Do deer go completely nocturnal during late season?

They are trophy hunters and that’s what they do.   I am thankful that God made me a meat hunter and I can’t think of any state that treats my kind better than NY.
My advice to the complainers would be : pack your bags and move, if you don’t love it leave it.

If you can’t think of any states that provide more opportunity then New York you probably haven’t been to many too hunt. Which seems pretty obvious considering your lack of scope and your broad incorrect generalizations as why others hunt.
As for complaining as you call it, your lack of understanding shows there as well. There are many of us that Genuinely care about our deer hunting and the health of the population and we wish to see it improve to provide more opportunities to all of us. Quite frankly many changes that been slowly taking place stems from people with like minds working towards making change.

Here’s hopin!! Like I said in my inaugural post starting this thread , diversity of opinion abounds and is evident. Some of you guys say that they do go nocturnal , or at least more nocturnal , and don’t need to move around or eat when they’re stressed ; others , in contrast say they still move during the day some and still get up to feed , even while feeling heavily pressured from hunting . I think it’s probably kind of both!! Deer probably hunker down in areas they feel safe more after the the first few days of rifle and go primarily nocturnal and feed much less during the day , saving most of their excursions for after nightfall . However , I’m sure they still will get up and move around a little bit , relive themselves , stretch and eat , but all within or nearby their sanctuary areas - the Kay is to find these areas !! Where are they !!!  Lol

I am loving the changes they made this year and have been able to capitalize on three of them: 1) early antlerless season 2) early ML antlerless reopened in Adirondacks 3) extra half hour before and after     Daylight.  
 

So, I wish to offer you a sincere “thank you” if your complaints helped contribute to those positive changes which have contributed greatly towards my own sending of 3 deer to Heaven so far this year.  Hopefully, I will get to send at least one more there during the upcoming Holiday ML season.

Another big Thankyou to my friends with the Northern Erie Snowseekers for doing what they have to make sure that special season takes place.

May you all have the merriest of Christmasses , and thanks so much for your contributions to those three early gifts which the Good Lord had already blessed our family with.

And yes our regular season is way too long considering the hunter densities typical in New York State.

How long of a gun season would be acceptable to a lot of people??  My brother in law works for a company that automatically grants you 4 weeks vacation when you walk in the door. But everyone is taking their vacation the last 2 weeks of July and the first 2 weeks of August. No exceptions. And he works 6 days a week most weeks. Not everyone had the ability to burn days or gets weekends off

I've been hunting since the late 70's, which is before some of you "experts" were even born, and all I can say is that in general hunting has gotten nothing but BETTER in NYS.  Yeah sure, nothing is perfect in life.   Private land is harder to find and it comes at cost and that cost is getting higher all the time, but that sure as hell is not the fault of the DEC.  Most hunters who stick it out will get a deer.  That wasn't always the case 30, 40 or more years ago, so I won't be buying into some of the sob stories here of how hunting is so poor in NYS.  I've never seen it written anywhere (in any states regulation book) that every hunter should be guaranteed a shot at a trophy deer or any deer for that matter.  It sure looks like some of you younger hunters think that there should be guarantees by proposing these various regulation changes that you think will make it easier for you.

Also, if some of you youngsters think there is too much pressure put on deer by the hoards of (gun) hunters out there today, you'd absolutely flip out if you were brought back in time to see the amount of hunters out there 30, 40 plus years ago.  The number of hunters today are a drop in the bucket to how it used to be.  You guys have way more elbow room than the past generations so please stop complaining.

I have no doubt that is true; backj then, you probably could see a hunter or 2 every square mile of public land evrywhere in the state opening weekend.

Or the days of having two people for one permit.  Who remembers those days. I was just talking with my cousin last night about we used to drive down the road at camp and you could look up the hill as you drove and all you saw were guys in orange. 20 + cars parked on top of the hill. That is not the case anymore.  Hasn’t been like that down at camp in over 15 years

There’s a lot of truth in Steve’s post . The overall age structure has improved,and  the hunting pressure is maybe 1/10 of what it used to be where I hunt . Which is both good and bad .

There used to be pick up trucks of 8 plus hunters everywhere going from spot to spot , go to lunch come back and find that 15 guys pushed your spot . You’d be in a stand and here comes another group through . It kept the deer moving all day, but you’d better be able to hit them on a run .

Going back in time a bit more ,and we needed three hunters to apply for one doe tag aka party permits .

As a kid running around in the woods, it was rare to see a deer , today they’re all over my town , to the point there’s a town hunt to cut down on the numbers , just like in the next town over as well .

The state land South of me where Doc lives , you’d have two per acre lol. The road was lined with trucks and campers . My friend bought 60 acres next to,it , first  opening day he tossed off 17 guys . Those are just the ones he caught .

Oh yeah, opening morning sounded like a war zone back then.  At the end of opening day the highway (390 or maybe 15 back then?) was stuffed with deer hunters in trucks driving home to Rochester.

Hopefully, but I am not optimistic that hunters are going to take the time not kill shed bucks during the new additional unnecessary MZ holiday season.
My guess is plenty are going to get killed at last light when the biggest bodied deer are picked out of a groups feeding in open areas.
