danboy
Just a reminder to report your kill. Reason being a friend of mine was stopped by DEC while fishing and he asked to see License and in conversation asked if he got a deer this last season his reply was yes. So he gives his license to him and all his tags are attached . DEC goes to his car and comes back with a ticket for 250.00 for not reporting this kill ,because his deer tag was missing. and he bragged about his deer. LOL Edited November 5, 2011 by danboy
shooter
Good glad he got busted to many people I know do not reprt there deer. Lots of peolpe think just putting a tag on the carcass is all thats needed and dont bother calling it in or going online. There should be more inforcement towards this issue in my opinion
fasteddie
Heck , they give us 7 days time to report the kill and it can be done by phone or on line .

growalot
done .....both kills reported with in the first 3hours after kill...the last report the recording told me how many tags I had outstanding and repeated back to me the number of tag I was using for verification...that was something new this year...and different from doe report I did the second Saturday... I don't know about any one else but tag is filled out in field and never attached until actually hung in tree....that way I know it's not getting lost
WNYBuckHunter
Glad to hear they are starting to tighten things down. Its a bummer for your friend, but he probably wont forget again. I dont put the tag on the animal till its in the truck or at my house if Im hunting here. You dont have to tag it in the field, just fill the tag out and have it with you. orion
Since we are on the topic of filling out tags, does anybody know what pen works best? I have a horrible time writing on those tags.

fasteddie
I mean i hate to be the one to burst the bubble but i dont think i have seen a deer on this website with a tag in its ear or antler..IDK I fill out the tag , put it in my pocket and when ready to load the deer cut a slit in its ear and fasten the tag with a small ty-wrap . I then tuck the tag in the ear so it doesn't flap in the breeze when driving home . It would be a rarity to see a tag in pics of folks with a deer kill . Dave
I am glad we are talking about filling out tags this one always confused me and it doesn't take much. When you get your hunting tags which tag must be signed immediately?
WNYBuckHunter
You just sign the back of the license portion. Dont do anything with the actual tags until you kill the deer.
SteveNY
I am glad we are talking about filling out tags this one always confused me and it doesn't take much. When you get your hunting tags which tag must be signed immediately? You must sign the back of the license, its the one that says "License" on it.Carcass tags have little pictures of the animals you're supposed to put them on. They must be filled out immediately after the animal is recovered, be sure to mark or cut out the month and day of kill on the bag of the tag. Tags must be attached when the animal is at camp or in a vehicle to transport it.
Dave
You just sign the back of the license portion. Dont do anything with the actual tags until you kill the deer. Just the portion that has the back tag number, is that right? I am looking at the back tag and it has two pieces to it do I sign both half's. I would only fill out the tags that I filled in the past and never signed anything else. So If I didn't get a deer I never signed anything. I am sure I was in violation for not signing my license. WNYBuckHunter
Steve beat me to it. Yep, the one that says License. Dont need to sign the back tag. No problem Dave.
Jennifer
I fill out the tag , put it in my pocket and when ready to load the deer cut a slit in its ear and fasten the tag with a small ty-wrap . I then tuck the tag in the ear so it doesn't flap in the breeze when driving home . It would be a rarity to see a tag in pics of folks with a deer kill . That's what we do, too. I always carry some small zip-ties in my pocket and we zip-tie the tag to the ear, then 'fold' the ear shut and zip tie it that way so that it can't come flying out somehow on the way home. StripedBuck
Thanks for the tip on the zip tie through the ear. I guess any good waterproof pen will do as far as filling out the tag in field.
Karpteach
You need to report the kill even after you got to a check in station.
