Five Seasons
the 2.5 vs 3.5 has always been the hardest for me. It's not always simple but a yearling can be generally easy and the >4.5 is generally pretty clear too. I may be odd here but sometimes it's the big breeder doe I wonder the most about or even a 1.5 vs 2.5 year old doe where the weight difference might only be 15-20 pounds.

BizCT
Whats on the farm and do u think population is to high for whats there? I’m about a mile away. It’s a farm for people to buy stuff and hike. Not sure the deer I hunt ever even go there. I’ve run cams in 3N for 10+ years and never got a pic of a 10pt. My dad and I have never seen a 10pt in 3N (30 years). But in 3S Last year I had two 10’s on cam and one this year. None of three are P&Y, but definitely mature and cool to see.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

G-Man
I always try and say if it were he it would be as there are many factors in aging deer, imo having pics of previous years is about the only way to really know an age without cementum anaylisis
BizCT
Just got the results back on my 6pt. He came back aged at 3.5. Guess the NY DEC biologists at the butcher were right. We thought 2.5 for sure. Goes to show you that you Just never know. Clearly a weak racked 3.5 even for our area and not an average 2.5. Next up is @Chef when he gets the results of his half rack buckSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

BizCT
This thread is amazing, just proves that I can not judge age by antlers or body size anymore..lolBody size helps for sure at least to some extent. The trail cam pictures are very noticeable between 1.5 and 2.5 for example. And really old deer just look “different” lots of times Here’s 3 different ages in same spot, same year. Of course i could be wrong but I feel confident they aren’t the same.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Paula
Why is the age important?
wolc123
10 minutes ago, Paula said: Why is the age important? It is all about the meat for me. If I can’t get them at 1/2 year, when the meat is of the highest quality, then I would prefer a 3.5 year old when meat is usually at the highest quantity, in a free-range deer. After that, both quantity and quality drop off. There is no appreciable difference in quality (taste) between 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 year old deer. I think lots of folks like to target older deer, because they are more of a challenge. Edited December 10, 2021 by wolc123

Lawdwaz
1 hour ago, Paula said: Why is the age important? To me it's interesting. I found this in a quick search from the DEC: "62.6 percent --- portion of the adult buck harvest that was 2.5 years or older, the greatest in New York history and up from 40 percent a decade ago, and 30 percent in the 1990s." So I'd guess by year "age", that the 1.5 YO buck is the majority of what is killed here. As the deer get older, the 2.5 is the next age class to be killed and so on. It stands to reason that the 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 etc are more scarce as the get older. When you kill a bigger bodied and possibly bigger racked buck, it's just neat to see approx. how old he is.

It's really tough beyond 2.5/3.5 unless you have a unique rack that allows you track the buck year after year
