Bear kills deer in a backyard

  1. 1. What would you have done?

    • Let nature take its course
    • Kill the bear
    • Kill both and fire up the grill

I understand your point Growalot and you know what if it was my back yard I might have done the same thing this guy did and scared it away.  The video is short and does not show a kill or blood.  I doubt that deer survived, it probably had something wrong with it that made this bears predatory instinct kick in.

Do males go after people, yes apparently some rare occasions it happens.  So do deer, cows, horses, snakes and sharks, we forget we are in the food chain for some species.  When we attach the human aspect to Mother Nature we say it is cruel.  But that bear felt no pity or remorse just a need for food.

At the very minimum I would have called the DEC to put down the deer.  More than likely I would have dragged what was left of the deer back into the woods for the bear to finish with a new trail cam over it.

Sorrow for the deer, yes.  Would this be a horrible scene to watch, I am sure.  But what a scene of nature.  I would have interfered enough by putting up that fence.  The bear lived here before I did.  If you don't like bears in your back yard killing deer then move because it just happened.  Sarcasm at its best.

Now while deep woods hunting I get to think about those articles, thanks Grow!  LOL Solo camping in bear country, hope those males are full!  Its not the hunting part I worry about its when I am sleeping alone in my sturdy bear proof pop-up tent, arg.  "What was that noise!"

I suppose I keep needing to remind my self my points do not always get through on the first try...I can say with all honesty...the deer being killed had no baring on my thoughts, is what it is...the actions of the bear and the fact some people still think animals are afraid of humans all the time...that the things they read about animal behavior is written in stone is what concerns me. Just like humans animals evolve...they are having more and more contact with humans and attitudes are changing...fears diminishing. They are having more and more non combatant contact with us and we are looking more and more like prey...Think about it, the guys first instinct was to grab a camera...not protect himself just in case.

As far as moving...one needs to think about that statement...because look at where the predators are moving to...Raccoons just a little one( yes predatory in search of easy meals and they do not always back down)...numbers back in 2011 had them at 40 per kilometer in the woods and 69 per Kilometer in the cities....the number of studies on city dwelling yotes speaks for it's self. NYS bear hunting areas changed because of the number of bears migrating toward the cities...Rochester,Buffalo ,Syracuse. Had it not been for the human encounters that were happening, those hunting areas would no have changed..The DEC told us at a bear meeting "DO NOT FEED, we no longer relocate nuisance bear. We put them down and you will be investigated and charged for causing nuisance bears.

My sister works at MOOG in Elma where they recently had two bears spotted on their hiking trails.

It was such an event that it makes the local news here when bear are spotted where we're not accustomed to seeing them regularly.

From what she told me, her headquarters called the DEC but they wouldn't respond to the call due to how common bear sighting have become around here lately.

Apparently they (her company) shut down the trails to employees for a while until the dust settles.

I'm sure with a taste of human blood that any animal can become a "man killer", but I don't think we should label them all as that based on a few isolated instances where there may be something else contributing to this behavior. JMO..., BUT I DO UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM.

whoa! I have heard plenty of bleating, etc. from dying deer, but that is gut wrenching...I probably would make the same noise if I was being chomped on.

I think I would shoot the deer first, and see if the bear runs off....then call the DEC, report it. If the bear comes back then I would shoot it. I am a firm believer In critters being critters, but I would be very concerned for the bear coming back to feed. I am guessing the deer was already injured for the bear to be able to capture it.

Is it just me or does the deer look bigger than the bear? Looks like a small bear and he must have found her hurt or been real lucky.

As to what to do, if not residential shoot the deer and let the bear eat it. I would want to end the deer's suffering. But as others have said just mother nature at work. I aspire to be a lot cleaner killer.

I would have left the bear to his business.. yet would have notified authorities at least to let them know of the incident as it was happening... I would want something done about a hungry bear being that close to my home and family. I'm sure that is an incident that the local law enforcement or EnCon Dept would like to know about... and I would press them to do something for the protection of the neighborhood. In the woods I would just let nature take its course... unless it was hunting season... in which case, I would be eating venison and bear meat afterwards of course! :)

Would have called authorities, given them 10 minutes to respond, then I would have killed the bear. If a bear will track deer into your backyard without fear, the next time could be far worse. A bear that size could bust your door open easily, whether you are home or not. Also, seeing it took that deer in your yard, it will remember that area as a food source. Sorry, but the safety of my family and pets out weighs nature.
