Five Seasons
im no expert but also interesting that they'd be using energy sparing. Have to think they're pretty tired from a long hard winter...

sbuff
We should all go shed hunting then just south of the Desmond hotel on the nys northway. They were both impressive racks.

backyard back 40
Hey there. I've been lurking on the site for a bit and thought I'd get involved. I know this isn't a intro page so I'll get to it. I have been out 10 or so times in my area in Long Island hunting down sheds with no success. Am I correct in assuming this unusually cold weather is a reason bucks might be holding on to there gear longer? growalot
It's been my understanding and experience(here) that buck loose gear faster when under stress....this winter should have been pretty stressful for them in most areas...I do not know about yours If there is a severe winter, the run-down condition of the bucks may move the average date of antler dropping up a few weeks. Stress of any sort will cause the antlers to drop earlier. Conversely, deer living in good conditions may drop antlers later. I knew of a few deer that were kept as pets in a large pen in a city park. They were fed well and had excellent living conditions. The two large bucks in that enclosure routinely kept their antlers until early April. Edited March 25, 2015 by growalot
Dom
The Drunk post was not fair. There are many factors that what he saw was correct/What was seen could be a doe/does fighting also could be that where this was the habitat is very good=antler retention.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Cold harsh weather usually leads to hard times that causes deer to loose the antlers. I would think in area's with high deer and doe population the testosterone in their system might make them keep antlers longer as breeding is extended. When the levels of testosterone go down it causes the antler to fall off. Photo period has a big effect on them but testosterone overrides that it seems. backyard back 40
I was talking to a guy who lives in western Suffolk county ( Long Island) yesterday. He works night and goes home in the wee hours of the morning. When he got home there was a big 6 pointer in the driveway. Full head gear intact. Must be really good eats around there.
