Picked up Haleys new turkey gun

Stopped in to Gander on Friday and bought Haley her new turkey gun. Its a Mossberg 500 20ga with the adjustable stock, fiber optic sights and ported barrel. Basically the model they used to call the Turkey Thug. I had to order it, so it should be in any day now. They said 3-5 days. I couldnt find a decent price locally for the sight I am going to get her for it, so Ill order that online. She will be all set for this weekend though. I picked up some Remington #5 turkey loads and HeviShot Triple Beard to see how each of them pattern. We will get that done Friday after work so shes ready to go Saturday morning.

I also scouted the flock that we will be after both mornings this weekend. They are hanging out right where I figured they would be. Saw them there first thing in the morning, then stopped to check at various times, and they stayed basically in the same field/woods area from daylight till noon. Two of the toms have very long beards, its tough for me to judge from a distance, but they didnt look too far off of the ground. The third was noticeably shorter, but still very nice. There were a couple of jakes off to the side, a little ways from the toms and hens. Looks like we should have darn near perfect weather Saturday and Sunday, so with any luck, she will have a chance to knock down a tom.

My son is down in Hilton Head and then to Florida on Spring break so he will miss youth season. We are pretty poor trukey hunters though so maybe we will get out in May and get lucky. I am going out on the mountain bike here in a bit to scout some state land fields before dark just to see whats about.

That is a nice looking gun. I picked up the boy the Mossburg combo last year.

Thanks. Are you taking a kid out this weekend?

not yet - trying to set something up but they're all older now or busy with other things.  the branch is doing the youth turkey hunt as usual.  it'll be a last minute request i get, if anything.  daughter is not quite 3 so i've got a long wait there.  i don't post deer but i'll post a flop if i do take a kid out.

Looks like a nice new gun. Collapsible stocks for youths are a great idea but I can't understand why mossberg puts pistol grips on a gun with a reciever mounted safety, I have huge hands and have to take my hand completely off there grip. It has to be especially hard to reach with little hands.

That's a great gun. Let me know how you/her like the pistol grip. I could never get used to those or the thumbhole stocks.

By the way, check your order status. I bought 2 boxes of hevi-13 to pickup in store that had to be ordered and never got the email they arrived. So they've been sitting there a week unbeknownst to me.

Will do, I liked my 870 that had the sure fire stock on it. The main reason I picked this one up for her was the adjustability. Wont have to cut a stock down and then replace it later on. I am calling Gander today to see if its in yet. I still need to order the scope for it, but I need to make sure its drilled and tapped first. If not, she can use the open sights for now and Ill mount a scope on it later.

I haven't seen a single bird there this year, numbers seem down from last year. Maybe they just aren't showing off yet.

Damn, that stinks. There are alot of birds around my area this year, I dont think Ive ever seen as many. Getting permission to hunt them is another story. I need to go over to one of the neighbors this weekend and see if I can get access to the toms I hear gobbling out back every morning. Apparently my girlfriends ex-husband pissed off all but one of the neighbors. Hopefully that doesnt reflect on me.

should be. My 835 was. I think almost all the modern synthetics are now. You'll still probably need a weaver mount though.

that's a bummer man, my place is loaded for the first time in years. The DEC is predicting a good year as well after a few good springs and mild winter. It's all about habitat with turkeys and they've finally let a few fields grow up. Probably why I see more fox now too lol.

That's why I try to have many places to Turkey hunt, if they aren't in one area they might be in the next.
