Hunter007
Have this box of 25 year old Winchester super x slugs That lost and just happened to have found recently in back of closet but it looks like part of the space material between the slug and powder is gone deteriorated but I'm not sure look like there is gap in there that was not there when they where new but I'm not sure . Rattler
Dump them. Had a friend with a Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge fire an old Rottweil slug in the gun. Pressure must have been way up, because the bolt set back so far, we needed to hammer it to get it open. Then we saw it had been pushed back so far it needed to be filed down around the bolt handle to make it work. Figuring the headspace was now too much, the bolt was replaced with a new one. If it had been a pump action or a semi, I think the gun would have been far worse off. I wouldn't shoot them if I were you.
Buckmaster7600
Probably but not worth the few dollars you’d save.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

airedale
There is nothing abnormal pictured with that slug, the old translucent plastic hulls allowed one to see the way Brenneke designed their slugs with the wad and pedestal screwed into the slug bottom and stays with the slug in flight. The gap you see is the is the pedestal area which cushions the slug a bit to prevent deformation and was supposed to give some stabilization in flight, something like a badminton shuttlecock. The shelf life of ammo depends on the care that was taken during storage, cool and dry is the way to go. Stored properly it will work fine and be accurate even decades old. Old paper shot shells would swell and weaken with age and I would not fire them in any of my guns. Al
Hunter007
Here is the back of the box with what supposed to be in the slug . Looks like some of the spacer material is deteriorated away . Or they draw the diagram wrong .
airedale
The slug you are holding in your hand is a Brenneke, the box you are picturing is for Winchester Foster slugs. Looks like someone put Brennekes in a Winchester box. Al

Daveboone
They should be fine. Modern ammo components are stable as a rock...exception if there was any chance of them being stored damp. I would only err on the side of setting them aside for practice/ range rounds.
Hunter007
Ok could only find one good picture on the internet of these things and I dont see no gap like what I see in the ones I have
airedale
Ammo is constantly being upgraded and improved, wads are a component that has seen many design changes through the years, all you are seeing pictured is a newer wad that is currently being used, the old Brennekes used a pedestal type wad. Pygmy
When Airedale and I started hunting, the only slugs available were Foster stlye and Brennekes... Many old timers referred to Brennekes as " Them GERMAN slugs"....Hehehe....
airedale
There are several slugs available to hand loaders using a variation of the Brenneke screw attached wads, as you can see they all have their own idea on what is the best design. I like and use 410 Brennekes in my Savage model 24 over and under 22 LR/ 410 Al Edited November 26, 2018 by airedale

My dad used to tell me about pumpkin balls that would sometimes roll out the end of the barrel. paper hulls would swell and have to look for the straightest stick you could find to push out the empty
