Wow, I never would've thought that. Are they more sensitive to lead than other animals? Or will anything get sick from a piece that size?

Eagles are much more affected by lead than ravens. Eating the same food, an eagle will have much higher blood lead levels. It has something to do with how they metabolize it.

Someone sent me this link to a video of a young, wild golden eagle trying to prey on a chamois. I have to wonder if the bird survived long term. Take a close look at what happens to it.

That is amazing, that bird was defiantly beat up. Is that something that the eagle would normally do to a healthy goat or do you think it was weak?

I don't think it was weak. I think it was dumb. The videographer claims he videoed a wild bird but there is something in there about edited. I mention this because I can accurately age the bird in the opening shot. I cannot accurately age the bird hanging onto the chamois.

 

The opening bird is not more than a year old. The bird that attacked the chamois is a young bird. It might be the same bird, if not, it is not more than 2 years old.

 

I think it was a young bird that made a big mistake. Golden eagles kill ungulates rarely. They do so by knocking them off cliffs. They also grab their backs - like this bird did - and hang on until the deer, or whatever, drops of exhaustion.

No dumb questions. Crows and ravens are closely related but quite different. By weight, ravens are 3X as heavy as a crow. Ravens and red-tailed hawks average the same size. Crows are more versatile in the eating habits. Ravens are carcass specialists in winter.

I actually found this while I was searching for information about the film being made (a work of fiction) about a boy and a golden eagle. I strongly suspect that the opening shot of the incoming eagle was a totally different shot; this is behavior I would expect an eagle coming to the glove to do (a young bird begging), with the camera being set up near the bird's handler so that the eagle appears to come right at the viewers. I think this was just added to the beginning of a real hunting video for drama. I agree that young raptors are often prone to dumb hunting mistakes. It's partially what makes the mortality rate in first year bird so high.

Sometimes, when the trapper is trapping eagles. It can be boring. It can be thrilling. I was there for one capture and one miss. Maybe tomorrow, depending on how today goes.

I have noticed a lot more Bald Eagles lately. Had a pair hanging around my house for a few years, but we had some jackass shoot one last year at the state park. Have not seen the other one since. Saw one yesterday driving home from work sitting in a tree along the road.

So, do you have a healthy pack of yotes or do I see some coywolfs !?!! I've seen big yotes but every single one of them looks huge. Comparing to the carcass.... Am I alone ?
