Zag
I need to hang a stand one of my hunting spots and someone has a stand right in the hedgerow/property line right near where I want to hang one. I will only use this stand for the first week of Nov and then take it down. What's do you think is an expectable distance between mine and there stand? PREDATE
I'd shy away from getting closer than 250yds, but as long as you can't see each other then anything over 100yds seems reasonable.
grampy
If you had your stand there first, how close would you want someone setting up to you? That should be the answer you're looking for.
growalot
So they chose to sit on the line.. knowing people hunt the adjacent property?...I personally would be wondering which direction they are planning to shoot now not everyone is like that,,he may set up there for the reason of not having ammo flying over the line and for best wind...that said...I would dang well be sitting close enough that even in dim light they could see me...I also would make sure if going in and out before and after light..I'd have a good bright light. You do remember last years posts on "first shots" right? They may actually appreciate you setting up so you don't have ammo flying over their line... 2012_taco
There is more info needed, is this private property? do you both have permission to hunt this property? is there a property line involved? I hunt a piece of private property that i alone have permission to hunt and the neighbor has set up 2 ladder stands literally right on the line (possibly over the line) both facing into my piece. Until now I have not set a stand too close as I don't want to deal with the confrontation, I usually use my climber and set up closer when I know he's not there. But this situation really gets my goat! I've been thinking of getting some more posted signs, walking the lot line, and putting them up closer together. When he shows up to hunt those stands he should get the point. At the same time I don't want to get back to my truck to find 4 flat tires or worse. People can be real jerks..
G-Man
i have hunted 50 yards from another stand.. but make sure the line is the line.. my neighbor was very upset i had a stand in a fence line that he believed was property line.. but the fence is on my property by 2 feet. when i had it resurveyed to show him. if he had put a stand up there he would be on my property... he put a tower 50 yards from it in the field.. i still hunt my stand but his guys dont seem to like that i hunt that close and the tower sits abandoned waste of $1000.00 for him i guess. deer travel the fence and i even offered him to use the stand i have up. he doesnt his loss....

My spot is a small private piece I only bow hunt during my week vacation that's coming up. It borders farm fields (my family has permission to hunt there). His stand is in the hedge row that is the property line, he is set up to shoot the field and my side. His stand was there first. I have a stand set up further back and I have to pass his to get to mine. The reason I asked this question is last yr I was unable to get to my stand for morning hunts due to hearing bucks chasing doe over by my stand. Where he is setup its just before the point id spook deer entering. I will end up probably settin one up about 100yrds away. I guess that called residential hunting. nyantler
Remember that two hunters give off more human scent than one... I personally wouldn't want a stand close to another hunter... for that reason... actually that's one of the reasons I avoid stand hunting usually... it allows me to distance myself from other hunters when I need to... I never have the problem of having my hunt ruined by someone hunting close to me... it would be a shame if you took the week off and spent most of your time figuring a way to get to your stand or not seeing deer because you have too much human scent in the area... also if the wind is in his favor it probably won't be for you... Buckmaster7600
It sounds to me that the neighbor is doing nothing wrong until he shoots on your side. I had a guy hubting my neighbors property that set up a ladder stand on a line tree facing my way and only had shooting on my side. So the day before opening day I hung a stand 10 feet from his facing his stand I was in it taking a nap at 3:30am. Once it got light and he could see me I waved and smiled and he climbed down I sat te rest of the morning and that afternoon his stand was gone. I think he got my point! phade
Have a conversation with the hunter if there's potential for miscommunication. For the people talking about 250 yds...that's 750 ft, which is more than the minimum setback for guns to homes/buildings. When you are in residential or suburban areas...250 yds isn't even possible. Heck some of the properties I have stands on are not that long. As long as the conversation takes place and both parties understand, then there's no issue. SteveB
All bets off on hedge row property lines. Not going to lose one side of ours for hunting because the other property has a stand. Both put them where they want but if within maybe 100yds of each other, 1st in gets the area.
jjb4900
well, if you wanted to hang a stand close to his, won't you be hunting the property line as well? I have no problem hunting property lines as long as you have no intention of shooting a deer that may go die on his....I sit property lines facing away from the other property, I was questioned once about this by the other landowner and simply said "would you rather I sit 100 yards away and shoot towards your property?" keep in mind the way I expected the deer to travel was not in a direction that would take them onto theirs, just thought of safety and where my shot would travel. I would be on the line but I have permission for both side. Lets face it if a nice buck walks on my side of the hedgerow past him, there's a pretty high chance he shoots. If I do see him next week ill have to ask him.
