I've used them for years,Will bring in buck and doe of all ages. Best if you get them from at least 2 miles from where you hunt. You can look as them as a deers calling card any deer in the area will come in downwind from them and try to find/see the new guy/gal! I've learned one thing not to put them out before legal shooting light as i've had deer come very quickly and i cant see to shoot! Seem to last 2-4 days as when exposed to warm air they start to rot.. i've removed them from road kill as well never even gave it a thought if it was illegal...i try to use them fresh, the seem to lose some potency when frozen and thawed....dont forget to swap them with sucessful hunters from other areas!!

As far as it being illegal not really sure but thw law

requires that you possess a carcus tag for a deer

hit by a car.As for using a tarsal gland yes have

done that and had mixed results.I can tell you that

one season I used a tarsal gland from a buck that

I processed for another hunter and it was amazing

to see how other bucks reacted the gland I used came

from a big mature buck. Most the bucks I saw were actually

intimidated by it.

I have a younger brother who is a cop,He said he was not sure if it was legal or not.He would not have a problem if he saw someone taking the glands. He has given deer to people who stop and ask all the time.He said he would just ask the person not to cut it up on the side of the road, might make somepeople up set.

I got a reply back from Lt Stoner today. Here it is.....

"Hello John, by law the owner of the vehicle that hit the deer is entitled to the carcass. If they do want the deer it would be unlawful to take the tarsal gland without their permission. If the owner of the vehicle that his the deer does not want the carcass it would not be illegal for you to take just the tarsal glands. Lt. Tom Stoner"

That is great news. Thanks for checking. I have been using tarsals for many years and have killed some nice bucks over them. But what I was worried about was the doe's saliva... Find a road-killed doe during the rut and swab out her mouth with cotton balls. Zip-tie them to the overhanging branch over a scrape. I can't believe how it brings in bucks!

That would be a lot easier! B) But I think the salivary glands in the deer are located around the mouth and not just in the tongue and they are the ones that carry the chemical messages at the licking branch...or overhanging branch over the scrape. Also, once it started to rot...sounds kind of nasty and I doubt effective.

  • 4 weeks later...

just the rear leg glands inside the knee joint(the ones they pee on) ...dont leave them out take them out with you..and refigerate over night you'll only get 3-4 days before they start to rot.. i use one and freeze the other so when the 1st is spoiled i thaw out the new one.
