In the gym 5 or 6 days a week.

2 days I wear a 45 pound vest and do 45 minutes spread out over a stair climber, Jacobs Ladder, rower and treadmill.then I do 10 minutes of hitting tractor tires with a sledge hammer and flipping them.

The other days I do Kettlebells, chin ups, push ups, rope climbs , farmers walk things like that, mix them up .

Oh Sat. Is deadlift day and power cleans.

I don't believe fitness for hunting activities is stressed enough, and especially so when you get up in age. How many times do you hear about a hunter that keeled over in the woods? Had a guy I do some business with go down while Turkey hunting a couple of years ago. My next door neighbor keeled over while riding his AVT, they let themselves go to seed.

Probably the biggest health factor is being overweight, just about every malady known will be affected by being overweight.

Overweight? Many of these health problems will manifest themselves, it is just a matter of time.

To name a few.

High blood pressure

Cardiovascular-heart

Joints-osteoarthritis

Sleep apnea-breathing problems

Diabetes

Asthma

High cholesterol

Stroke

Fatty liver 

Gall bladder disease

Gout

Kidney disease

Mental health

So as far as I am concerned getting one's weight in the right range is the first order of business to get your health on the right track.

Those weight charts that you see published are not far off the mark of what you should be weighing for the most part.

As for exercise it too is important, but I do not think you have to work out like a pro athlete, a modest workout 20 minutes a day will do the trick.

I have always had kind of an aggressively active life. I have always lived at the base of a very steep hill that some would call a mountain, and found that I enjoyed hiking that hill and all over the top of it, in almost all kinds of weather.

However, here I am now at 80, and I find that the old body has some limits. I find myself hunting much closer to home, and a lot of the long-distance scouting has become a thing of the past. There does come a time when things just have to slow down, and in my case that slow-down has begun. I know there are a lot of guys that can keep going to a much older age, and I truly envy those people with those genes, but as Clint Eastwood used to say, "A man's gotta know his limitations".

By the way, this topic was brought to you one of our past members, good ol' growalot. She was a good gal that fed this site a whole lot of interesting topics on a regular basis. She was fun. She knew how to get under some people's skin a bit, but that kept the site lively. I wish she was here now.

I hear you Doc, I am just glad that I can get out in the woods, get around halfway decent and still have some pretty fair days enjoying myself hunting.

I have been working out lifting weights and running all my life. I take supplements. My new thing is Liver detox. Healthy liver gets rid of fat and does not store it on your body. My crutch is beer. I enjoy it too much to give up but I'll be turning 62 in April and its harder and harder to keep it off the stomach. I'm going to have to have a "Jesus come to meeting" about this. Venison is my red meat. Most of the time I eat veggies and just love it. My liver enzymes are moderately high. Doc is not worried but wants me to quit the beer during the week. I think I can do that. As far hunting season just be aware of your limits like Doc said. Ask for help when needed.

For exercise I have an Assault Air bike that gives pretty much a full body workout along with a stepper, both sit in my living room behind my couch in front of the TV. I do 20 minutes on the bike and 15 on the stepper. Going through the routine watching something interesting on TV makes the session go by quick and easy. Also have a couple of Bullworkers that I mess around with sitting here along side my computer. My every day farm chores will round out my daily workout.

As for diet I am these days pretty much a carnivore disciple, I have been around for some time eating different ways. The standard American diet is pure poison and the reason so many people's asses are two axe handles wide and why they are in poor health. The carnivore route has made a believer out of me because it works exactly as advertised.

I won't live forever but as long as I am around I want to be able to physically participate in the activities I love.

That is the reason I do not do much snow tracking these days, I have most times ended up a long way from where I started and it can be a nightmare drag if you catch up and kill one. Too old.:notme:

And then there are those that I see running along the highway or pedaling their ass on the highway on bikes so that they can "live forever". I have to wonder how good it is for your longevity to be sucking in those exhaust fumes of each passing car, truck, or bus deep into your lungs.
