Optics on turkey guns

I used to run a scope on my shotgun for Turkey hunting but I do a lot of skeet shooting so it became a pain taking it on & off & resighting it in. Now I run HiViz TriViz sights on all my shotguns & Love them. they come with 3 or 4 different height front fiber optic beads so you can adjust the elevation & the back is adjustable for windage now I can leave this on for skeet as long as the target is in the sight it is going down

I use my 870 12 ga for both turkey and deer hunting.  Last year I was using an EoTech 520 holographic sight.  I loved in a the range, impressive accuracy.  It cost me a nice 6 pointer when I forgot to turn it on.  LMAO.  It didn't last long......

I use a holographic sight as well.  I always turn it off and then turn it on when I'm about to shoot.  I love it when it's on but I've also lost of lot of opportunities as well due to not remembering to turn it on.  Not much of an issue when you spot and stalk or spot and wait but when something flies by unexpected or jumps out all of a sudden, you don't have time to turn it on.

this is what's on my 835

only issue is turning it off or on if you're trying to save the battery and don't want it to die on you during a hunt. It's the only con really, otherwise the dot adjusts to the light conditions and gives you several options for cross hairs.

I have heard alot of complaint about the red dots being to dark for early morning shooting.I know the last time I hunted with one(10-12 years ago) thats the reason I switched to a scope, but I was hunting deer and I would assume red dots have changed a ton by now.

Most red dots today has a dial where you can control the intensity of the dot and well as the size and shape of it as well.

Back in 1995 I bought a Simmons Pro Point red dot scope when the technology was new.  Paid $240 for it back then.  I had it on my 30-30 for a number of years then took it off for a scope.  Just for grins and giggles I stuck that thing on my turkey gun to give it a try.  It is awesome.  I will never go back to just a plain barrel bead again.  And yes, as Elmo mentioned, you can adjust the brightness for low light shooting.

Here's a picture of my red dot on my Mossberg 500 taken during this winter at the end of the day as the sun is setting.  As you can see, clearly visible.  (the top right corner is chipped hence the discoloration)

I am referring to low light gathering for early morning shots, not the rightness setting of the dot.I have to replace my scope on my deer rifle first and after that I will be getting a scope for my shotgun.y then I will have narrowed down a choice.

Ill probably pick up a red dot over the summer for my turkey gun....which also happens to be my deer gun lol. Odd as it may sound ive had good luck with the 30$ walmart special red dots. Just my opinion

gotcha. nothing beats a scope for gathering light

How long does the battery generally last on those?

i think it says in the manual. i try to use it sorta like a safety though and only turn it on when i hear them starting to gobble. keep an extra battery in the pack too.

Gottcha. I was given an old Mossberg 500 12 gauge that needs to be completely gone through, so Im going to build it into a turkey gun. Trying to make the optics decision myself.
