the area might have found to be a bit un-nerving and might have pushed them out of the area.

Here are some examples, there are many more... BTW: if the law deems it "indiscriminate shooting" it may be a violoation in some jurisdictions.

Some examples of what? People breaking the rules? What does that have to do with what is being talked about here? NOTHING!

Bottom line, you werent there, you have no idea what went on, but you are running off at the mouth saying they littered, or were shooting indiscriminately when you have no clue what went down.

Non hunters wont think they are hunters and that is beaver hunting and thats what happens out there? I got news for you, more people think of hunting as that than what it actually is...

And Ive got news for you, probably 90% of my friends, family and coworkers are non hunters. Not one of them thinks in the way that you are describing. The people you seem to be referring to are not non hunters, they are anti hunters, theres a big difference. All of the non hunters I know realize that there are bad apples in every bunch, and those bad apples do stupid, unsafe things, break the rules, etc. They realize that all of us are not bad apples.

Im sorry, but you seem to be the type thats afraid of their own shadow. Just my opinion.
