Pistol Recertification Site

Recommended Posts

Has any one tried to use the online Safe Act recertification site with any luck?  I have tried & I get almost to the end & the dam page expires! Then I try again & the same thing happens, what's up with that?   I have also tried to print the form & that has not worked.   Also has any one let them that they are recertifying under protest of the NY Safe Act?

Major frustration from recertification site.

First attempt: page expired before completion

Second: after complete listing all my handguns it wouldn’t save

Third: saved and then was “pending” for four months before “accepted” . Unable to print the confirmation however.

Very typical New York State.

So I haven't done mine so I went to the site.....

Entered data for 3 handguns, started at 5:13 and was done in 10 minutes by the clock and printed a receipt.

One suggestion is they have a "save for later" feature; may want to do that and then re enter the system to continue, that should give a fresh clock to start with for the next entry period.

I'll say I'm glad its not for rifles or I'd be there for a spell.

I would not recertify on the internet.  Who knows who is spying on all that personal information with your address and list of handguns?

I'm not sure it really matters whether the recertification is done on-line. The entire database is essentially available on-line for anyone who knows how to access it. Just sayin'.

Here is another stupid thing they do.  They send out a letter telling you to recertify,  Why don't they just send out the 1 page form, let us fill it out & send it back?   I also saw that the county clerks want to meet with the governor before the January 31 dead line because they have no idea what or how to keep track of the recertification info.

Have you shared that information with the NYS Police IT people to better protect this sensitive information?

I'm not a hacker, and I would have no knowledge at all of how to access that information. A close friend of mine is a retired NYSP Captain who mentioned the vulnerability to me while we were discussing the SAFE act when it was passed. Their  IT system is so broad that security in the gun registration part was not generally a top priority. I hope it's seriously on their radar after nearly five years, though, considering the information they're collecting. I'm making no accusations here, just relaying information.

That said, it probably wouldn't be a good idea try to re-certify on a Wi-Fi connection at the local coffee shop either.
